3.9 out of 5 stars 16 ratings

Despite its popularity, traditional networking isn’t working. This groundbreaking book flips the classic idea of networking on its head and puts helpfulness at the center of this little-understood practice. Helpful revolutionizes what networking is, how it happens, and how we should do it.

Some people believe that networking is about making the right connections to get a new job or collect social capital.
Helpful reveals that networking is much more than just meeting new people; it’s about freshening and strengthening the connections with the people you already know. Readers will learn to master the ultimate networking question (and how to deal with the world’s worst networking question!), networking strategies for introverts and extraverts, the nuts and bolts of using LinkedIn to build a network, and much more.
Whether you’re a natural at networking or dread it like tax day,
Helpful will forever change the way you practice networking and build relationships, professional and otherwise.

I am a therapist and read this book with hope of learning some suggestions for clients who have lost their job and/or transitioning to new jobs. It provided very helpful information. I found the information on introvert vs extroverts and networking and the section on small talk personally helpful. There are so many suggestions through out the book and in depth info on using LinkedIn. The writing was easy to read and kept my attention. I have already suggested this book to a few clients.

Heather Hollick’s "Helpful" shows all of us how to approach and engage in meaningful ways with important people we don’t yet know.

Networking and connecting with people you don’t know is necessary for successful career changes, moves to new communities or when entering a new life stage. Like most people I dreaded “getting out there” to network until I connected with Heather.

Heather is a seriously talented career and life coach and I highly recommend contacting her for help. You will learn, grow and achieve far more than you can imagine. I received an advance copy of "Helpful" and have used this guide continually since. "Helpful" offers Heather’s expert advice for how to approach and connect professionally, personally and socially.

For example, “What are you working on?” A simple question with the power to transform how you start a conversation and create true engagement with someone you don’t know. I’m always surprised how quickly this question leads to meaningful conversation.

Read this important book and use what speaks to you. Gift it to new grads, friends/family heading for a change and anyone you want to help. And then ask them what they’re working on. They’ll tell you and then thank you.

Whether you feel comfortable with networking or not, this book can help you strengthen your relationships (which are critical to career success). By adopting a new mindset and using the practical tips offered, you are setting yourself up for success.

In my industry (tech), soft skills are becoming more and more important to have. The practical advice in this book will increase your professionalism as you build your network. Get explicit instructions on how to follow up with people after you meet them at an event, how to handle events themselves, what to ask in informational interviews, and much more. The chapter on LinkedIn alone has tremendous value - it gives very explicit instructions on how to get the most out of it.

I hired the author Heather as a business coach a few years ago and much of what I learned from her and used successfully can be found in this book. I've been suggesting this read to mentees and other people when they ask me career questions. Highly recommend to any professional looking to build relationships and lay a foundation for success. My copy is already marked up!

I thoroughly enjoyed Helpful: by Heather Hollick. As someone who doesn’t spend a lot of time reading books, I was happy to find this easy to follow and compelling enough to get through in two sittings. Although offering practical advice for the growth and maintenance of one’s business network seems primary in the book, there is also much practical wisdom to be gleaned about one’s outlook in life and fostering deeper connections with others. One notion that particularly resonated with me was Hollick’s ideal of always assuming that others are / will be happy to be helpful. I generally find it difficult to ask others for assistance, so this idea has significant value for me. I would recommend this book to those interested in simple, yet meaningful, ideas to broaden your social and business networks. For introverts working in the corporate world, this is a must read.

I appreciated this author's understanding that we are not all natural-born networkers, and yet we need to benefit from networks if we are to achieve our goals and life vision. Ms. Hollick gives a great blend of insight, wisdom and super-practical advice that anybody will gain from (even those of you who are great networkers!).

Truly a much-needed reference for connecting and reconnecting with your world. For both personal and professional connectivity, this is a helpful tool for organizing your networking activity. This is the type of book I will want to read again and reference throughout my career. I wish I had this knowledge much earlier in life. "What are you working on?"

This book is a "must-have" in everyone's toolbox as they enter the workforce, begin their careers or who for those who are re-inventing themselves.

Heather Hollick speaks eloquently to those who do not have a network and are unsure of how to build one. The detail that she provides is impressive! And if you are an introvert, you may feel that the first several chapters are talking directly to you. Regardless of whether you are an introvert or extrovert, this book provides a roadmap - with real world examples and practical tips - for creating your own network. This book is a must read for anyone seeking to build and grow connections with others both within and outside organizations. Jim and Dana Robinson
