- Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2024Francine is quickly loveable and extremely relatable in this first of the Francine Witt Mystery series. Like Francine, who doesn’t love some budget friendly wine? Not exactly the journalism she had in mind, Francine has quickly gained a following on her blog recommending budget wines, and lately chronicling a few local, high end wine heists. With an agent adapt at using her following to book her a reoccurring morning show appearance and gaining her tickets to an auction for a pricey Egyptian bottle of wine, she still yearns to be a “real” journalist.
Running into several archaeologists who were also booked on UK’s leading morning show, she hears of their experiences, history, and the exhibition the are getting ready to open at the British Museum to commemorate the life of Queen Nefertiti. Coincidentally, these archaeologists are also interested in the bottle of wine up for auction as it is covered in hieroglyphs rumored to house the key to a treasure, potentially that of Nefertiti’s undiscovered tomb. But, when the wine popular wine thieves show up and leave their mark on the auction, Francine becomes entangled. Shortly thereafter archaeologists begin mysteriously dying.
Author Steve Exeter artfully brings to the page a fun mystery. Using wine, and powerful females, both from the past and the present, “Full Bodied” delights readers from the first sip to the last. With thieves readers root for, estranged siblings, and an embroiled past interwoven amongst the search for Queen Nefertiti’s lost tomb, Exeter’s read puts a spin on Nicolas Cage’s “National Treasure” movies, with more attractive main characters, more appealing rivalries, and of course, wine!
I loved the intrigue surrounding Queen Nefertiti. As an equal ruler by her husband’s side, she possessed real power, something not heard of in Egyptian times, and rarely possessed even in modern society it seems. Learning a bit about Egyptian history, the workings of archaeology, and the governmental sensitivity to dig sites, “Full Bodied” was truly entertaining, mysterious, and exquisite.
As the pieces settle into place, the hieroglyphs unravel, and Francine’s journalism skills are put to the test, “Full Bodied” offers a delightful pairing of theft, death, and investigative heft.

Francine’s transition from wine influencer to investigator is a fun journey, and her character is both relatable and witty. The blend of ancient Egyptian history and modern wine culture keeps things fresh and engaging.
Steve Exeter’s attention to detail, especially the inclusion of ancient Egyptian elements, adds depth to the story. The mystery unfolds at a perfect pace, keeping readers hooked with clever twists and charming illustrations that give the book a unique touch. It’s a cozy mystery with just the right amount of suspense.
For fans of lighthearted mysteries with strong, smart female leads, this is a delightful read. Exeter has managed to create a cozy mystery that’s both fun and thought-provoking, making FULL BODIED a must-read for mystery lovers.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2025Didn’t expect to get hooked so fast, but Francine is hilarious and oddly brilliant.
One minute she’s sipping Margaux, the next she’s dodging dead Egyptologists.
The Egyptian history parts were actually super interesting, and the mystery kept twisting until the very end.
I also liked how the book didn’t take itself too seriously but still had clever details throughout.
Light but smart—definitely one of the most fun reads I’ve had this year.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 16, 2024This well-researched cozy murder mystery with an intriguing ancient Egyptian history was quite enjoyable. It's not just your average thriller either—it's hilarious and full of unexpected turns. Francine is a great character and her transition from bored influencer to investigative reporter was amazing. She also got her feminism back. This tale keeps you guessing as you read. Combined with lovely wine and modern single life, this is a fun read. The charming illustrations at the beginning of each chapter added a touch of whimsy too which was fun. Recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2025I really enjoyed this light-hearted mystery. Fran is an appealing, relatable and fun character who writes about wine for a living and appears on a weekly TV show segment. During the story she meets some even more quirky characters with interesting motivations--including the dodgy Dick and Terry who steal expensive wine from upmarket restaurants as a hobby. I did find it odd though that Fran seems to have no close friends to share her crazy escapades with. The Egyptology angle and the backstory related to the 1940's archaeological digs add further interest, plus the background detail about Queen Nefertiti's influence during her reign. The ending is satisfying and the author manages to pull all the threads together--and thankfully answered a couple of questions that were playing on my mind about two of the characters. My only complaint is that it needs some more proofreading (e.g. misplaced commas and quote marks) and there's the occasional odd use of a word where it doesn't seem to fit, e.g. surmised. But that didn't affect my enjoyment of the book at all, and I'd recommend it to anyone who likes cozy mysteries narrated in the voice of a quirky, contemporary female lead with a good sense of humor.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2025What a great work of creative writing! Obviously, based on the cover, I was expecting a fun mystery that revolved around wine, but I found so much more. The author brought in so many other interesting topics—like the history of Nefertiti and the ethics of archaeology—and somehow wove them into a cohesive, fast-paced narrative with a number of unexpected twists. I also loved the well-developed characters, especially the narrator, Francine, who brings so much humor and relatability to the story. I think fans of lighthearted, yet interesting cozies will find this book is as rich and satisfying as—dare I say it?—a full-bodied wine.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful read for those who enjoy mystery novels with a bit of humour.
FULL BODIED: A Francine Witt Mystery offers an engaging mix of mystery, humour, and feminist flair. Francine Witt, a wine expert and influencer, stumbles upon the story of a lifetime when a 1943 Margaux—rumoured to be linked to Queen Nefertiti’s treasure—is stolen at an auction. As she navigates the world of Egyptology and murder, Francine’s wit and determination make her an appealing protagonist. The novel combines the clever twists of an Agatha Christie mystery with the relatable charm of the various Helen Jones’ Bridget Jones Diaries, adding layers of intrigue and unexpected humour. Though some plot points may stretch plausibility, the well-paced narrative keeps readers hooked. FULL BODIED: A Francine Witt Mystery is a delightful read for those who enjoy mysteries with a dash of wine, a touch of history, and a strong female lead.

