About the author

Andy Monk is an independent writer of dark, speculative fiction, a professional daydreamer and inventor of worlds who lives in Suffolk in the UK
His mind, however, is usually to be found in various other fantastical places.
Andy always wanted to be either a writer or a professional footballer. As his fledgling footballing career was hampered by an inability to kick, head, pass or doing anything with the ball other than trip over it and faceplanting in the mud, he eventually decided to plump for the writing.
Though he is still more than capable of tripping up and faceplanting in the mud...
The majority of Andy's books are dark historical fantasies, focussing on vampires and the humans who find themselves drawn into their orbit. This world currently encompasses three separate series and three novellas, In the Absence of Light (primarily set in London between 1679 and 1737) is Andy's first published work. All works branded as In the Company of Shadows - currently Rumville (set in London in 1710) and The Night's Road (set in the Holy Roman Empire between1630-1631), and the novellas Precious Things (1837), The Burning and A House of the Dead (both 1630) - are all subsequent works, featuring both new and returning characters in the same universe.
Outside of his vampire universe, Andy has published the Hawker's Drift series, a fantasy saga chronicling the inhabitants of a remote town in the old American west and their interactions with the town's mayor, who may, or may not, be the Devil. Plus the standalone fantasy novels The Sorrowsmith and The House of Shells, which, while not forming a series, are both set in the same universe.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseOnce again I find myself finishing one of Andy's book with a smile on my face (sort of). His plots do not run the straight path of most books. Just when you think you have the plot figured out he throws another twist at you. He gives his main character Jack lots of personality and I found I was often smiling, chuckling and giggling at some of the things he would do, say or think. Much like the Giggle Finch. You want to despise Jack for cheating on his wife, but you end up feeling for him, and rooting for him as you follow him closely. Watching as he struggles to find out what happened to Moira, escaping of the Burrow Thingies and why he couldn't seem to leave the House of Shells. I think that even though he kept Moira's character under-developed till then end, that was what was part of the charm of the story. I have read all but one of Andy's books and would highly recommend any of them to readers. In fact I have bought "Paths of the World" and it is in cue to be read, so once read I will actually have read all of his books. I liken him to greats like Alfred Hitchcock, writing intriguing and thoughtful stories that keep you guessing and saying "Oh?" when the plot is revealed. And in reference to the "sort of" smiling at the end. . .that was 'after' a few tears, because in the end I really did like Jack.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2018Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseQuick interesting read. I'm glad I purchased the book. I like a read that keeps me guessing this one didn't disappoint . A little strange but that was another thing I liked about the book.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis book did keep me interested although I thought there could have been more explanation of the other dimension that the main character ended up in. It wasn't very suspenseful but it did keep me interested enough to read to the end.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2016Format: PaperbackI liked this story. I really did. It's filled with suspense, and we feel for Jack, but I think it dragged on too long. A couple of things he did were kind of s***ty, but it does make a believable character. Moira, however, isn't developed. I suppose it is to keep her mystery, but it was a letdown. After all of the thing that he goes through, the end is anticlimactic and quick.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWow! That's all you need to know. Just wow!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2016Format: KindleThis book grabbed my attention & held it to the end. Definitely an unusual story line. I wish the author had gone deeper into Moira's character and her disappearance really needed to be explained more. Really has a creep factor, but no gore or violence. I enjoyed this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI would like to give this book five stars because it really is a great story from beginning to end. However, the editing and proofreading are so terrible that I cannot.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Romance?
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA beautiful story that appears, initially, to be a horror. But, then becomes a story of love. With a......
I'll not hint at the end.....

4.0 out of 5 stars Short but sweet!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA strange tale really, where an unhappy middle aged man meets a stunningly attractive young woman. Opposites attract as the saying goes. Once he enters her world everything changes and once he accepts her lifestyle happiness is assured. A love story of sorts but against a backdrop of mysticism and earth magic. Not my usual tipple but, nonetheless, enjoyable.

4.0 out of 5 stars A short story with a strong message.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is not a long story, it is a flash into another world and a reflection of the one we all haunt to some degree.
A brief glimpse of elsewhere.
