- Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2024This short keeps you involved right up to the end. The mind is a strange place to be lost in where a dream is reality and reality is a dream.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2024From the title I thought this book was going to be full of action and ghosts but sadly it wasn't . nothing actually happens till chapter 20 so if you are like me and like books that start off with action this book isn't for you. I also thought the author had used a few words that didn't make sense to me as an American , so I found myself rereading passages confused .
- Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2024It was strange that he was part of it but it fit right into the narrative. Well written but the ending was not to my liking.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2023Jay Darkmoore is an amazing author who I discovered on TikTok! I thoroughly enjoyed his book, “The Night Shift” because he develops his characters so well that you feel that you know them and genuinely care for them. Then he throws the characters into the ghost story and you are hanging onto their coattails as they survive at all costs. I am excited to discover this writer and look forward to reading more of his work. He’s a great guy and personable on TikTok.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 8, 2024good read with a twist
- Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2024… the story desperately needs an editor. However, I applaud the author for his imagination. This is worthy of a Hollywood treatment.
Tom takes a night security position at a warehouse, little knowing the place is worse than haunted. And you will never see the twist at the end.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2023I had fun reading this book. Instead of ghost haunting an old house, scaring mom, dad and the kids to death, I got to read a story about pure evil doing what it does best - - - trying to manipulate the living. I am going to check out other books by the author. Thank you, Jay Darkmoore.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2023It's hard to know what to expect with short horror novellas, but this one does a great job of telling a full story with an excellent creep factor.
The author takes his time to set up the scene, and allows us to get to know our main character and his motivations in a way that feels natural.
Tom has taken an overnight job at a warehouse in a desperate attempt to bring in extra income to take care of his ailing wife. Before he begins his first shift he is warned repeatedly by his new boss of strange happenings in the dead of night, and the mysterious (gruesome) fates of his many predecessors.
What follows is a tense buildup of isolation, paranoia, psychological torment, and demons that may or may not exist solely within the mind.
This book kept me engaged from beginning to end, and I couldn't help but compare it to the 2014 horror movie "Last Shift." If you liked that movie, you'll enjoy this book! I know I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrifying but beautiful!
Do not read this before bed! It's the stuff of nightmares! The twists and turns never stop and the tension is phenomenal. The beauty of the love Tom has for his wife is such a stark contrast to the twisted events around him. Absolutely amazing! Loved it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Recommend this lil gem
A nice lil spooky kick a** read, Darkmoore is a good storyteller; The Night Shift was enjoyable to read with great character building and the ending left me wanting more. Great book for those starting this genre.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great ghost story!
Well, this was mental! (In a good way😂)
I'm a big thriller reader but never tried horror. This is a great little story and a brilliant taster into the horror genre! So I would definitely recommend it if you're looking to try out a bit of horror or even if you're just after a quick ghostly read!
Sped through this (it's only around 110 pages), but i was completely hooked the whole way, just wanting to find out what the hell was going on!

3.0 out of 5 stars 😳😳😳😳😳
My heart broke for Tom, not only on what happened on his previous job, but also what he’s going through with Jayne (his wife) and the heavy treatment and horrible disease she’s having to battle.
In some way I felt like Tom was dealing with PTSD, as well as not trying to fall down that dark hole and basically trying not break his sobriety (which I can only imagine is hard). I like how the author made us see his emotions, cause I feel like men’s emotions aren’t really talked about in books as much and what I loved more is that Tom had a journal where he was writing his thoughts down.
Tom has taken up a new job, working night shifts in some spooky warehouse, not the job he wanted but he needs the money for the care of Jayne, the house and pay the bills and also he needs to work to keep his mind distracted.
Of course this warehouse is gonna come with some spooky stuff, and literally at one point I thought it was all in Tom’s head.
Now I don’t know what type of scary film the author was watching to even come up with the way how he was describing “Grey Man”. Like I feel like I need to go buy a torch and baseball bat and keep them on guard with me in my house.
One thing I wish that was explained more, was regarding Tom’s old job and what happened with Brad. It was mentioned a few times but I wanted more, I wanted the back ground story of it.
This is a short spooky book, and all in all I enjoyed it, maybe not a good idea to read before bed, especially if every noise and sound scares you (sleeping with my lamp on).
Ohhhhh and don’t get me started on bloody Jerry, guilt got the better of him in the end I see.
