C’est cela l’amour, et tu es mon rêve...
Bryce:
Hockey is my life. This game pulled me from my tiny Quebec hometown all the way to the NHL, and now? I’m the number one player in the league. Team capitane for the Montréal Étoiles. I’m shattering records and packing arenas every night, and I’ve promised my team: we’re going to win the Stanley Cup this year.
But I’m keeping big secrets. I'm thinking dangerous thoughts, and dreaming about impossible things. Like how a man’s lips might taste, or how his body might feel in my arms.
I can’t go there. I’ve got to focus. Team. Hockey. Cup. What my heart wants doesn’t matter.
So why am I falling head over heels at the NHL's All-Star Weekend?
I can’t do this. I can’t fall for Hunter Lacey. He’s a hockey player. We’re both in the NHL. He’s on a different team. And, oh yeah, he’s straight.
Hunter:
I’m a middle-of-the-road, nothing-special hockey player. Good enough to be drafted into the NHL, and I’ve been on the roster for the past two years, but I’ll never make the Hall of Fame. I’m just trying to keep my head up and get through each day, until this wild ride comes to an end.
Deep thinking isn’t really my thing. Look inside myself? Lotta beer and burgers there.
I never thought I’d be invited to the All-Star Weekend, but here I am. And there’s my hero: Bryce Michel, league superstar.
Saying hello to Bryce turns into hours spent together on the ice, and then an invite to dinner, and then days at each other's side. I’m in heaven. He’s my hero, and this is the coolest—
Then Bryce’s lips land on mine, and the world turns upside down.

MM Hockey Romance
Plot: At twenty-four, Bryce Michel is already a legend in the NHL. Drafted somewhere in the middle of the pack and completely unexceptional, he exploded out of the gates during his rookie season and practically slingshotted to glory. This year, his team, the Montreal Etoiles, have their sights set on the Stanley Cup. And there’s nowhere else Bryce would rather be. More than teammates, the Etoiles are like brothers. Family. They are stronger together, always pushing each other to be better.
But Bryce has a secret, an impossible dream that threatens to derail everything. He’s starting to realize he’s not like the other guys on his team. He feels lost. Empty. And terribly alone.
Hunter Lacey is a decent defender playing for a terrible hockey team. Unlike Bryce, he knows his time in the big leagues is probably limited, so he’s determined to enjoy the ride for as long as it lasts. He’s surprised when he gets invited to Vegas for the NHL’s annual All-Star Weekend, and totally thrilled. He’s not expecting any miracles, but there’s a real chance he might get to meet his longtime hero, the reason he’s playing the game in the first place, Canadian superstar Bryce Michel.
When Bryce and Hunter finally do meet on the ice, it’s like they’ve always known each other. Hunter is psyched to hang out with his idol, and Bryce feels the icy bands around his heart begin to loosen up. The All Star Weekend is magical, and both men play hockey like never before, as if they were always meant to skate together. But there’s a problem: in real life, they play on separate teams, and any chemistry they find together is likely to fade away once the weekend is over. Yet both men know deep down this thing between them is the start of something great, if only they could find a way to hold onto it.
First Take: Reading this book made me feel alive. The stakes are high, the tension even higher, and the reward was worth it all. This is a gut-wrenching, achingly sweet tale of two unlikely soul mates. Hockey is punishingly brutal, and so was this book on my emotions. But dang, the lows make the joyful parts that much sweeter. I laughed, I cried, I loved. As always, Tal Bauer does an amazing job of combining seminal sports moments with tender words and touches and dang if I’m not turning into a sputtering, weepy old woman. And there’s no one I’d rather be.
Characters: Bryce Michel is disciplined, dedicated, and into hockey for more than just himself. To him, hockey is about brotherhood, and the only way to win is to work together. He is an expert play-reader with a quick mind and an eye for the opponents’ weaknesses. He would give anything for his friends, including sacrificing a piece of himself. Hunter Lacey is tough as nails. He loves hockey and is determined to enjoy the moment, since nothing is guaranteed in the life of professional athletes. He is kind and fiercely loyal and young– he knows he has some growing up to do. The best secondary character in this story is the central hockey team, the Montreal Etoiles, made up of a group of surprisingly open-minded, loving and generous men. It was really great to get to know them.
Praises: Tal Bauer is a master at making a reader feel good. His stories are so heartwarming and sweet and even though his characters often go through some extremely difficult times, you know it’s always going to work out in the end, which is basically my eternal hope for this life. It is so easy to connect with Bryce and Hunter as they navigate their fears and their feelings, and what do we read for if not to find emotional connection? The best books leave you thinking and dreaming about them long after it’s over, and I’m already looking forward to reading this one again.
