His Lordship's Coachman Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 11 ratings

“When all hope seems lost, believe that we will be together one day.”

Darren Turner has been deprived of his childhood home, of the family he has served, and of all his friends. Given to Lord Hampton to serve on his estate, he has no other choice but to travel to his new masters, and serve on their estate as their stable master and coachman. His only relief is that his beloved horse companions travel with him.
Young Lord Archibald Hampton is ready to die. Arriving to his family’s countryside estate where his father hopes he will regain his health, Archibald begrudgingly accepts his father’s proposal of going out on daily rides in the barouche.
As Darren, their new coachman, chooses the most beautiful sceneries to please the young lord, so does Archibald’s reluctance and hostility fade. For both Darren and Archibald hide a secret deep in their heart, only revealed to each other in a moment of despair when Archibald is on the brink of death.
That unexpected love will bring Archibald back from the edge of the abyss, but his sister’s fiancé, Lord William, and Archibald’s own mother will make sure that obstacles are thrown in their paths. And when something terrible happens to Darren, tearing them apart, Archibald has to use all his strength and resilience to find him.

In a world where their love is forbidden on many accounts, will Archibald and Darren find love and peace, against all odds?

Maxime is a queer author who writes about guys falling in love in various places and times. Although the books could be labelled as queer romance laced with erotica, they do not fit a single genre, and are filled with drama, and sometimes darkness. Maxime likes to explore complex emotions, the journey to self-discovery, and living a life true to oneself, and their characters often struggle before finding happiness.

Maxime has an MA in language and literature, and a long international teaching career as teacher of English language and literature. Being multilingual, they also love incorporating various languages in their works.

On top of being an avid reader, Maxime loves horse riding, hiking with their dog and spending time with their family.

This book tells of an impossible love at a time when discovery means death, class difference are like unscalable walls, and dangerous, evil people will do anything to protect their wealth and power.

Darren Turner is a stable master who has just been assigned to a new family, a demotion of circumstances for him. Soon, his meets Lord Archibald Hampton, the only son and heir to the estate. In his teen years he developed an illness that has progressed, now leaving his at death's door. Coughing blood, unable to walk, his only happiness is when he spends a few hours most days touring the countryside with Darren as his driver.

As the two men spend time together, they cautiously begin to share more about themselves and tentatively realize that they share an attraction for each other. Still, Archibald is dangerously ill and progress is made in only the tiniest steps. When Archibald's sister begins to receive a suitor, they realize that Darren is likely the suitor's illegitimate brother. The suitor, pursuing marriage, grows more volatile and threatening by the day in his animosity toward Darren. He also hides a hope that Archibald will succumb to his illness, leaving the man to eventually control his family's estate and this one, as well. There is no limit to what he will do to get his way.

Nothing is glossed over on the hardships of living in this time, especially for poor persons. This book has passion, pain, shifting emotions, hope against the odds, and a beautiful HEA with a divine forever love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tender and at times heartbreaking love story
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 6, 2024
This is such a tender, and at times heartbreaking, love story. A beautiful tale from the pen of Maxime Jaz, whose books I love. From the very beginning, I was wholly drawn into the lives of Darren and Archibald–one a strong and fit coachman, but with no say in his own destiny, the other a member of the powerful upper class, yet weakened by illness, preparing for his own death, and dominated by a selfish and heartless mother. Be ready with the tissue! I confess I cried! I loved the irresistible sweetness of the gentle growth of love between the two main characters, and felt their helpless despair when Archibald’s sister is promised to a cruel, vicious and manipulative man, who will stop at nothing to ruin the two lovers. I won’t give any spoilers, but I absolutely loved the ending (and Archibald’s feisty grandmother).
