His Last Lie: A Mystery Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 283 ratings

PUBLISHER'S WEEKLY BOOKLIFE PRIZE: “A shocking ending well worth the wait.”

When Ryan’s dying father gives him a sealed shoebox with instructions to open once he’s passed, Ryan can only speculate on what’s inside. The last thing he expects is for his father to take his own life, or for the shoebox to contain ten thousand dollars cash.

But the money isn’t for Ryan; it’s for someone named Jamie Norton. When Ryan learns Jamie is an old friend of the family with a shady past, he looks to his mother for answers.

But he isn’t the only one looking.

Ryan thought he knew his parents. But the deeper he digs, the more he learns that some families will do whatever it takes to keep their secrets buried.

“I raced to the end and loved it.”Book-A-Holic
“Keeps you guessing until the last page.”Jody’s Bookish Haven
“An amazing twist you will not see coming.”Emma Book Blogger

I step into the kitchen. Nothing is ransacked or looted. The only sound is the plink of the dripping faucet against the dirty dishes in the sink. I move into the living room, listen again, then make my way toward the bedroom.

“Hello?” I call out.

There’s no answer.

I stop just shy of our open bedroom door and peek inside. The bed’s unmade and the comforter’s halfway on the floor, but everything else is as I remember. I go to the dresser. The shoebox and money are still there along with the envelope.

It isn’t like me to be this paranoid, but this damn money has me all turned around in the head. I should just burn it and be done with it, but that would be stupid, and Rachel would never forgive me. In the back of her mind, I know she still thinks there’s a chance we might keep it.

I sit on the bed, already hating myself for what I’m about to do. It takes less than a minute to count the money, but all ten thousand is there—just as I knew it would be. I tell myself I only checked to remove all doubt that someone had been inside our house. That was all. It had nothing to do with the hundred-dollar bill I found inside Rachel’s purse.

Nothing at all.

Hooked me right from the start!
I won a copy of this book from the Goodreads giveaways and wow! Great read that sucked me right in. This is about family secrets and lies and how far people will go to cover them up. I enjoyed this one and look forward to reading more from this author in the future.

I actually almost DNF this one. The banter between Rachel and Ryan got really annoying after awhile. I didn’t like Rachel at first. My thoughts were going a whole different direction on how Rachel was going to go about dealing with the money. But then I realized that they were really comfortable with each other as a couple and their playful snark, inside jokes, dry wit were all indications that this couple were the real thing. I loved how Rachel made the effort to get along with Ryan’s mom and dad even tho they made her feel unwelcome. I loved how Ryan apologized, acknowledged his mistakes and fixed them so the burden wasn’t all on Rachel, I loved how these two discussed just about everything, altho, like I said, it got annoying after a bit.
The other characters were great too. Darryl and Jamie’s development was such a nice surprise. It goes to show not to judge anyone from just the first impression or their outside appearance. The plot was well laid out altho it dragged in the middle.
While the central mystery about the money was solved, there’s still the question about the mother’s and Ryan’s found family.

Whenever I start a book by this author, I always make sure I have plenty of time to read it in one sitting because once I start, it's almost impossible to stop. This book is no exception and you're in for one wild ride with this one. There's something about the way his characters and stories are written that just draw you in and make you want to know what's going to happen next. They're so relatable and make decisions and have doubts and uncertainties that I can imagine making, that it's easy to get caught up in their dilemmas. And woven throughout the book is a sense of dread, knowing that things most probably will get worse, you just don't know how or when.

The new release of a book by this author is always cause for celebration. The only drawback is that you read them so fast that you're done too soon and then want another one already. Definitely give this one a read and then go get all the rest, if you haven't had the pleasure yet.

Excellent suspense novel as well as a study in family relationships. Ryan's dying father gives him a sealed box and admonishes him not to open it until his death. Both his father's death by suicide and the contents of the box come as a surprise. The box's content, ten thousand dollars in cash and a sealed letter, are to be given to a certain Jamie. Ryan's search for Jamie, the motives for his father gift, and the source of the gift, lead Ryan to discover surprising and sinister facts about his family that he never knew. A good read.

I kept waiting for this to get better, but it didn’t happen. Very slow, little suspense. I’d pass on this one.