Critiques: There are a lot of French phrases in the text that require translation, which might annoy some readers.
Themes: Coming of Age, Family, Faith v Doubt, Identity, Loneliness, Man v Self, Survival
Overall Tone: Earnest, raw, and full of yearning, this is a story about figuring out the “why” of life.
Prose: Dual POV. One of my favorite parts of this book is that Tal Bauer made sure to include Bryce’s native French in the dialogue. The Kindle app has the built-in ability to translate the text, so it’s easy to understand what he’s saying. Each time it feels a little bit like a treasure hunt, or opening a gift. I try to guess what he’s saying and then translate it, only to find it was even sweeter and more adorable than I imagined.
Steam: 💜💜💜💜/5 Tal Bauer writes killer love scenes. They are always achingly romantic and sweet and somehow just the perfect amount.
Swear Jar: 🤬🤬🤬🤬/5 There is plenty of swearing in French(!), not much in English
Cliffhanger: HEA, no cliffhanger.
Memorable quotes:
My name etched into eternity is a cold comfort. I cannot sleep beside the Stanley Cup. I cannot wrap my arms around it and feel its heartbeat, or feel its breath move through my hair. I may love this sport, and love the chase of the championship, but it will not love me back.
“I think about you all the time. How we were on the ice together. How we were when we were hanging out. You remember when we drove into the desert under the stars…I was so happy that night. Mon Dieu, I almost kissed you then, but I was too terrified.”
Hunter: “I don’t know how I am enough for you, Bryce. That’s what’s wrong here. That’s what’s always been wrong. I’m no one. I’m nothing. How could you fall for me?”
Bryce: “How could I not?”
Is this what falling in love really is? Discovering pieces of yourself inside another person? Finding that half of your heart that lives in another?
Worthy of a reread? Holy Cow, yes!
Stand-Alones, Prequels, Sequels, & Tangents: Though sold as a stand-alone Hockey romance, this book sort of isn't! Tal Bauer has a second book, The Rest of the Story, which takes place in the same universe, featuring different characters on a different team. Hunter & Bryce make an appearance there, so to me, it's basically a series. Read this one first, as it takes place first chronologically.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2025This is my 2nd Tal Bauer Gay Romance Novel, and now one of my all-time favorite 3 books in this genre! What an unbelievable story Tal has constructed here. I knew zero about the game of Hockey, nor do I speak French. This entire story is set very intimately within the constructs of Hockey. And since a fictional Team from Quebec, Canada is the primary framework for this novel, the story is full of French words and phrases. (Do not panic: Tal gives translations into English at the end of every chapter!!)
Upon this book's arrival from amazon, I had my doubts whether I should invest the time to "deal with" the French words, expressions and phrases, plus the reality of Hockey - which again, I knew absolutely nothing about.
It took me just 2x chapters to not only warm up to this story, but get totally involved with the game and especially the several main characters supporting the two primary characters.
The world Tal Bauer has created around a very "manly" - and brutal - sport, and let gay love flourish in it AND be accepted by the team and even the trainer and ultimately the audiences & fans, is very heart warming. I get very emotionally involved in story characters, and this wonderful book was/is no different. I cried many times as I was so overcome with emotion for the events in this outstanding book.
Whether you like Hockey or not - if you like gay romance fiction - then buy this book immediately!! Not only will you find it nearly impossible to put it down at night time............ if you're a fast reader (I am not), then you may finish the 282 pages in one day. I take several days to finish a book of this magnitude.
But Tal Bauer: 20/10 for this phenomenal story you have given us!! I hope you have more similar amazing stories in you brain and up your sleeve!! Thank you! Thankyou ! Thank you!!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2025Although predictable, this was such a sweet story! Loved all the characters, loved the team, author did a fabulous job of describing the hockey play. I really enjoyed Hunter and Bryce's love story. I think this may be only the second MM book I have read that described sex as making love rather than F'ing. In fact, I don't think it was once presented as the latter. Which was so refreshing and sweet. Made me feel like I was actually reading a romance rather than a meat market hook up story. I did keep my google translator handy as I used it a lot! But, that was kind of fun as well. Will definitely read more from this author.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2025This story was breathtaking, beautiful, and utterly addictive. One moment, it shattered my heart into a million pieces, and the next? It put it back together like nothing ever happened (the audacity!!! 💔😂).
