- Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is a good solid action story that accomplishes what the author set out to do, but it begins in media res and ends in that manner as well. It's a snapshot of a larger tale, essentially, and partially unsatisfying in that regard. Stewart is a good writer and this is a wonderful way to get a taste of his writing style, but I wanted more from this than I got. (I know that sounds weird, but I'm perfectly okay with this story because it means I would have preferred a novel of his instead of a short story. It's a good little interlude! Bring on the novels!)
- Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseNot really a short story but a scene. The opening promised a lot but the story couldn’t deliver a resolution. The setting is well written and the idea of combining a diesel-like world with a medieval-style Knight is highly original. If the purpose was to tease the reader, it was successful. The author proved they can engage the reader with their prose and tempt them with longer works that might be worth sampling.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseNot enough to understand what’s going on, too many ideas and hints thrown around without enough story to answer them. It’s well written, but frustratingly short.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseRead as an ARC. This one is a very short story that serves as an introduction to this new universe. I will be interested to read more. This one only gets the 4 stars because it is so short that neither the universe nor the characters really have any chance at development. Think of it as a 'trailer' for the books to come!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI think this is my first introduction to Dieselpunk.
The idea of motorcycle riding gunslinging knight protecting the realm was an interesting one for me.
This is a short story, but it had me wishing and hoping for more of the story and more of the world.
I received an advanced review copy and these are my honest opinions.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseVery interesting story. Post Apocalyptic with Knights that guard the realm on motorcycles. Knight of Cadrellion Afageon must by time for the villagers so they can escape the raiders. Loved it! Hope more is coming soon.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is a short, so it leaves more questions than answers, but that's the point. I'm really curious to learn more about this world and its people.
Motorcycle knights is a fascinating concept to me, too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dystopian Retelling of Horatius at the Bridge?
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is almost like a dystopian retelling of Horatius at the Bridge. I got lots of Arthurian knightly vibes from this scene, so I recommend this to fans of Arthurian legend. However, the story seems a little too abrupt - more like a recording of a scene than a story. I hope the author plans to flesh this out because I can see a novel similar to Martin's "Wasteland Marshals" arising out of this scene.
