“This book is for folk challenged with being/becoming their authentic selves in the face of rigid religious straightjackets. It's also for people who are working at the coalface of human rights addressing abuse and evil in our world.”
- Sharon Wilkinson, International Development Worker
“Glenn has survived so much in his life on this earth. Yet he has also thrived and has emerged with more grace and love than almost anyone I have known. His vision and passion to advocate for and support other survivors and those who are vulnerable, has defined his life in Wales, the UK and around the world for the decades I have known him. Now, for the first time, he is telling his own story with raw vulnerability and honesty, giving insight into his experiences and in doing so, is speaking out, raising awareness and breaking down barriers, especially in the faith community, where silence and ignorance has often thrived. I hope these words inspire others to do the same.”
- Helen Sworn, Founder of Chab Dai International
“This book is a testament to just how far perseverance and faith can take you, even in the face of immense challenges. Through his unwavering honesty and humour, Glenn offers the reader hope found in unlikely places – and more than a few challenging insights along the way. If you need a reminder that you can get through just about anything and still make a beautiful difference in the world, this story is for you.”

With honesty, vulnerability, and humility, he shares fascinating experiences and heartfelt reflections, offering readers a personal connection. - Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2024The Irish teacher and poet John O’Donohue penned a blessing for friendship that starts like this,
“May you be blessed with good friends,
And learn to be a good friend to yourself,
Journeying to that place in your soul where
There is love, warmth, and feeling.
May this change you.”
As I read Glenn’s words in his autobiography I felt as though I was witnessing his soul be torn open and exposed, left vulnerable, in a way that is so rare today that it is uncomfortable to witness. I wanted to help him cover it and at times it was hard to read. After finishing his great chronicle, I now feel that I journeyed with him as he learned to be a good friend to himself. I traveled with him as he befriended and listened to ignored and forgotten people all over the world. I clearly saw him offer love and warmth to those who were suffering. This is an impressively authentic true story filled with adventure, adversity, and questioning. It is relevant to the modern reader in this disconnected world. Glenn has a lot to teach all of us by the way he changed and learned to show himself love. I am thankful for the way his vulnerability encourages me to journey to that same place in my own soul. Shame can only thrive in silence and Glenn made sure to break open shame with this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Heartfelt and Soul-Nourishing Read
This is a beautifully written and deeply reflective book that explores the power of love, faith, and connection, not just with others, but with ourselves and with God. The concept of "Cwtch-ing" (a warm, safe embrace) is woven throughout the book, reminding us of the importance of belonging, self-acceptance, and spiritual connection in our healing journey.
He writes with authenticity, wisdom, and compassion, making this book both thought-provoking and comforting. Whether you are on a personal journey of faith, healing from past wounds, or simply looking for a book that uplifts the soul, this is a must-read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and interesting read
This book has so much to offer, there is something for everyone. Glenn has lead such an interesting life, he has inspired me to want to work with people in other countries. He is open and honest about the trial and tribulations he has endured. I highly recommend, especially to male survivors or anyone struggling to be their true self.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly insightful memoir of a man who's took back control of his life after abuse
I wasn't prepared for this memoir- to read a book written by a man about sexual abuse, bullying and coming out as a gay man in his 60s- was something refreshing to read. It's a rare experience to read of men talking about their vulnerabilities so candidly and honestly.
What I particularly enjoyed reading were his experiences in the Far East, where he lived and worked with different NGOs to uplift the lives of the children who have been abused. It sheds light on how sex tourism can be so devastating to the local population. Glenn's dedication to his work speaks volumes of the kind of man he is, and whose belief in God drives him to work more to stop child trafficking and abuse.
It takes courage to come out as a gay man, which the writer did in his 60s. The writer also talks about his own experiences of being abused bullied, and silenced, which created frustration. He allows us to get into his mind to experience what it was like for him.
It is his raw honesty and vulnerability that shines throughout the book, and I was led on a whirlwind of an adventure from the Uk to South East Asia to the Far East to the US and finally back to the UK. He has shown that there is no shame and that it's possible to come out of that shame and live a meaningful life after abuse. I enjoyed the little reflections the writer shared at the end of each chapter. I also appreciated the QR code/ link of different articles and sites which he talks about in the chapter.
There are 95 chapters, and they are short chapters, so don't let that number put you off. Each chapter has something important to say. (He's jumped out of a plane, fallen down a hole, survived a knife attack, hiked on a glacier in Norway, got his PhD and so much more!)
I have recommended this book to several men in my own circle who can find support in Glenn's journey.

4.0 out of 5 stars Honest but encouraging. Realistic and relevant to all.
Dr Glenn Miles describes, in bite-sized chapters, his many and varied life-events.
There were some storms he avoided (just) and thus survived, others which met him head-on and yet he has survived. Some were by any definition traumatic, others more light-hearted. Each survival is described briefly, but with complete honesty.
Everybody will find here echoes of their own life. Glenn uses each main chapter to describe his experience and then offers a reflection for the reader to consider, as well as further resources for anyone facing a similar situation.
Through it all, and despite everything, Glenn recognises God’s embrace and protection. It will encourage me to do the same and – as Glenn hopes – embody to others that same embrace and protection.
