The Last House in Lambton: A Pride & Prejudice Variation Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 1,874 ratings

Does it ever stop raining in Lambton?

Darcy and Bingley depart Netherfield Park, leaving Elizabeth Bennet acutely aware of the monotony of her life. Seeking a reprieve, she volunteers to serve as temporary companion to Mrs. Gardiner’s elderly aunt who lives in Lambton. Nothing turns out as Elizabeth expects, and she is forced to dig deep into her reserves of common sense, humor, and stubborn persistence to prove herself equal to the dreary circumstances.

Initially unaware that Pemberley is only five miles away, Elizabeth crosses paths with Darcy annoyingly often. When the gentleman rescues her from a shocking situation, Elizabeth faces some hard choices, at the same time struggling against the smoldering attraction that can neither be repressed nor fulfilled.

Mr. Darcy, meanwhile, in whose heart a fire has also been lit, is shocked by the lady’s stubborn refusal to accept his help. Alternating between alarm and begrudging admiration, he stands helplessly on the sidelines while she struggles to retain her independence. He, too, must make some hard choices in the end. Will he let her go?

I love all of this author's books, and this one was no exception. This book is told in first person, with sections that alternate between Elizabeth's POV and Darcy's. Each time, multiple chapters are told from Elizabeth's POV, and then the book switches to Darcy's POV, goes back to the beginning of the time period that we just read, and essentially summarizes his viewpoint of that same time period. Personally, I wasn't a big fan of that approach, largely because real life is crazy busy for me right now, leaving me to read the book in snatches of time spread out over more than a week. Because of that, I struggled to remember what had happened in some of the earlier scenes when Darcy referred to them without giving any details. I also found it unnecessary in general to see Darcy's POV, since it carried through well when I was reading Elizabeth's. Still, if your life is less crazy, and you can read the whole book at once, as it deserves to be read, you aren't likely to have that issue and will probably enjoy savoring his viewpoint.

Since that was the only aspect of the book that didn't entirely work for me, I do absolutely recommend it. As always with this author, every character was interesting and well fleshed out, they interacted with each other beautifully and learned from each other, and they grew in meaningful ways. The plotline was unique and intriguing, and there were many moments that made me laugh, as well as some that had me at the edge of my seat.

Overall, this was thoroughly enjoyable love story with all the right components, including well-thought-out philosophical moments. If you've read anything else by this author, you know to read this book. If you haven't discovered her yet, you have the wonderful treat ahead of you of reading this along with all of her other works. She's truly a gem in the P&P world.

I can't remember the last time I was so delighted by a variation. I read lots of different types of romance including LGBTQ and the sorts of romances that are squeaky clean and the sorts that are very definitely not, and this felt like something of a gift in that it didn't try very hard to be either extreme, though it's never beyond kissing. While lots of things happen in the book, the focus is on character development and I was completely charmed by both D and E's growth. G plays a larger part in this book and also grows in ways that make her much more 3 dimensional than she's usually allowed to be. In this version, Darcy's not too awful and Elizabeth isn't too amazing to be believed. I struggled to put it down to work (I teach. It would have been noticed.)

I cannot recommend it enough, so long as you do not mind a significant departure from the original storyline after Bingley leaves Netherfield. It's very well done.

This is another lovely story by this author... And though Old Boots will always be my favorite, this is almost as good... I love authors who humanize these characters by day to day dialogue and interaction, adding some humor and a gradual build up to the romance, and this author does this so well... She is also just a good writer who weaves an interesting tale... Here, she gives us Elizabeth's viewpoint and then Darcy's, so you can see what each one of our main characters are going through... And in Elizabeth's case, it's alot... Longing to get away from her mother's irritating reaction to the Collins refusal of marriage, Lizzy volunteers to take care of an ailing great Aunt of her own Aunt Gardiner in Lambton... Upon her arrival, challenges immediately set in, but Elisabeth refuses to be defeated by her surroundings... The old Aunt is in the throes of dementia, and I feel for Lizzy, as I also have been a caregiver for aging parents... The work is hard, but rewarding, until a dangerous situation leads to our hero saving the day and true love prevails... A good story by a wonderful writer... I eagerly await her next!

5.0 out of 5 stars An incredibly beautiful solitude
Reviewed in Brazil on March 28, 2023
Shortly after the departure of Mr. Bingley of Netherfield, life at Longbourn descends into a state of apathy, aggravated by Jane's restrained feeling and interrupted only by Mrs. Bennet's lamentations.
Then comes the opportunity to leave the house, in search of new meanings for life, and Elizabeth volunteers to take care of Mrs. Jennings, aunt of Mrs. Gardiner who lives in Lambton, for approximately three months.
The place is inhospitable, as it is the last and most isolated house in the village and the residents are unreceptive or hostile. The lady suffers from memory problems, often does not remember who Elizabeth is and lives practically without contact with other people.
Despite the days being occupied with caring for the elderly woman (to whom she is attached) and for her home, Elizabeth's heart feels empty and meaningless in the midst of the cold and isolation. He misses contact with her family, friends, the pleasure of reading, the human warmth.
Everything starts to change when she meets Mrs. Reynolds in Lambton and discovers, not only that she could ask for and receive help, but that she is in the vicinity of Pemberley, which makes her find Mr. Darcy. They will experience a relationship initially marked by embarrassing and difficult moments but which blossoms little by little and we see, through the eyes of both, a journey of growth, care for others, small and big victories and also failures, but mainly to know and recognize yourself and the other.
I rarely imagined that solitude could be so beautiful!

I have had this book in my kindle library for some time and read others before it with flashier covers or titles... I thought I should get to it and am so happy I did. Great story, loved the characters and though I'm not usually a fan of first person, really loved how Elizabeth and Darcy each told the story from their perspectives. Well done!! Lovely interesting writing and I will be rereading this story another time as I do my favorites and looking for more from this author.

I don’t usually like first person stories but this was exceptionally well written and bought the characters to life in a way that mere story telling very rarely does.

I read it in one sitting and will, no doubt, be reading it again very soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Trüb und düster - und dann darf die Sonne scheinen!
Reviewed in Germany on November 22, 2022