I absolutely loved how all the important conversations happened early on. Bryce and Hunter had a bit of a rocky start, but they worked through it fast, and that made their connection feel even more real.
And let me tell you: I ALMOST DIED WITH THE INJURY SCENE 💀 I lost hours of sleep and years off my life. mygod!!!!!
Another thing I really appreciated were the not overly long play-by-play game scenes. The ones included were magnificently written and packed with just the right amount of intensity.
Aaaaand of course... the bilingual aspect! 🏒💬 The way the author seamlessly weaves both French and English into the characters' dialogues and inner thoughts was wonderful. It wasn’t just random phrases for dramatic effect—it was an integral part of their communication, and I LOVED that.
I didn’t want this book to end. 😭 I need more of Bryce & Hunter in my life!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 14, 2025Be sure to read this on kindle so that you can just highlight and translate all of the French snippets throughout the book. Great story with characters that you’ll fall in love with. Loved how much of the story was dedicated to the game!

5.0 out of 5 stars Top Tier Hockey Romance
Finding out that Tal was writing not only another book but that it was going to be a hockey romance made me at once excited and nervous AF! I mean more Tal Bauer books please but also I am so, so incredibly nitpicky when it comes to hockey books. And I never want to find fault in Tal's writing because it brings me so much joy! Nevertheless on release day I devoured Gravity and despite a couple terms I may not use, nor would I hear most Canadian hockey fans/players use, I was absolutely swept away!
The book itself is very respectful of the game which is good since there is a lot of hockey! The ice-time for this book is at first pairing D level! I'm sure some people who went in not knowing the game at all will come out having an ounce of understanding. Another thing done well was how he wrote the Canadian side of things. Between Bryce's relationship to the game and the wilderness around him it felt incredibly authentic. A lot of children in Canada grow up with a similar experience and to see it written about so beautifully was a bit of a gift to Canadian readers!
"...there is no separating the game from its home or its history. The game became Canada’s heartbeat, and the soul of hockey endures on frozen rivers and lakes and ponds."
The characters are some of the sweetest of all time. I loved watching their friendship bloom into more and how they helped one another transition between one world and another. Their chemistry in all areas of their lives was also off the charts in a pretty believable way!
"Hi," I squeak. "I wear your number." "Enchanté." Bryce's grin grows. "I wear your number, too."
I can't say much about the drama because when it comes it's heavy and emotional and ultimately beautiful but I refuse to spoil it for anyone! That being said if you require trigger warnings please see those in the comments because some may find it triggering.
Tal Bauer is an absolute master of swoon. But he brings such heart and depth to his characters and plot that it just elevates the swoon to a whole new level! Whether you're a fan of sports or not, this is a MUST read by TB!

This book melted my heart .. so much emotion , so many beautiful moments ..
I’m going to start by saying , Yes, the French is awful .. I’m French , and can easily say the translation wasn’t good .. but ..honestly I don’t care ..
the romance is almost insta-love, I don’t really like that , but in this book, I couldn’t have it any other way, my heart couldn’t have survived a Bryce with a broken heart any longer.. this guy was the epitome of perfection.. I loved him instantly.. his pain and emotions were beautiful to read.

Low angst, no homophobia, just enough drama to keep you alert and feel in love even more and not even between Hunter and Bryce … I read a lot mixed reviews, so yes , a lot of I love you, a very small bi-awakening.. it’s not a roller coaster , it’s a beautiful love story with a lot of hearts. And sometimes it feels good to read that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing
Tal Bauer, this book deserves all of the stars 😍😍😍 Honestly, the way this man writes romance is on another level. He could make the biggest cynic believe in true love and fate and soulmates is just a few pages. I finished this book almost a day ago and I still don't have adequate words to describe how amazing it was, but I'll try my best.
On the surface, this is a sports romance between Hunter and Bryce. Hunter is invited for the first time to play at the NHL All Stars game where he gets to meet his hero Bryce Michel. When they meet though, it is as if they share one mind and body, with how connected they are with each other on and off the ice. But, one moment changes everything and it's a journey to their HEA.
I felt the full range of emotions reading this. The way Tal writes about love and its importance in life and it's various forms is something that will stay with you for a long time. One of my favourite things about Gravity was how Bryce and Hunter never questioned whether their love for each other was the most important thing. A lot of mm sports romances will have a lot of angst about whether they can be together and still play the sport, but here the couple never even considered that hockey was more important than each other. I also loved how supportive their teammates were.
I think this might be tied with the Jock for my favourite book ever! If you haven't already, do yourself a favour and go read everything ever written by Tal Bauer
