Nothing... absolutely nothing was going to stop the MC/Producer named Funky DL from taking the Hip-Hop scene by storm. Seemingly out of nowhere, he emerged into the game, armed only with a few demos, but ended up becoming one of the few true pioneers of the scene.

DL instantly stood out because his music contrasted much of the intense and raw sound being created by others. Instead, his sound was smooth, colorful and poetically playful, with vibrant melodies and jazz-laiden layers reminiscent of the music by A Tribe Called Quest and Pete Rock.

He began to take his musical magic worldwide and became more widely known across Japan and subsequently the United States. With a catalogue of music unmatched, Funky DL consistently continued to create and release a high standard of tracks, acquiring a slew of fans throughout his journey.

Funky DL shared the stage at live events with a host of major label artists by providing support for Destiny's Child, K-Ci and JoJo, Eminem, Dr Dre and The Roots, as well as sharing the mic live on radio with the likes of Nas and Pete Rock.

DL's production is widely revered and has piqued the interest of Jill Scott and Stetsasonic. His production experience has now transcended genres and he is as proficient in dance music as he has been in the world of hip-hop.

Funky DL's depth and understanding of the music industry as an independent artist compelled him to write his book on pursuing a successful career in the business to inspire fellow independent artists seeking to embark on a similar journey.

    I have been a follower and a fan of Funky DL and his music since 1997… and in that time have built a deep respect for him and curiosity for how he’s “done it”. From the outside, what I’ve observed is consistent hard work, consistent high quality and a commitment to back himself and his art.

    It’s not unusual for artists to self-release their work in today’s digital marketplace but back in 1996/97 it was hard work, expensive, risky… and visionary.

    This book offers a unique insight in to how he’s “done it”… and cleverly uses his own anecdotal experiences to frame real world challenges faced by independent artists and a mindset with which to meet those. His story is amazing and the opportunity to learn from it a gift… essential reading for all artists!
