Siobhan Daiko is a British historical fiction author. A lover of all things Italian, she lives in the Veneto region of northern Italy with her husband, a Havanese dog and a Siberian cat. Siobhan was born of English parents in Hong Kong, attended boarding school in Australia, and then moved to the UK — where she taught modern foreign languages in a Welsh high school. She now spends her time writing page-turners and living the dolce vita sweet life near Venice. Her novels are compelling, poignant, and deeply moving, with strong characters and evocative settings, but always with romance at their heart. I absolutely loved this book! The characters were amazing! I could not help but love them all. They were all so brave and I could not help but wonder how they could remain so strong considering what they suffered through during the occupation. Just a wonderful story.

Interesting historical novel about WW2 Bologna, with many details about this historic city.
The Italian Resistance is well-depicted. It is also a romance novel, spanning three generations. Regional Italian food and wine are also well-described.
A good, quick read. Plan to read her other two related novels about Italy.

Although it had great storyline it did not drag on. Leila did write her memoirs and it was part of her life I did not read all of them as they were a little to time consuming. I passed over many of them but I don't feel anything was lost in the story.

I loved this story that interweaves WWII history in Bologna with current day. Romance and adventure kept my attention. I visited Bologna a few years ago and loved the old part of town and the Partisans’ photos on the wall. The city, it’s food and historical structures are woven throughout, and made this story even more special. A great read!

Beautiful book. Sad but these stories need to be told. Let us never forget just how evil and how brave some people can be.

5.0 out of 5 stars The girl from Bologna
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 6, 2022
This is a very well researched book and what struck me most was the way the author drew you into the story with an explanation of the history and politics of the time and how that went on to influence and shape the present day of Bologna. But first and foremost, this is a romantic novel about people, about love, and about life. The author weaves a story which draws the reader in and the characters are real people and you live with them through all their trials and tribulations in this wonderful book. What struck me especially was how well the author understands Italy and its people. She writes the Italians how they are, and this is rare. Having lived in Italy myself for many years all too often a non Italian author writing about Italy and its people gets it wrong and out pops a cliche not a real Italian, not so with Siobhan Daiko. She constructs all her characters with sensitivity and understanding of human nature including the Italians. The story is gripping but also very real and takes you into that fascinating city which is, and always has been central to Italy geopoliticallly.
