Fae Fair: A young adult portal fantasy (Lost Princess of Starlight Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 138 ratings

A magical world. A bewitching fair. An impossible promise.

Zoe longs to escape her bullying foster brother, but when she takes her horse for a ride and accidentally crosses into faery, all she wants is to return home. That is until she is hailed as a long-lost princess.

But in faery, the forest is constantly changing and dangers lurk around every corner. When Zoe's curiosity leads to the capture of the one friend she has made—the enigmatic Guardian of the Gates—she becomes bound by an unwinnable bargain to the Queen of Dawnlight.

Then there's Prince Florian. Aloof and scornful, but irresistible, he knows more about Zoe's past than she does. He may be the only one who can help her fulfil her promise to the Queen—if she can persuade him to help.

The magical fair in the centre of the forest may hold the answers Zoe seeks. But as with everything in faery, the fair may not be quite all it seems...

Fae Fair is the first in a new clean series for lovers of fae, epic fantasy, and magical bargains.

Clarissa has always lived more in the world of daydream and fiction than in reality. In her writing she explores purpose and belonging across worlds. Having never found an actual portal to faeryland, she creates her own fantastical worlds where dragons, fae and other magical creatures rule.

She now lives in the Netherlands with her family, where she writes as much as they will let her. When not reading or writing, she drinks too much tea and has a burgeoning obsession with Bundt cakes.

Clarissa is the author of the "Dragons of Kaitstud" and "Lost Princess of Starlight" YA fantasy series, and the "Expat Life" series of non-fiction guides for families moving, and living, abroad.

Clarissa Gosling's book Fae Fair, Lost Princess of Starlight 1, was a five star read! Zoe, a teenager just trying to survive end of year exams and the antics of her same-aged foster brother, stumbles into the land of the fae. As the subtitle explains, she discovers that she is the lost princess of Starlight, one of the fae kingdoms. Bound to tell the truth and always keep a promise, Zoe has to figure out how to get home when she makes a bargain with the shady queen of one of the other kingdoms. This light read includes easy-to-picture world building, characters that you aren’t sure if Zoe can trust, and the hint of a budding romance. If you love fairies, magic, and portals to other realms, then this is the perfect book for you! Easily a book I will pass along to my teens who love fantasy as much as I do!

This was a good story with lots of magic and whimsy.
There were some grammatical things that I have to chalk up to being a different dialect of English than what I'm most familiar with, but the story was fun.

This was an interesting book about a human being sent to the Fae Fair and found out she was a long lost princess of the starlight. She had to learn about her past and can’t wait to be back to finish school.

This far story of Zoe was entertaining. It seemed her fate was in her hands in the faery world. I liked the plot twists and turns.

Fae Fair is a unique imagining on what it might be like to be a lost heir to the throne of a Faerie Court. The concept is pretty neat, and there are definitely still some questions and theories I hope to see addressed in the next book! As a big fan of clean books, I appreciate that the budding romance did not focus purely on the physical attributes of the characters.

However, while I enjoyed this as a light read, I did feel that the characters’ interactions felt a little shallow at times. There were a few points where they shone well, but sometimes I found myself wishing there was a bit more insight into the characters’ emotions as they interacted. For example: Why did [insert character] do this? When did [insert character] start acting such and such way, and what event could the reader tie that change to? Answering such questions can help lead a reader to infer on a character’s feelings and then anticipate having their guess either proven or disproven, which adds flavor to a story.

The author’s choice in words was pleasantly intriguing (though it could just be because I’m American😅), and I loved the small details that she brought out (like the practicality behind the steps the character took to take care of Rascal or the fact that she chose to bring along a water bottle on a ride). A balanced usage of details helped me get deeper into the story, which did help the unsteady connection with the characters’ emotions).

Overall, I enjoyed this book as a nice light read, and I hope to see the positive elements further grow in the second book!

I was impressed with the detail of the faery lands. I was wondering if she went back home if it had all been a dream. But no, on to the next adventure. What a blessing!

Sometimes, I want light or cozy fantasy reads. This is a YA story of a 17 year old girl accidentally crosses into Faery. As she meets a guardian, he aids her in finding out more about herself and her connection to faery. The interplay between Zoe and Evan is done well as she has to trust him, she needs his help, yet doesn’t 100% know if she should. Her relationship with her horse is cool. The adventure is low key. More about how to deal with people and politics, rather than war. I enjoy that. Could have been a bit of peril or action to kick it to a 5. I recommend the book. We’ll see what book 2 brings.

I really loved this clean, YA Fae story! Zoe accidentally crosses from the human realm to the Fae realm when she is out riding to escape from her bullying foster brother. There she learns she is the missing princess of Starlight and she has to learn to navigate the tricky ways of the Fae. She gets caught in a magical bargain and must find a solution so she can return home and avoid entering any other bargains along the way.

I really liked the writing style of this book. It’s simple and easy to read, which is perfect for a young adult story, but it drew me right in and I finished it in 2 sittings (I would have finished it all in one, but work got in the way of that...). The descriptions of faery are fantastic, and the world building fits right into the story so I felt like I was there! I really liked Zoe and her determination despite difficult odds, and I also really loved her devotion to her horse Rascal. I love horses so he was such a great addition to the story! Archie the pixie is another favourite and I’m curious to see what will happen with him in the next book. If you love clean YA fantasy and are looking for a book with great characters then I can’t recommend this book enough!

I received an ARC from the author and I’m voluntarily leaving an honest review.

I really enjoyed Zoe's story and look forward to finding out how it is bound up with Florian and Evan.
The many sentence fragments were irritating.
