Overview

Alexandra Watts suffers from a mundane existence. She gave up the pleasures of an aristocratic life for the rush of owning a book shop, but something went awry, and she cannot recall what. Now she wanders the musty aisles of her employers library, bored and feeling lost.

When she discovers a mysterious lady loitering the library with a book she has never read, Watts feels immediately intrigued and strangely awakened. Three things follow in quick succession. Watts is followed by a monster, the mysterious lady appears outside of her apartment, and the window to her flat is left open.

Subsequently, Watts is pulled into a mirage of monsters and Gatekeepers, memories filled with ghostly shadows, and a grove on the edge of England.

About the Author

Rachel C. Neale writes LGBTQ+ riddled high-fantasy and sapphic romance.

Beyond the Grove is her first published novella, involving a grim librarian, Watts, who meets a monster hunting Emmaline James—the last of a long line of Gatekeepers. After Watts volunteers her subconscious for a makeshift experiment, love and danger ensue.

Rachel is passionate about writing emotionally complex female leads who refuse to stop fighting after they get their asses kicked again and again.

As an editor at her freelance business, Third Sister Editing, Rachel is an advocate for queer stories and marginalized voices. She wants to read more mainstream books with queer and lesbian protagonists, especially in the genres of fantasy and science fiction.

When not writing or editing, Rachel can be found scouring thrift stores for vintage, flailing to music, eating chocolate, drinking coffee, and learning how to design book covers.
