I have enjoyed Savannah Gilbo's insights on storytelling for a few years now, and am familiar with the Story Grid method. As both a fan of the writing craft and the Harry Potter stories, I was eager to read her Study Guide on the first book in the Harry Potter series. I love pulling back the curtain to learn how my favorite stories and scenes are created. This book does just that, and it is fascinating to see. If you, like me, enjoy a behind the scenes glimpse of how tales are brought to life, or need a unique gift for the writer or Harry Potter fan in your life, this fits the bill.

Brief Synopsis: For aspiring authors and fans of the series alike, this guide offers a comprehensive look at the narrative structure and storytelling techniques that make Harry's first year at Hogwarts an unforgettable and enduring classic.

You don't have to be into Story Grid to get a lot from the scene analysis techniques in this book. I like Savannah's way of describing the Story Grid concepts better than anyone's. The bulk of the book is devoted to a scene-by-scene analysis, and I can almost feel people getting impatient with doing the same thing over and over, but it's practice. You get to see the concepts applied to each scene of a familiar work, encountering slightly different questions of how to apply it in each, giving you (or me, at least) a better understanding than one can get from just a couple examples. Definitely gave me a lot to think about in terms of the elements of a scene.

I bought a digital copy and ended up receiving a physical autographed copy as well from Savannah thanks to a give away. So I've been taking double the notes!
I've always used Harry Potter as an example when learning new outlining methods and other aspects of story crafting because it's so easily accessible. Even when I was learning "Save the Cat" I immediately needed to know, "What does that look like with Harry Potter? Where do the pieces of the story fall?"
So I knew I had to have this book as soon as I heard about it on Savannah's podcast.
This book along with the digital resources available with it have already moved my writing along tremendously. I have learned so much in such a short time, I'm almost scared how well my story is coming to life.

Highly recommend this to any writer, but especially if you find the Harry Potter series easy to work with as an example. It just makes s e n s e.

This guide is an absolute game-changer for writers. Whether you're struggling to grasp story structure or simply can't pinpoint what makes a novel truly captivating, this book provides invaluable insights.

The standout feature is the in-depth scene-by-scene breakdown of a complete novel. It's one thing to learn about storytelling components; it's another to witness them in action from start to finish. This practical approach is a masterclass in understanding and applying story structure to your writing. It's also an exceptional tool for honing your critical analysis skills.

5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable and essential writer's tool!
Reviewed in Australia on August 1, 2024
This is a must have tool for writers looking to understand story structure or for those who can’t explain why this story is so compelling and want to know the ingredients that made it so.

The absolute goldmine of this guide is the scene by scene breakdown and storytelling analysis for the entire book. It’s one thing to be told the components of a scene, but to actually see it in action for a novel beginning to end is where you truly learn and understand how to do this for your own writing, as well as how to critically analyse other stories. This alone makes it an invaluable and essential tool for writers learning story structure and applying the practice to their own WIP.

I have already learned so much and can’t recommend this enough - I am impatiently waiting for masterwork guides of the entire series.

When I first read Harry Potter, I did it for pleasure. But if you are a writer, this guide can help you navigate the ins and outs of piecing a novel together. Savannah spills the secrets of World Building, Character Development, Plots and Scene Structure so that if you’re in need of a short-cut as to why your novel is (or is not) working, this guide could be your answer. Although I got an advanced copy, I still bought the book. Great insights!
