When a Song Ends in a Minor Key: The Complete Biography of Fiona Apple Using Her Own Words (In Her Own Words Book 2) Kindle Edition
"I extract the negative stuff. I put it in a thing and I bring out all the bad stuff. And I serve it up to everyone so that they'll give me attention. And it poisons everyone, so they only listen to it when they're in messed-up places. And it's a good sign when they stop listening to me, because that means that they're not hurting themselves on purpose." - Fiona Apple
At the tender age of 19, Fiona Apple was thrust into the limelight with her debut, Tidal, instantly becoming the poster child for mental trauma and the unhealthy 'heroin chic' body standard. However, as the decades passed, album after album, she defied these labels, emerging as a generation-defining artist, underscored by her multiple Grammy Award wins and with Pitchfork calling her latest offering, Fetch the Bolt Cutters, the greatest record in over a decade.
When a Song Ends in a Minor Key is compiled using quotes from hundreds of interviews, covering Fiona’s perspectives on music, relationships, and life in general. We further dedicate many pages to each of her releases, including When the Pawn, Extraordinary Machine, and Idler Wheel, refusing to leave any information out. This exhilarating format allows Fiona Apple to tell her own story, detailing how she overcame her addictions and disorders by opening her heart for the whole world to see. By being authentically herself without compromise, she has risen as one of the most influential songwriters in contemporary music, and it is about time such a publication praised her worth.
This celebrity biography was proudly written by a human author without the use of AI. That author is Jared Woods, the pen behind the In Her Own Words book series. These publications include the Mitski book Stay Soft, Get Eaten, and the phenomenally popular Lana Del Rey book F**ked My Way Up To The Top. Both are available now.

About the author

Born in South Africa and now a homeless nomad, Jared has explored and gathered inspiration from over 65 countries and counting. Additionally, he reads the central scripture from a different religion every year, deepening his understanding of numerous faiths and cultures. This curiosity and dedication to broad theology have greatly influenced his latest fiction book, "The Lamb Prophecy", where Jared blends fantasy with deep spiritual themes, constructing a world rich with combined mythology.
Jared is also the author of the “In Her Own Words” series of biographies about female musicians. Thus far, these include "Stay Soft, Get Eaten" for Mitski, "When a Song Ends in a Minor Key" for Fiona Apple, and the phenomenally popular "F**ked My Way Up To The Top" for Lana Del Rey. These are available right now.
There are many other works under Jared's name, such as the spiritual philosophy of the "Janthopoyism Bible", the self-help publication "Heartbreak Sucks! How to Get Over Your Breakup in 30 Days", and the collection of short stories "Licking the Bottom of the Love Jar".

- Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2024Just finished the book. Incredible writing. Loved all the quote pop outs very creative. Easy read great for our generation. Her and I have the same birthday and year. We’re like the same person. But a little different it was like reading about myself at times. Great work! I’ve recently written journals about my journey through life and my complex PTSD and want to publish a book. I may one day. Thank you for inspiring me both the author Jared Woods and Fiona Apple.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2024I couldn’t put this book down! It’s very well-written & thoroughly researched. As a long time Fiona Apple fan, it’s awesome to be able to get more context and details about her life and career. You just fall in love with her even more after reading this! I loved how it was written in mostly her own words and all the little rabbit holes it took me down as I discovered songs and performances I’d never heard before. Well done!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2025Love this bio. It uses Fiona Apple's own words so it's almost like she's telling the story herself. Loads of great quotes, and a comprehensive story. Also enjoyed this author's book on Lana del Rey.

Fiona Apple
I’m starting to become a bigger fan of biographies, especially of well named artists in the music industry. Fiona Apple has always been a distant name to me but reading this book has helped me learn so much more about her that would have taken forever to do by just googling her name.
Jared Woods never misses with the amazing detailed biographies. I’m always so intrigued about the artist’s way of becoming who they are from how organized the information is in the book.
Quotes by Fiona Apple
“I like who I am now, and I wouldn’t be who I am if that hadn’t happened.”
“How much strength does it take to hurt a little girl? How much strength does it take for the girl to get over it? Which one of them do you think is stronger?
Thank you so much to Booksprout for giving me this arc!!

- Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2024Realize from the outset that this is mostly a collection of quotes from and about Fiona. There's very little original writing by the author. But if you've been hanging on Fiona's every word (in songs and interviews!) for decades, this is an amazing and detailed compilation that you can't pass up. I even learned a few things that I missed along the way!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2024Fiona Apple is a singer who sounds even better live. All she needs is a microphone and a piano, and she delivers an electrifying performance. This book is essentially a collection of her quotes about her music and her life. As a diehard fan, I enjoyed reading this book. I also found the premise of this book novel. It’s a biography that is essentially made from a collection of her interview quotes, so it’s a biography in her own words. This book felt like a treasure chest full of her deepest thoughts and feelings, and I think fans will like this book. But even if you’ve never heard of her, many of her quotes are gems.
Here’s an example of quote that stands out. About being raped at twelve, she says, “How much strength does it take to hurt a little girl? How much strength does it take for a girl to get over it? Which of them do you think is stronger?” As a sexual abuse survivor myself, I couldn’t agree more.
She also discusses her eating disorder and how it was never about being thin and attractive. Instead because she was raped while she was starting to develop as a young girl, she wanted to erase the very features that seemed to make her body a target. She was essentially trying as a young person to find safety in a body that felt dangerous to inhabit. Mental health practitioners interested in trauma will find her perspective helpful in understanding the connection between trauma and the various ways a young person tries to cope and reestablish stability in an unsafe world. Those who suffer similarly may find comfort in the articulate way she describes her personal experiences.
Overall, she is an artist who had something to say and the courage to say it. This book is a collection of many of those words not only about her music but her life.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2024I've been a fan of Ms. Apple since Tidal, but really didn't know much about her other than the albums; so this was a no brainer for me.
The author uses a rather unique format: he'll write a paragraph or 2, & then flesh it out with quotes from Fiona.
I definitely came away knowing quite a bit more about the artist behind the great music she's released. I also learned that there are 2 complete but different versions of her 3rd album, Extraordinary Machine. Now I have to find the unreleased version!
The only thing I was aware of that's missing is her live version of Trump roasting nuts to the tune of the Christmas song; though he does mention another anti Trump song from Fiona that I wasn't aware of.
Fiona comes across as a good & strong person who has successfully defeated a number of challenges, including turning addiction into 100% sobriety.
While the unique format took a little while to get comfortable with, I recommend this for any fans of Ms Apple.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

5.0 out of 5 stars About time
Thanks buddy! Why’d it take so friggin long for someone to do this? Fiona has been forever present in my adult life, continuing to excite and push expectations. I really enjoyed the format, a refreshing way to present a biography, very user friendly, not bogged down in too many people/place names, which I often find quite dull.
Essential reading for Fiona fans, this is a journal with documented quotes from a whole bunch of interviews and it’s such a great idea! Thanks again!
I have to confess, I posted the first part of this review with such excitement, I couldn’t wait till I finished, but now I have. Quite simply, if you read this book, engage yourself with Fiona’s words you can’t help but feel such enlightenment. The world ain’t so bad with Fiona in it, and I’m not even talking about her music. Fans who read this, will feel reassured they are on the right path in life, will feel empowered by her sense of self. Never bowing, always a true voice, always there to pick you up by putting herself in her place. Like Bukowski, she sees the world through an undiluted lense, which makes you feel it’s okay to go through the crap, it helps you become who you are, the dark stuff is essential for self understanding, growth and survival.
I love this book! Thank you so much!

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Written 10/10
I absolutely loved reading this! It’s a must have for a Fiona fan and it’s a must read for anyone who is curious about her. The passion that was put into writing about her dissecting her words and taking readers through her career with great detail and organization of the timelines was absolutely impeccable. I can’t recommend it enough very very well done.

5.0 out of 5 stars Informative & Interesting
As someone who don’t normally read biographies I really enjoyed this book.
The author delved deep and, mostly through using Fiona’s own words, revealed so many interesting things about her that I had no idea about.
