“Choco. Wait, could it be that Choco...?”
Haruhiro and his comrades have become famous due to achievements no one expected from them. With his comrades more confident, Haruhiro is still agonizing over what to do when more experienced volunteer soldiers come to him. Among them is a girl whose name is still in Haruhiro's memories.
At that same time, the town of Alterna moves to retake the Deadhead Watching Keep held by orcs. Looking to earn some of the reward money, Haruhiro's party ends up joining their first raid alongside Renji and Choco.

This volume is continuation of the Anime with the same title. I was started reading the novel because of that. In this volume Haruhiro and his party continue their adventure. The new adventure that keep me reading non stop. The story is not cliche as many of "Other world" story. It has emotion in every part when Haruhiro tried his best to lead his party. Really love this story.

It is such a refreshing change of pace to read an Isekai (trapped in a fantasy world) story that doesnt revilve around a harem. Such great writing and compelling characters. I love this series.

After we lost Monato I thought we were done with the tragedy aspect of this series. But like GRRM, Ao is not afraid to kill characters when it serves the plot and deepens the narrative.

Outstanding series. Really hope funimation and CR get their heads out of their asses and make some more seasons.

The whole Grimgar saga is about an indecisive, self-doubting protagonist who second-guesses himself constantly despite his apparent success. It's a long, sometimes painful journey of gaining self-confidence, and you can tell it's written by an author who is living out a parallel life: Haruhiro-san and Ao Jyumonji are kindred spirits.

As the saga progresses its sometimes tempting for me to complain at how little progress Haruhiro makes in terms of development, and his constant self-deprecation can get annoying (as well as annoying his comrades!), but then I remember that I am much like him, and remind myself that I would be no better in that situation.

I've finished about ten of the books in the series so far, and things seem to be speeding up now. I can hardly wait to see if he finally gets a chance to pursue love...

Things really ram up in intensity during this volume. The party members mainly focused on goblin slaying in the Old city of Damuro in volume 1 and killing kobalds in the Cyrene mines in volume 2 while growing as a party and overcoming the loss of comrades. However, volume 3 takes a dark turn when the party decides to participate in a raid on Deadhead Watching Keep, a stronghold of orcs.

Just as the events and battles that take place are jarring and abrupt, so too is the ending of volume 3. It is only a semi resolution leaving you wanting more. I can't say that this is truly a bad thing. It is endings like this that get me shaking with anticipation and wanting to immediately pick up the next volume in the series.

This book had me on the edge of my seat the whole time, and when it ended, I was screaming for the next book.
The characters we’ve grown to love or love to hate are on full display in all their relatable, flawed human glory, and the danger in which they find themselves this time out is extreme.
Will they win? Will they die? It’s a pulse-pounding journey to the last page, and it’s one you will relish to the last word.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grimgar is merciless
Reviewed in Germany on August 29, 2017
Grimgars light novel proves that its storytelling lies not only within the power of the anime, but within its themes as well. Haruhiro continues to be a hapless everyday man struggling to keep up with contemporary legends who are still too far for him to reach. Ranta continues driving him mad, and they are still hunting goblins, ever too cautious to assume they can go after something dangerous without any issues.

While the team interaction decreases a little in this volume, the battle is brilliant. This is a volume that takes the opportunity to expand the universe, but also ups the game by throwing our normalheroes into a battle of unprecedented scale. I did not want to finish it. It made me exclaim. It made me react, and for that reason alone ill rate it fully.

For all such novels in this genre you can't expect a Shakespearean yarn or the like, but you can expect an honestly great read in a short amount of time. If you've seen the anime and read the first novel, then you can safely expect this to be worth the read entirely.

This book picks up where the anime (season 1) left off. Same great character development and plot with lots of fast-paced fighting action. good translation too. enemies are getting tougher though, prepare for some graphic content. If you liked the anime or the first two books then you need to pick this up!
