How to be a Chief People Officer: Enabling people in the evolving world of work Paperback – June 4, 2023
Purchase options and add-ons
The CPO role has finally taken its rightful place on the Executive Committee and people management is recognised as a true differentiator of success for modern organisations.
However, CPOs face a challenge. In a world of increasing regulation and litigation, and with greater expectations than ever of how organisations should support their people, the role risks being overwhelmed. Managers are drowning under the weight of people-related tasks, while staff demand ever more from their workplace. CEOs and Boards need everything done yesterday. Facing these pressures, people work, ironically, risks being de-humanised.
It’s time to bring humanity back to the workplace. It’s time to empower our managers and leaders, lighten the load, harness technology and bring back some agility and joy to this complex role.
Using a tried and tested framework, this book de-constructs the CPO role. It links people management to four core areas of Culture, Strategy, Execution and Sustainability. It guides the reader through seven stages of the end-to-end employee lifecycle. It breaks down seven HR Centres of Excellence. Moreover, it looks to the future of people management and how we can evolve from here.
This engaging, comprehensive book condenses 50 collective years of experience of working in and around people into a solid framework for the new or aspiring CPO. It is also a solid reference for Boards, Committees and all leaders who want to get the best from their people and position their organisations for success.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2023First, put this on your must-read list if you aspire to be a CPO. It is a practitioner's handbook for you. And if you are a new CEO wanting to know how to get the best out of the CPO role or who to hire in that role, I recommend reading this book.
It provided a realistic view of the breadth and depth of the CPO role. No matter what the size of your company, or the circumstances of your company, this book will have something for you. I love that each chapter has a "What are we solving for" and "Questions for a new CPO." Great checklist of sorts. ✔️📋
The HR landscape has changed tremendously over the last several years, particularly post Covid-19. The CPO role is front and center in all organizations trying to survive or thrive. This book serves as a guiding light for navigating the complexities of this role with confidence and impact. Anne and Jennifer have 50 years of HR experience, and it comes through in the insights and actionable advice they have provided. I highly recommend "How to Be a Chief People Officer" to anyone seeking to elevate their HR leadership journey and contribute meaningfully to organizational success. Keep this book handy; refer to it often!
Final Thoughts: As an experienced CHRO, for me, what sets apart exceptional HR leaders from the rest are four things:
a. Credibility up and down the organization.
b. Influence up and down the organization.
c. Execution of what matters most.
d. Courage
If you ask yourself the questions the authors have provided at the end of each chapter as you set your HR agenda, you will be well on setting yourself apart.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2023My business degree is Organizational Leadership and Development, so many of the points made in this book reminded me of the rich learning I received before. But there’s so much more! I liked that it was easy to understand but very meaty in content. As a business owner, it made me re-think the role of HR and how a CPO is more of what I want to help mold the culture of my organization. The author clearly knows what she’s talking about and did depths of research that we can all benefit from!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2023I love how methodical the book is organized to explain how to be a CPO. It takes you through stages/steps needed to suceed, a clear path to win together as a company and as teams of teams. Read it and you won't regret it!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2023I've been in the HR world for close to 20 years and really liked the breakdown of topics to help me reassess my org and team. In the US some of the terms differ, but the practical aspects were very reader friendly (for new CPO roles or as a refresher).
Highly recommended the other books by author as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide for aspiring, new or experienced CPO's
Part of my role now is taking on fractional CPO assignments and also exploring FT CPO roles. Whilst I did some scouting around on google, and managed to find a model created by Gartner, I could not find a ready reckoner, one I can have on my desk at all time to dip in and out of. And I came across the CPO book by Anne and Jennifer on LinkedIn. I first got the kindle version and soon after got myself a hard copy. I am an experienced people, culture and change leader and from that perspective, I've found the book extremely useful. Thanks Anne and Jennifer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical, thoughtful and valuable
Having a solid HR background but having been ‘out’ of the discipline for a while, this has been a valuable book set up in a tactical and logical way that allowed me to dive into concepts I’m not as familiar with or that needed brushing up. The writing style is conversational yet professional, and I appreciate that language lands cross culturally. Thanks for putting this book into the series and sharing such valuable frameworks!

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly helpful!!!!
I was recommended this book just as I stepped into my first head of people role, and it's been an absolute godsend! I don't come from a HR background and don't actually know a huge amount about the role, so being able to get this top down view of what being a CPO entails has been so helpful.
I have referenced this book so many times, and it is a constant source of inspiration when I'm feeling a bit stuck in my role.
