Hunter's Oath (Changeling Blood Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 1,902 ratings

From one Court, two are born…
as a new Lord is crowned in glory
But a murderer risks all their secrets…
bringing shadows that could burn everything down

Jason Kilkenny is a quarter-human Vassal of the Queen of the Fae and the neutral arbiter of supernatural affairs around the Fae Court in the Canadian city of Calgary. He has spent half a year building relationships with the existing power structure—but all of that is thrown into chaos when the Fae leadership dictates that Calgary’s Court split into Seelie and Unseelie factions. Backed by the highest authority, the new Lord Andrell is there to build an Unseelie Court from nothing, and he will brook no interference, no challenges.

Meanwhile, a rogue Fae launches a vicious slaughter at Calgary’s largest public event, and Jason is dragged into an investigation and pursuit of a monster far more powerful than he is. The rogue’s Unseelie heritage brings him into conflict with Lord Andrell, and the city’s peace is threatened.

One wrong step could unleash civil war between the new Courts and Jason’s own secrets could lead to lighting the embers of a civil war amongst all Fae—embers that have slumbered since before his birth.

If only he knew what those secrets were…

Hunter’s Oath is the second book in Glynn Stewart’s Changling Blood series. It is even better than the first. Jason Kilkenny, Vassal of the Queen of the Fae, is settling into his role as neutral arbiter of justice in the supernatural community of Calgary, until the balance of power is thrown askew when the Fae ruling council decrees that there should be two courts, Seeli and Unseelie, in this town. Control of the Calgary Court means de facto control of the Fae’s portion of heartstone production, a vital ingredient in the production of magical weapons that causes Calgary to have disproportionate power in the supernatural world. A rogue Unseelie creature wreaks havoc, leaving a trail of savaged corpses that threatens to expose the hidden world of magic. As Kilkenny attempts to bring the creature to justice, while not triggering a civil war, he is stymied at every turn. Upheaval in the supernatural community is not all he must deal with, however, for Jason Kilkenny also finds his personal powers are growing and new gifts emerging, gifts that come from the father he never knew. By the end of the book, he solves the mystery of his parentage and uncovers a plot that threatens the very existence of the Fae community as it has existed for centuries.

In Hunter’s Oath Glynn Stewart does what he is best at - he takes well known and loved conventions - in this case European folk stories - and deftly weaves them into contemporary stories of mystery and suspense all occurring against the background of a hero’s journey. It is is a journey well worth sharing. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Hunter's Oath continued a very entertaining series. However, I felt it was weaker than book one. I've got two big complaints about it. First it Jason's girlfriend. She's presented as a strong female character, but she only shows up when Jason needs her help. She's feeling less like a true girlfriend and more like a token strong female/magic lamp. The second complaint is that the overarching series plot advanced too fast in this book. The overarching plot elements really should have been split out between this book and the next.

Aside from those two complaints, which in the end didn't really detract from my enjoyment of the series, I still very much enjoyed the book and would recommend it to anyone that enjoyed the first book.

Hunter's Oath by Glynn Stewart is the second book in the Changeling Blood series. I thought the first book Changeling's Fealty was amazing, and Hunter's Oath was a great follow-up. I cannot wait for the third book in this series to come out. Hunter's Oath starts off basically where the first book ended, so if you have not read the first book, you should read that one first. In this book we continue to follow Jason's life as he learns more about being a Vassal and the problems that come with being a Vassal. I feel this book had plenty of action, drama, and some questions finally get answered. In this book, we also get some more world-building and we learn more about the Fae and the Courts. My only wish about this books is that I wish it was longer! I was reading this book quickly because I needed to know what happened next, but I also did not want the book to be over. If you like shifters, Fae, magic, action, heroes, and more then this book is for you. I highly recommend this book, and any other books that Glynn Stewart has written. You will not be disappointed!!

I've only been reading Glynn Stewart for a few years and this is the first non-Sci-Fi book that I have read... & obviously I loved it!
I highly recommend this fantasy series. It has an interesting insight into old-fashioned faery tales. I'm a long-time AD&D player & DM/GM & some of the faery characters I recognize from the various monster manuals. I appreciate having a unique insight into a genre that sometimes gets mired in derivative writing. Glynn Stewart is definitely not derivative!
And, if you like this series I highly recommend his Sci-Fi series.

At the end of this book there is a one-page about the author's unstoppable writing habit and how his writing liberated him from working as an accountant (probably why his harder sci-fi stuff is so good). Anyway, his writing has liberated me from a life of reading only books Glynn Stewart didn't write.
It wasn't unbearable, until I knew what I was missing.
You will want to go back and read Changlings Blood 1, which I found to be truly emotionally powerful and a good read. This book carries the story forward and like so many of Glynn Stewart's books the politics start getting ugly. Somehow after surviving the twists and turns of fate and some rather nasty creatures with even worse powers you end up feeling like you are better for having read a wonderfully captivating story that brought you through all of life's emotions to leave you hopeful at the end.

A nice second book for the series. Good character development for the protagonist if a little bit predictable. I tend to like protagonists that are less compliant and more complex, but the large cast of characters keeps this story moving. I will definitely pick up book 3 as this book was sufficiently engaging.

I am a huge fan of Glynn Stewart and make no bones about it. I was originally a "Starship's Mage" fan but have quickly fallen in love with the "Changeling Blood" series. Excellent use of voice, great characters, engaging story and a world that leaves me breathlessly wanting more.

After how much I enjoyed "Changeling's Fealty" I bought this book immediately even though it has a Kindle Unlimited option. I have no regrets. Amazing entry in what is shaping up to be a wonderful series.

If you enjoy Jim Butcher, Patrica Briggs or Brandon Sanderson, then read Glynn Stewart, you will not be disappointed.

@Glynn Stewart: Thank you for being an amazing and prolific author. Please keep this wonderful series going.

4.0 out of 5 stars Une histoire bien menée
Reviewed in France on June 3, 2018
