How We Hated: A Small Town, Enemies-to-Lovers Romance (Leighton River) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 142 ratings

Anyone who thinks star-crossed love is romantic has never actually experienced it.

Natalie

I know two things about Dalton Wick.

First, he’s
unreasonably hot. And … my father would disown me if I ever got involved with him.

The hatred between our families runs deep. We’re still suffering from what his father did to our small town
decades ago.

So, I’ll work with Dalton on our school project because my grade depends on it. But I will
not fall for him.

Or so I think …

Dalton

I know two things about Natalie Spencer.

First, she hates my family, specifically my dad—almost as much as I do. And … I want her so much that it hurts.

But her being with me would ruin her relationship with her father. So, I should walk away. Everything would be
much easier if I did. Logically, I know that.

Too bad my heart doesn’t seem interested in
logic where Natalie is concerned …

How We Hated, book 1 in the Leighton River series, is a standalone, enemies-to-lovers, new adult, sports romance with plenty of emotional and angsty moments and some spicy times. Download it today and get ready to fall for Natalie and Dalton.

Rating 4.5⭐️Spice 1🌶YA RomanceI don't normally read YA books, but this one drew me in, and I couldn't put it down. First I loved the Town they live in Leighton River. Country, with beautiful scenery describe by the author. She didn't leave the details of this town out. You could imagine you were there, and I appreciate books like that. This book gave me loose vibes if Romeo and Juliet. Dalton and Natalie's family hate each other. Specifically, their fathers. Something happened between Dalton's fathers company and Natalie's family land. Didn't really go into specifics of it, but gave hints. I hope it will be more touched on throughout this series. Natalie hates Dalton father just as much as Dalton does. They both can't stand each other because of this family feud. They were made lab partners their senior year of high school. Even though they tried to get out of it, the teacher wouldn't let them. Compared it to real life co-workers that you don't like. You still can't get out of working with them. The me they work together, the closer they become. Even though their fathers flat out don't want them getting close, it happens. Dalton is the football star of the high school with scholarships to Stanford. He is expected to go there because his family did. He is to take over the company. It's a lot of pressure for a teenage boy, and isn't exactly what he wants. Natalie is the cowgirl of the town. She loves her horse, Brandy. It's her best friend. She helps her family out on their land, taking care of the farm animals. The author brought me back to my high school years. The love and hate of people. The pressures of making good grades and doing things that we don't want to do sometimes. The football games and hanging out with friends. The new love of your life. The attraction and feelings that come along with it. Going from someone, you couldn't stand to having a crush and falling in love for the first time. I felt all of these while reading this book. I'm happy I read this book and can't wait for the next one to come out.Tropes- Enemies to Lovers- Small Town- Football/Cowgirl- Families are Enemies- Forced Proximity- Romeo & Juliet Vibes

Ok...I was seriously on the fence with this read. But I ended up enjoying it. I was pleasantly surprised. The part I was on the fence about, was that this was solely based in high school. The meaning in this book was way more. It's all about seeing the unknown, looking past the obvious and taking a chance.

Dalton and Natalie really hated each other. And they made it known. I've read several books where the H and h "hated" each other. This is the first where they actually did. And they did very petty things to each other. Natalie pulled Dalton's truck in the marsh. Dalton lied on his paper for class about a bottle of water for Natalie. I was so angry with them. But I know now, where the book was headed. And it was extremely important. This book was so much more than I thought. That makes me happy. I couldn't say enough about this read. I actually liked it.

Natalie was teaching Dalton an important lesson, and I actually cried because he missed it. It wasn't just about fixing the fence. Natalie taught Dalton about life. And what the consequences are when you mess with the inevitable. I liked Natalie. Her view on life was true and it had meaning. She had to grow up fast. She needed to be a part of the farm. I did not like Dalton at first. But he grew on me. I loved that he grew as a character. He went from a entitled jerk, full of himself...to a guy who showed emotion and actually had remorse. He wanted to do what was right. He did what was needed. And for that I give him props. I liked Dalton and Natalie. They couldn't have been more oil and vinegar. But at the end... they came peanut butter and chocolate!

Side note- Dalton wrote his number on Natalie!! That made it ALL worth it!!!

I really liked the characters and storyline of this book. The family battles as past hurts fuel to the story and keep you sucked into the story. Really a good book and definitely will be continuing to the next book in the series.

Honestly this book just wasn’t marketed correctly. The sign up said NA but this was definitely YA, set in high school. I’m well past enjoying books set in high school, with silly drama and waaaaay too many musical references.

This had good bones and if it were set in college with older characters I would have enjoyed it more. I just felt blindsided because it wasn’t labeled as it should have been and nowhere in the synopsis does it say this is a YA high school romance.

Dalton and Natalie's families are mortal enemies since way before they were born. Dalton's dad did terrible things to Natalie's family. They grew up as enemies and their senior year were made to be partners by a teacher. They fought it but eventually fell in love. Now to convince her parents that he wasn't like his father. Great story. Have loved every book that I've read by this author.

Lovely & Romantic. This book gives you those early love feels. Dalton and Natalie has no chance to stay away from one another. Life had other plans. The tension between these two is amazing, the secret interactions are just 🫠. Lauren loaded this book with so many great tropes she provided us with Small Town Romance,  Enemies to Lovers, Rival Families, Forced Proximity, Secret Relationship. Overall my favorite thing is Dalton and Natalie realizing  what they have was worth more than what others wanted. The banter between these two had me laughing out loud and rereading some of those jabs. Modern day Romeo and Juliet.

Wow! I didn’t know how I’d feel about a YA book but this blew away all my expectations. It was emotional and witty and filled with the best kind of angsty drama. I even found myself laughing at some of the antics.

Dalton Wick grew up as one of the elites in Leighton River. He’s popular and a star football player. As part of the TimeLand crew, Dalton grew up with everything money could buy except for love. He also grew up knowing the Spencer family hated his family but never bothered to learn why. And as such he has avoided all things Spencer. That is until he is paired with the very spirited Natalie Spencer for an unavoidable school project which entails getting to know one another beyond surface level.

Natalie Spencer is a firecracker. Her family has hated the TimeLand families, especially the Wicks, since before she was born. The Wicks have nearly destroyed her family farm and there is no forgiving them. She is hostile and unforgiving and makes it incredibly difficult for Dalton to complete the assignment. Their early antics of one upmanship are deliciously entertaining and it made for quite the page turner. But as Dalton learns more about Natalie and the secrets his father has kept, their hostility turns to a secret friendship then to love.

This book was such a fun read. I found it difficult to put down. It had all the great makings of a true enemies to lovers. And such a great lesson on not making assumptions about others. Both Dalton and Natalie had to learn that. I’m looking forward to the other books in this series as we got a small taste of their lives in this book.

This was an enjoyable read. I think this series has a ton of potential. I am looking forward to book 2. Not sure I would consider this NA. It was more YA in my opinion. Dalton and Natalie’s story held my attention & I did find myself anticipating what would happen next. It had its emotional parts. I really felt Natalie’s internal struggle with what she perceived to be a betrayal to her family. What it did lack for me was the angst it promised. It just didn’t twist my gut the way I hoped it would. I see the groundwork being laid for the followups to this and I hope the characters I want get their own stories.
