For a Good Time, Call... (Bluewater Bay Book 17) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 89 ratings

The Bluewater Bay stories can be enjoyed in any order — jump in wherever you'd like!

Thirty-seven-year-old Nate Albano’s second relationship ever ended three years ago, and since he’s grace — gray asexual — he doesn’t anticipate beating the odds to find a third. Still, he’s got his dog, his hobbies, and his job as a special effects technician on Wolf’s Landing, so he can’t complain — much.

Seth Larson, umpteenth generation Bluewater Bay, is the quintessential good-time guy, content with tending bar and being his grandmother’s handyman. The night they meet, Seth’s looking for some recreational sex to escape family drama. But for Nate, romantic attraction comes before sexual attraction, so while Seth thinks they’re hooking up, Nate just wants to talk . . . genealogy?

Dude. Seriously?

So they declare a “just friends” truce. Then Seth asks for Nate’s help investigating a sinister Larson family secret, and their feelings start edging way beyond platonic. But Nate may want more than Seth can give him, and Seth may not be able to leave his good-time image behind. Unless they can find a way to merge carefree with commitment, they could miss out on true love —
the best time of all.

Review

"What I loved:* The gray-ace representation was A+++++* Amazing relationship and character building* Steady story progression that hooked me from page one* Tarkus. TARKUS.* FAGTC fits seamlessly into the Bluewater Bay 'verseWhat I didn't love:* Nothing.* Well, it ended, and I wasn't ready to stop reading Nate and Seth's story. I want more!" --OMG Reads
"This book is part of the larger Bluewater Bay universe, but is enjoyable on its own. ... I loved Tarkus, the one-eyed wonder dog. What a great companion that mutt is, and it was clear that Nate learned a lot about unconditional love from him, while Seth drew his strength from his grandma. This is a slow burn, not least because it's a long novel. Lots of patience is exercised before their sexual connection is kindled, but I found it worth the wait." -

"The romance was a slow burn, as is fitting for a-spec people, and it was friends to lovers, which is a favorite of mine. I loved the historical aspects and how Nate and Seth worked together to research Seth's family, both for personal interest and to help his grandma out of a difficult situation with her sons. There was also a lot of character development in both main characters, as well as some of the side characters, which was really fun to watch even if I experienced secondhand embarrassment for some of it. Also, I loved watching their relationship develop from friendship to relationship. The progression of friendship to companionship and closeness to sexuality and intimacy was so beautiful, and it really resonated with me, as someone who is a-spec."
--Small Queer, Big Opinions

"Due to Nate's sexuality, the slow burn of friendship to romance in this book was sweet rather than overtly sexy. The necessary romantic conflict at the end was a realistic breakdown in communication caused by Seth and Nate's very different life experiences. Like most of my favorite Bluewater Bay books so far, the couple didn't exist in a vacuum. The secondary characters in this story, such as Nate's BFF Morgan and Seth's delightful grandmother, really brought this tale to life. "

Would love to see more romance books with 'grace' or greysexual characters. It does wonderful job showing some people need to develop romantic feelings before attraction happens.

There were moments while reading this book that I forgot it was a romance novel. It's just that the romantic element felt like a subplot to all the craziness going on regarding Seth's familial estate, but we happened to also spend a lot of time in Nate's brain as he angsted about Seth.

Despite the revitalization thanks to the "Hollywood invasion," this book really brought to life the fact that the town of Bluewater Bay was around long beforehand. I enjoyed learning more about the town's history, especially because the Larson story brought to life some of the darker aspects of American history that should not be forgotten.

Due to Nate's sexuality, the slow burn of friendship to romance in this book was sweet rather than overtly sexy.

4.5 stars. I was a little leery going in because I don't often click with Tenino's humor, it feels super OTT to me most of the time, but it's clear Russell toned that way down here, making it an enjoyable part of the story rather than the focus. I also haven't read all the Bluewater Bay books, and I have only liked a couple of those that I have. So, lots of reservations.
But I loved it! Seth is so sweet, and a great mix of knowing exactly who he is, but still having doubts about his worthiness. Nate. I adore Nate, but it is great that he's not perfect, and that he's forced to face his role in things that haven't gone so well in his life. This is definitely slow burn, which I enjoy anyway, but also fits Nate in particular. I know a little about ACE identity, but it was so well-written here that I always felt like I understood it perfectly while reading, even while I felt Seth's frustration at times. The background on their families informed their characters and while I felt a little like Seth's family situation wasn't resolved, I'm assuming that it will be/was resolved in a future book in the series. I also felt like there was a bit of Ally excusing in the beginning of the book (putting the onus back on Queer people to explain themselves) it wasn't heavy handed and I understand what they were saying even if I'm not completely on board with the position.
Overall, this is a great story, and I will re-read it. Nate's and Seth's relationship is a beautiful love story, full of the warmest feelings.

    2.5 Stars - DNF 67%

I thought I could do this but apparently not.. It's been almost 4 years since I more of less abandoned this series. But I DID want to read this one by Anne as I've enjoyed so many of her books before and also I LOVE slow burn and this one was sure to deliver (with one of our MCs being "Grace"). Sadly though I liked both Nate and Seth the plot and basically everything that brought them together was, well, boring.

Seth Larson have been living in Bluewater Bay his whole life, more than that his family is one of the founding families. Not that it makes him feel anything positive about them.. Mostly estranged to them besides his grandmother whom he lives with and helps maintain the family mansion. She actually had enough and she wants to sell, but no one else beside her would agree and since she doesn't have a true hold on her estate or money she isn't sure how to go about it. Seth would do anything to help her, and getting to know Nate proofs to be handy on that account (and a lot more..).

Nate Albano likes his life, he has a job he enjoys working on the set of "Wolf's Landing" on the special effects team going home to his dog. He misses having someone in his life, but being Gray Asexual makes things complicated so it's no wonder when he meets Seth for the first time he totally misses the innuendo thinking Seth is actually interested in talking about history about his family/town.. Well, Seth wasn't.. or he was.. but he also REALLY wanted to get into Nate's pants..

After sorting things out they decide to become friends and it seems to work exceptionally well making both men a bit unsure about where they stand with each other as both start to develop feelings towards one another. I gotta say, I actually got to the point they "do something" about their feelings and it was mostly awkward. I think I would have been more inclined to keep on reading if it was somehow "better". But as it was Seth and Nate's plans to help his grandma sell the house and uncover a family mystery was just not working for me so at 67% I decided to let this one go. I feel like I truly gave it a fair chance mostly because I liked THEM but everything around them... not so much...

    1) As odd as the term asexual romance may seem to some, I quite liked the way this approached the idea of romance, connection, and bonding before intimacy. Lovable characters and the family mystery helped move things along.

One of my favorite authors, and a different approach to relationships. Very enjoyable story.

More drama in Bluewater Bay. This time around it’s Nate and Seth who give us another layer of life in the Bay. Other familiar characters pop in for some added flavor.

I did struggle a bit with this book. Maybe too many real-world distractions kept me reading only a few pages at a time. But then a great book is supposed to take you away from your surroundings. For that, this one felt like a school reading assignment I needed to finish by Halloween. Which I did, so there’s that. 3.0 for solo frisbee: dog style
