The Ground Beneath Our Feet (Giving You ... Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 150 ratings

A STEAMY, STANDALONE, BODY-POSITIVE/CURVY GIRL/ROOMMATES-TO-LOVERS ROMANCE So maybe I’ve been sheltered, but what a way to open up my eyes. Walking in on my new, allegedly “professional,” man-mountain roommate doing the nasty with some woman. Eye bleach. Please. I’ve got enough to worry about with my new job in a new city, and even worse, my new health diagnosis. So maybe my curves have gotten a little out of control. But If I can’t escape my demons with cookies, I’m sure I can learn to cope. I’ve got a plan. Go to work. Come home. Diet fiercely. Exercise religiously. Don’t pay any attention to that tattooed hottie with a bigger-than-life personality. He’s just someone I found online, and I only need him to rent a room to me until I find my own place. After that, I can say goodbye to Dr. Michael Tate, the veterinarian, and his menagerie of animals. And his secret side. Except when you live with someone as magnetic as him, things go a little awry.

This book was nothing but stellar, a whirlwind of emotions and a story which left me in tears. A book so raw, so real, so honest, while never over the top, I can only say it will stay with me for a long time to come.

With Jessica, the heroine, you get a woman who combines utter confidence and complete self-consciousness under one tough, but crumbling exterior.
Mikey, on the other hand, exudes strength, confidence, a larger-than-life personality and is seemingly invulnerable until his darker secrets are revealed.
They both are highly flawed, willful characters, but combined there is a spark that burns, unites, drives apart, that simply brings forth the most in them, the best, the brightest, the ugly, the tearful, the vulnerable; all the deep and heightened emotions.

Going through their story with them oftentimes reduced me to tears, before elating me with their sweetness, their strength, their humour and then brought me back to tears at their struggles, their vulnerability, their pasts shared and overcome.

Leslie's writing draws you in, it doesn't let you leave, or draw back or exclude yourself. You are forced to face the emotions with the exceptionally vivid characters and fight their battles with them, but you are also privy to their love, their funny quirks, all their acomplishments and sexy scenes. Her writing is never over the top, always down-to-earth, yet results in you flying high on a rush of emotions, the good, the bad, all of them, and leaves you full of life, questions and emotions, but mostly a grateful feeling to have been allowed to experience this story and this world.

Lastly, I can only say, this book matters. Yes, it is sexy. Yes, it is damn hot. Yes, it is sweet and yes, it is funny at times. But really, this book is so much more. It's more than just any romance/smut, with hot scenes. It is more than just the usual characters with some flaws who have to overcome pasts. (Though it has all those things, too) No, this one, this one matters. It is important. It is vital. It isn't pretentious or boasting or boisterous . It simply is. Quiet, understated, letting the story speak for itself, which makes it all the better. And it simply is one that matters.

This book is beyond gorgeous! It’s swoony romantic and sexy as hell. It’s intense and touching. It’s honest, and it’s raw.
Jessica stole my heart! Her strength and determination to conquer a behavior pattern that’s been her safety net for years are truly inspirational. Accepting Mikey’s help is a huge step for her. Guys like Mikey don’t look twice at girls like Jessica. But that’s where she’s wrong. Mikey can barely keep his hands off of his beautiful new roommate. On the outside, it may appear he has his life together; he oozes confidence, compassion and sex appeal. But on the inside, there is a darkness that haunts him. Which is why agreeing to help her get her body in shape can lead to nothing more. He may damn well die from “Jessica exposure” in the process, though. She’s everything he never knew he needed; delightfully shy and curious, witty, so much fun. And those luscious curves! I love that Jessica is as much of a life saver for Mikey as he is for her. At the heart of this beautiful story, Ms. McAdam brings to light our tendency to love, accept, and forgive others far easier than we love, accept, and forgive ourselves. Striving for balance, loving yourself and all of your imperfections will open up a new world.
Leslie McAdam is a spectacularly talented writer. The characters she creates, the stories they tell, the way they hand us their hearts... always resonate with me in some way. Each story in the Giving You...series teaches me something new about myself. The best part? Her stories touch my soul with healing hands. They have become my therapy when I need an infusion of self-confidence and a lesson in “stop being ridiculous and mean to yourself”. The Ground Beneath Our Feet will stay with me for a very long time.

“Then come back and see me sometime…” I loved every single reference to Mae West in Leslie McAdam’s book The Ground Beneath Our Feet. Mae West was brash and curvy and sexy. Everything Leslie’s character Jessica wants to be.
Leslie has written a warm and very real world story about a woman struggling with her “earthsuit.” Plain English: Jessica thinks she is too fat. And NO MATTER who we are — insecurity affects all of us. It’s universal... Too thin. Too fat. Too tall. Too short. Yada, yada, yada.
I think Leslie handled the subject beautifully.
“What if these were the last French fries I’d ever eat?” (Jessica wonders as she sits with her friends and observes them enjoying French fries) “If I didn’t have them I’d be missing out. I surveyed the table. No one else had a crisis because of the French fry.”
    Or did they?
We might think we are the sole sufferer, the ONLY one, the oddball. But chances are — the person sitting across from us has their own demons hiding behind their charismatic smile or fancy clothes.
Our suffering (and joy) unites us. And our ability to rise above the struggle strengthens us. And when we have someone in our corner — in this book Jessica meets a man named Mikey who loves Jessica for Jessica, curves and all — we can run the race (quite literally) to the finish, give the demons a middle finger, and smile at our sinfully exquisite Mae West curves.
“When you wear your earthsuit, you have to take care of it. So you feed it. Just eat if you’re hungry. Don’t worry about what I or anyone else thinks.”
    Good advice from Mikey.
    Feed it.
    Love it.
    Own it.
