A shackled Earth, ruled by an unstoppable tyrant
An exiled son, and a one-way trip across the galaxy
A perfect world, their last hope for survival

Vice Admiral Isaac Gallant is the heir apparent to the First Admiral, the dictator of the Confederacy of Humanity. Unwilling to let his mother's tyranny stand, he joins the rebellion and leads his ships into war against the might of his own nation.

Betrayal and failure, however, see Isaac Gallant and his allies captured. Rather than execute her only son, the First Admiral instead decides to exile them, flinging four million dissidents and rebels through a one-shot wormhole to the other end of the galaxy.

There, Isaac finds himself forced to keep order and peace as they seek out a new home without becoming the very dictator he fought against and when that new home turns out to be too perfect to be true, he and his fellow exiles must decide how hard they are prepared to fight for paradise...against the very people who built it.

Starred Review of Exile by PUBLISHERS WEEKLY:

"A failed rebellion against a tyrannical space confederacy is exiled to a remote corner of the galaxy in this political space drama, the first full novel in Stewart’s Exile series (after the novella Ashen Stars). In the colonized cosmos of 2386, Isaac Gallant, the son of the dictatorial president of the interstellar Confederacy, is a high-ranking officer in the Confederacy fleet. He’s also secretly part of a rebellion against the Confederacy. Alongside rebellion leader Amelie Lestroud, a former movie star, Isaac helps to colonize a verdant planet... THIS FAST-PACED STARFARING ADVENTURE SUCCEEDS with a thrilling mix of space battles and tender emotions."

EXILE examines a [Star Wars-like] universe in which the rebellion fails before it gets started and the large body of rebels are exiled to a distant part of the universe to create their own civilization--or to die if they fail. A detailed and very intelligent exploration of the realities of society at a macro level.

Exile is the first book in a new series by Glynn Stewart and a welcome addition to his lineup. I will tell you upfront that before you read Exile, you should take the time to read Stewart's Ashen Stars, a novella and prequel to this novel. It provides background information that will make reading Exile a more immediately engaging experience and answers the question of why the book's protagonist takes the actions that he does.

Exile tells the story of Vice Admiral Isaac Gallant, only child and heir to the dictator of the Confederacy of Humanity: First Admiral Adrienne Gallant. A man of honor, Isaac Gallant lived with the knowledge that his mother killed his father when they ended up on opposite sides of the rebellion that she led. In events covered in the novella Ashen Stars, Gallant (a very appropriate name for our hero) discovers that his mother has succumbed to the temptations of absolute power and is as corrupt as the officials that she originally overthrew. Exile begins with an attempted rebellion led by Archangel and Bombardier. Gallant is Bombardier and Archangel is an unlikely revolutionary: Amelie Lestroud, an interplanetary superstar known for staring in action movies. The attempted revolution, however, is just the jumping off point for the story. The rebellion fails, spectacularly, in the first chapters of the book and our protagonists are arrested. Unable to stomach killing her only child, and hedging her bets for the survival of humanity, the First Admiral orders all the rebels, political prisoners, and anyone with a history of speaking out against the government to be rounded up and exiled. They are loaded into spaceships that make up a fully equipped expeditionary and settlement group and shipped through a wormhole that can only be opened one more time before it is closed for two hundred years. At the other end of the wormhole is a planet suitable for colonization - and this is where the novel takes off. Exile is the story of this group of people as they settle on their new home and try to build a government and society better than the one they left behind. Along the way they encounter formidable beings, engage in epic space battles, and their resolve and honor are tested. Exile does not leave readers hanging, but does position our heroes for the next chapter in their adventure - and I, for one, can't wait.

This book has all the things that I most enjoy in a Glynn Stewart novel: action, space battles, and heroes that strive to live up to the very best of humanity. Honor is real in the Stewart universe and his protagonists are willing to pay the price for it. I will say that there are a couple of rather abrupt transitions in the book. The rebellion is over in the blink of an eye. This is why I think it is so important that readers take the time to read Ashen Stars first. The transition from the space battle at the end of the book to events that take place after they return home was also a little abrupt and I had to go back and reread that section to make sure that I hadn't inadvertently missed something. Having said that, don't let these things scare you off. Exile is the perfect read for someone looking for action, adventure, epic space battles, and the very best in humanity.

