How to be a Chief Risk Officer: A handbook for the modern CRO (How to be a...) Kindle Edition
The CRO role is complex. It requires a grounding in all of the functions of an organisation, from product management to technology to sustainability. Over the past 20 years, since the emergence of operational risk as a standalone discipline, a large volume of often scholarly material has been written on the topic. However, it is hard to find accessible, clear, practical material that an aspiring CRO can immediately put into action.
This book de-mystifies the CRO role and breaks it into its constituent parts; the three fundamental pillars of Culture, Strategy and Execution, and six risk areas, comprising strategic, people, technology, financial, operational and sustainability. It advises on how to build out a risk framework, what skills are needed to build the risk team, and how to use risk information systems.
Drawing on current standards and enriched with expert insight and real-life current examples, it condenses a vast range of knowledge and experience into one accessible read. This book, which can be consumed all at once, or used as a reference, will equip you with the grounding required to be an effective CRO or risk manager. Relevant, practical and authoritative, this is the CRO book that your CEO, Board and team need you to read.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2024Very informative, easy to digest and it focused on the key aspects for current and aspiring risk professionals. As someone who has been in risk management for over 10 yrs now, I found it to be a reinforcement of things I've previously learned, but also educational as there were some new perspectives introduced as well. It has infused me with a renewed sense of creativity on ways to approach to my role in order to be even more effective.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 14, 2024Nice starter book about the importantance of the job.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2023The author knows what she's talking about. Very helpful to anybody in that field.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2022How To Be A Chief Risk Officer is the primer that every new or aspiring Chief Risk Officer needs in order to understand and grow into the many facets of the job.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2023This is a role that is sometimes misunderstood..some think it involves pointing out what is wrong but there is a statement near end of book where the author points out that cro is a business partner who gives path ways of how a venture can be achieved by say mitigating against certain risks..He or she will determine if venture fits risk appetite of institution.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2022Although I do not work in the risk department, I work with these individuals on many projects. I happen to be in the third category of the authors target audience, in that I would rather do a better more complete job with risk in mind to limit future headaches. The book covers so much in a profession that is really still up and coming. I loved the change in thought that the author suggested, which makes risk analysis more exciting and less of a drag - it’s not “we can’t”, it’s “we can if…”. Great read that I can apply to my current role immediately.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for more than just Risk professionals
A refreshingly pragmatic and reader friendly approach and a welcome departure from what is typically an overly academic field of writing

5.0 out of 5 stars An invaluable handbook for experienced, new and aspiring CROs alike
This is the book I wish existed before I became a Chief Risk Officer.
I came across Jennifer Geary's book on my LinkedIn feed recently so thought I would check it out and ordered a copy.
It's highly topical to modern challenges and well structured, with very practical insights.
I found it just as relevant for an experienced CRO as it would be for someone aspiring to the role or stepping into the role for the first time, and I'm sure I will be referring back to it.
Thanks for writing this Jennifer!

The book is full of references to industry standards and best practices.
A refreshing approach and presentation, compared to to other CRO books.