5.0 out of 5 stars First and foremost it’s a fun read
Full Bodied is a whimsical and enjoyable read. Francine is an aspiring wine critic and blogger and she finds growing success when she reports on a young pair of high-quality wine thieves. When the opening of an exhibition of Egyptian artefacts linked to Queen Nefertiti has one of its presenters poisoned, Francine’s life changes as she becomes embroiled in a web of mystery, skulduggery, and murder.
Steve Exeter writes with skill and in this relatively short novel he keeps the pace fast, the characters snappy and the fun first and foremost. Full Bodied would make a great holiday read and despite not being the target reader, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Grab yourself a glass of wine and enjoy the ride as Francine unravels the whodunnit.

4.0 out of 5 stars Simple fun
The book goes from and between chick-flick, mystery, and drama. As mentioned in a paragraph, the tale has got an Agatha Christie + Indiana Jones vibe, but I wish there was a bit more depth to each of those. Still, it does a good job of being the good fun to be the casual, somewhat jocular narrative action book it is.

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect book to read with a glass of wine. You won’t feel like you’re drinking alone.
Steve Exeter weaves a multi-stranded tale in which Francine must navigate a landscape of wine thieves, ancient treasures, murders, modern greed, and troubled families. The mood is mellow and casual, with mounting tension and sudden homicide. I’m usually a science fiction and fantasy reader, but I like to branch out occasionally, and I’m glad I picked up Full Bodied. I had loads of fun and learned more about wine and Egyptian history, all in one quick read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cozy Mystery
“Full Bodied” is a captivating mix of mystery and historical adventure, following Francine as she transforms from a cranky blogger into a fearless investigative journalist. Watching her grow and embrace her values as a strong, independent woman gives the story an extra layer of heart.
I especially loved the letters exchanged between Harold and Penelope — their time in Egypt was packed with tension, surprises, and heartfelt moments.
This charming, quick-moving tale is filled with humor, intrigue, and unexpected twists, making it a fantastic pick for anyone who loves a cozy mystery with a little extra spark. Highly recommend!