For the sake of transparency, I should tell you that I received an advanced reader's copy of this book in exchange for an honest review; however, I also liked this book so much that I bought a copy and also bought the audiobook. This is my way of making sure that Glynn Stewart keeps telling these stories that I so enjoy reading. So, do yourself a favor if you are looking for an action-filled book that will remind you about the best in humanity, and buy a copy of Exile now. Then, enjoy!

Like the Duchess of Terra series this is straight ahead Space Opera/MilSF without a Magic Angle.

Of course it assumes FTL transport. And it demonstrates how good intentions can be warped by Institutional structures.
Consider where Syria's latest leader started from and where he has ended up.

This novel started off with a bang, then seemed to trail off, slowly building up to a tremendous reveal partway through, and then kept me on the edge of my chair afterwards. It was a really good book, that could very easily start an incredibly good series, depending on where the author wants to go with it. There are a million and one places I can think of the next book starting (if there is one, he left his options open). The story was fantastic, the characterizations were all very good, the dialogue was a bit predictable at times, but never got in the way of the book, and the worldbuilding was only okay before it was all ripped away in the first couple of chapters, and the worldbuilding introduced later has not had much revealed yet, but has enormous potential.

Not quite enough space battle in my opinion. A lot of planet based SciFi. With the exception of the final space battle. And then there is the predictable, but gratifying final scene.

A new space opera from Glynn Stewart that will, hopefully, develop into a new series. The story of what might happen to those who rebel against - or are just a pain in the rear to - a brutal dictator: exile to the other side of the known galaxy with no way to return. Lots can happen during a prolonged trip into the unknown when all the troublemakers, criminals and “traitors” are cooped up together on a handful of ships. When they arrive and find the “perfect” planet, how many of the exiles pull together to help form the new colony and how many are out for themselves? And what happens when they discover they are not alone?

Very enjoyable read as always from Glynn Stewart. Nicely paced story with good character development and more than enough twists and subplots to keep the story very engaging. The story wraps up nicely - no cliff hangers or dangling plot lines, but enough is disclosed, that I could easily see this story developing into a new series. I certainly hope so.

Once again, Glynn Stewart has written a phenomenal book full of space adventures and morality questions. This particular book focuses less on actual battles (although there are some!) and more on some of the other challenges faced when attempting to build a functional society in an unfamiliar place, and I loved seeing the genuine care that Glynn and his characters poured into each challenge as they presented themselves.

I can see why he lists this series among his favorites, and I can't wait to read more of it.

"Exile" by Glynn Stewart is an enthralling sci-fi masterpiece that effortlessly weaves together elements of space opera and political intrigue. Stewart's storytelling prowess is on full display as he crafts a vivid universe filled with complex characters and intricate plotlines. The protagonist, Captain Eric Weston, is a compelling figure whose journey from exile to a reluctant hero is both heart-wrenching and inspiring. The author's attention to detail and world-building is impeccable, immersing readers in a richly imagined galaxy where alliances are fragile, and danger lurks at every turn.

One of the strengths of "Exile" lies in Stewart's ability to balance high-stakes action with moments of introspection and camaraderie among the diverse cast of characters. The pacing is relentless, keeping readers on the edge of their seats as the narrative unfolds with unexpected twists and turns. The space battles are described with cinematic precision, making them pulse-pounding and visually striking. Stewart's writing is accessible yet sophisticated, making this novel a must-read for both seasoned sci-fi enthusiasts and newcomers to the genre.

In conclusion, "Exile" is a tour de force in science fiction literature that seamlessly combines gripping storytelling, complex characters, and a meticulously crafted universe. Glynn Stewart has delivered a standout addition to the genre, and I eagerly anticipate future releases in this captivating series. Highly recommended for anyone seeking a thrilling journey through the cosmos with a cast of unforgettable characters.
