The Hedge Wizard 2: A Progression Fantasy Adventure Kindle Edition
Imprinted by the soul of the Wolf Dragon, Hump must master this new power or risk being consumed by it. The soul is a fragile thing, after all, and he fears what part of himself may have been lost...
But with the threat of the Dragon Keeper Trials looming, he must find a way to get stronger. Fast.
In need of further training, Hump and his party seek out a wizard acquaintance of his master. What they find is a town besieged by otherworldly spirits. Locals snatched in the gloom of night, adventurers sent to their aid gone missing, and whispers of a witch luring the creatures to their doorstep.
Hump will need all the newfound strength he can muster if he is to survive and uncover the truth of these spirits.
The price may just be his humanity.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2024I felt as though this offering took the story in unexpected and thoughtful directions. I liked the complexity shown by the characters. They had nuanced motivations and were weak and vulnerable at times and steadfast at others. A great edition to the genre.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2023I enjoyed this story even more than the first book. Alex has a fantastic way of making the complicated and intricate dance of combat and magic easy to follow without losing the nuances. His stories aren’t linear nor simplistic and are extremely compelling reading. The growth in the main character is excellent and I’m hoping that in the next novel he is able to flesh out Lord Robert and Celaine more, their abilities have grown but as characters are in need of some more depth of character. This is not in anyway meant a complaint nor criticism, simply the desire of an invested reader. I couldn’t be happier with the quality of the writing and the exceptional story and intricate mysteries that Alex creates and weaves into this world.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2022The first book was dark. This one was pitch black. I preferred the first book for that reason, I have enough trauma and mental issues in my life, immersing myself in someone else's is a bit too stressful for me to fully enjoy.
So forewarning: This is not a teenage friendly book, nor it is a mental health friendly book. It IS a good book, but it has some very dark parts too it.
Politics were a bit more on scene this time, and I view that as a negative. Alot of people may like it, but it's the opposite of what I'm looking for.
For the reasons above, it receives 4 stars from me.
On a side note, to the author, and every other author who reads this. Not every fantasy book needs to be a Tolkien adventure. Readers don't always want a world ending threat, sometimes we just want a fun and relaxing story.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2025I actually enjoy progression fantasy. When I’m stuck with nothing to read but litrpg I will, but only under duress, it seems so very halfassed. Progressive fantasy is two steps up and this series is near the top.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2024While an odd LitRPG, the book had numerous humorous moments. The descriptions of the fighting and other experiences were clear and exciting, making you feel involved.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2024I read a lot. Part of that means that I read a lot of junk while I wait for the good stuff to come out. This does not fall into that category. If you like tales of wizards this is for you.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2025I read this with whispersync and audible, so my review will include audible stuff.
Too many times, the author repeated himself from one page to the next or even from one sentence to the next. If not repeating himself in the same sentence! Like “the wall was damaged when something hit the wall.” Not a direct quote, but sentences like that are found throughout the book.
The narrator is “fine” I guess, but they don’t have distinct voices for different characters, so I sometimes got confused about who was speaking. This is even worse when I can’t tell if it is the MC talking or a female side character.
All of that having been said, I do enjoy the story and will read the next one. Though I might skip the audiobook for it.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2023It was a pleasure following Hump and his band of adventurers and their growth as people and characters was solid. Looking forward to book 3 !

5.0 out of 5 stars Wizards rule
Excellent read. The Hedge wizard series is a most exciting collection of stories. Can't wait till April and the next book (Hedge wizard 4) is released. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice progression
I truly enjoyed seeing the MC's progression and the fleshing out of the entire supporting cast. This was a gripping read (finished in two days!). The little cliffhanger at the end was perfect. I will definitely pick up book number 3. Moreover, I would encourage anyone to give this series a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars The world gets even darker
The story is progressing nice, the MC makes progress in multiple perspective, his power level of course, but also his world view, his friendships and his perspective about his own goals. He is not longer the small boy at the start from book one but is ready to really take responsibilities.
