- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2025"Flume" sucked me in from the very first chapter. I only put it down once (because I had to :D).
Told from the perspective of a twelve-year-old boy, this story is a fast paced tale of three friends braving a giant waterslide for a birthday celebration. But the real story is the protagonist's emotional journey as he faces the mystery of his past as well as his greatest fears.
With an interesting cast of characters and an original story that still somehow feels nostalgic, "Flume" provides both a fun read and a lot of food for thought. By the time I reached the end, I felt like I'd made the harrowing descent right along with the three main characters, with all of the tension and suspense (but none of the danger they faced). Since finishing, it's remained on my mind as I've contemplated the unexpected ending and the revelations reached by the protagonist. This is one I plan to share with my kids.
If you enjoy a good mystery wrapped in a heart-racing adventure, I'd definitely recommend this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 202512-year-old Shanks is faced with his greatest fears alongside his two eclectic friends, Yam and Flo, on his birthday, at the urging of his uncle who is simply known as "Captain."
The premise of this book is unique and fun, and promises adventure from the start. The characters are memorable, and the story is descriptive and fun and imaginative. Definitely worth a read!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2025Flume, by Bigfoot, is an adolescent's psychological journey while experiencing a 33 minute flume ride, that open's his locked away memories of one of the biggest tragedies of his life. The ride down the Summit is 1640 feet with excentric features that a well-known seafarer named Mr. Poppity included in its construction (a lagoon, a bunch of animatronic penguins, a waterfall, and more). Shanks, the main character, is given the unwanted gift of a ticket to this Flume ride and his fear of swimming and water causes his memories to resurface in each of the sections of the ride. Through descriptive and figurative language, Bigfoot, takes the reader on this same journey through the flume and Shanks' flashbacks of his tragedy. I read the entire book in one sitting as I couldn't put it down. It was as if you were another rider in the Summit with Shanks and his two outcast friends. I love how it is a totally different way of writing and it reminds me of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea mixed with Journey to the Center of the Earth. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2025At times, this story is a breathtaking ride through an impossible, exhilarating, wish-I-could-be-there, amusement park ride. At others, the reader is pulled into the main character's internal battle as he struggles to piece together snippets and scraps of tantalizing clues to a trauma that remains just beyond his grasp. Filled with zany characters, rich descriptive scenes, and an emotional rollercoaster even more intense than the ride, I couldn't stop reading until the shocking end. Truly a story like nothing I've ever read before, can't wait to see what the author comes up with next! You won't regret taking a ride on the Flume!

5.0 out of 5 stars A realistic fantasy adventure!
This story has as many twists and turns as the Flume itself! As the journey gets more challenging and mysterious, so do Shanks' flashbacks. As he works through the truth of his past, he begins to understand the Flume and its Core with more clarity than you'd expect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, thrilling and slightly terrifying!
Flume made for a thrilling read, full of quirky character and creatures, and with dark secrets that the main character, Shanks, gradually uncovers as he descends the terrifying flume.
I love the idea of a gargantuan flume in the middle of London – I would ride it every day! For Shanks, however, the flume represents his fear of water, and his out-of-control descent on the flume correlates with the gradual unfolding of his long suppressed memories about what happened, exactly, to make him fear water in the first place.
There’s plenty of mayhem and adventure as Shanks and his friends go off course, and delve into the ‘core’ of the flume, where the weird imaginings and inventions of Poppity – the inventor of the flume – run amok.
I’d recommend this to anyone who likes fast-paced, zany adventure stories that aren’t afraid to delve into darker themes. This is a truly original story and well worth your time.
