A Drop of Pretty Poison: A Brother's Best Friend Romance (Pretty Poison Trilogy Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 4,045 ratings

They say that when a love burns too bright, it’s bound to burn out—especially those wrapped in secrets and doused in lies.

After a risk is taken and a confession is made, one relationship heats up while another hangs in the balance. When everything rests on shaky ground, we find the stability we need tangled up in each other. Guards are let down and trust is repaired, but all vulnerability comes with a side of weakness. And the betrayal that hits us is one we never saw coming.

Revenge is a dangerous game, especially when fueled by jealousy. We’ll do whatever it takes to protect our own, even if it means seeking help from unlikely sources. While every favor comes at a price, choices made in distress have a tendency to backfire.

As our world comes crashing down around us, loyalties are put to the test. Nothing should be able to shatter the promises we made, but there’s a fine line between tenacious and toxic.

Someone should’ve warned us that even a drop of pretty poison will spread until all that’s left are shattered pieces and broken memories.

This is a full-length novel and book two of three. It cannot be read as a standalone, and it ends with a cliff-hanger. This book contains sensitive topics that may not be suitable for all readers. If needed, you can find a list of trigger warnings on Kelsey Clayton's website. Please read safely.

This is a spiral read. Gives you feelings you had no idea you had. At times I was holding my breath not realizing I was doing it. Leaving us on a cliff hanger after what happened and took place. Did he really die? Does she really leave? Who has all this power?

Give me a minute while I pick my jaw up off the floor...I'm not okay.

This book picks up right where we left of in book one, Hayes choosing Laiken. I really do love me a brother's best friend romance. Hayes is ALL IN with Laiken in this book and I couldn't get enough of these two, their witty banter, competitiveness and just all out love for each other.

I knew it was too good to be true. The twists and turns this book took were off the charts fabulous! I know this was initially planned as a duet, but the characters wanted more and I'm not even mad about it. I don't want to part with this characters either. I do, however, want to see them get their HEA, they have earned it!

I can't wait for book 3! AND...hoping Cam and Mali get a book too!

    Review of the entire series!

Okay, wow! The Pretty Poison trilogy is absolutely fantastic. Hayes and Laiken are just 🥹😍🥵

The journey these books take you on is one I was not expecting. It is swoony, sexy, and funny but also with mysterious twists and turns that I did not see coming. It’s a mix of the feelings Friends, Pretty Little Liars, and a dash of Friday Night Lights gives you but hockey edition.

The banter and friendships are just perfect. Mali and Laiken’s sass is next level and let me tell you, I’m here for it. 😂 Hayes and Cam have their hands full with the two of them. You just never know what’s going to come out of their mouths.

This story is beautiful, start to finish! But the way book 3 had me sucked in, I was up until 4 am because I could not put it down. I needed to know what happened. The angst, the drama, the mystery, the love…you have got to check these books out!

    Synopsis (possible spoilers ahead)

    Book 1:
    4.5 ⭐️
Laiken is in the summer after high school, and she’s been in love with her brother’s best friend for three years. Hayes is a playboy who fears commitment and relationship due to family trauma. At a party Hayes comes to Laiken’s rescue to shut down her ex and kisses her, and well, to say things aren’t the same is an understatement.

Hayes and Laiken’s “relationship” blossoms in secret mainly because Hayes knows he won’t be able to keep Laiken and his best friend. But when he’s ultimately forced to chose between two of the most important people in his life, he chooses to push her away.

Well, that is until he smartens up and offers his best friend means to hurt him as he confesses he’s falling in love with his sister. 😅

    Book 2:
    4⭐️
Hayes and Laiken’s relationship is no longer forced to be secret. And now they it’s out in the open, their relationship continues to grow into a beautiful, sexy, and slightly possessive (okay very possessive, but in the best possible way) love story.

Hayes knows he’s found the one his soul is meant for and well, when you know you know. He and Laiken take the next step in their relationship and vow themselves to one another until death parts them. Little did they know this reality could be sooner than later.

On Hayes’ 21st birthday, a day meant to celebrate, the unthinkable happens and their lives will never be the same. Laiken is forced to work thru the confusion and trauma from that night which is only complicated further by a mysterious someone leaving her threats. Faced with an impossible decision, she does the only thing she knows how to keep those she loves safe, even if it breaks all their hearts in the process.

    Book 3:
    5⭐️
The story concludes 1.5 years later. Laiken has left her home, and those she loves most in the world, including her husband. He’s become a shell of the person he was when he was with her. Life has not been kind to Hayes Wilder the last year and a half, but he’s doing his best to keep his family, his bar, and himself above water.

Laiken has done what she was told and left town and never looked back to keep Hayes safe. Until she gets a call saying he’s been in an accident and she can’t help herself until she knows he’s okay. However, stepping foot back sets everything she’s been avoiding into motion and the four of them are faced to deal with the consequences.

Laiken and Hayes struggle to find where their relationship can go from here, all while having to watch over their shoulder.

Will they ever get back to the love they had before? Will the events of Hayes’ 21st birthday haunt them forever? Will they all make it out alive?

Trust me when I tell you, this is a journey you want to take to find out. Thank you, Kelsey, for bring this sorry to life! I cannot wait to catch up with this crew again in Cam and Mali’s book. The world may not be ready for that girl’s sass, but I sure am 😂

Great story. I loved the relationship evolving. Wish I could get more of Cam & Mali but this whole story line with the senator son is dragging. I also dislike breaks in the relationship and I hope she didn't cheat on H. I'm going to go to the next book. Glad I these were all released before I started reading. As usual, this author is a total 5 in making characters actually seem in love and giving me a good OTT alphamale to read

I read the first book, and was surprised when it continued on to the second. Now I find out it's going on to the third. Seems like this story which i originally loved is starting to drag on ... Not sure I feel this great story needed to be spread through 3 books. Hmm

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for Fans of Thrillers and Suspense!
Reviewed in Canada on February 4, 2025
A Dose of Pretty Poison” completely captivated me from start to finish. The author weaves a gripping narrative full of twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat. The characters are well-developed, and their complex motivations add layers of intrigue to the plot. The suspense builds so perfectly, you won't be able to put it down.

What I particularly loved was how the story balances psychological tension with action, never losing its pace. The writing is sharp, and the atmosphere is both haunting and immersive. Every page pulls you deeper into the mystery, and by the end, I found myself reflecting on the story long after I finished.

If you're a fan of thrillers that keep you guessing and want a book that’s impossible to put down, this one is definitely for you! Highly recommend!

    ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is the second part of the trilogy and contain some spoilers so if you haven’t read it please be aware that you will find some.

I’m so surprised with this second part! Lai and H development was amazingly well written. All the aspects Cam reactions and the changes in the conflict. Also I was not expecting a marriage at all really, I was shocked to the core. Also, I was just like everybody expecting a surprise pregnancy LOL

As a couple, the chapters were so sweet I love their bound. How the group dynamic makes everything even more interesting. I love how H chances in his best version for Lai and I loved how they would do basic anything for each other. Deep love and connection.

That ending wow I was not expecting that and I’m craving the final part. I just want my babies to be together, really I need it now.

Congrats for this amazing release Kelsey.

This is the 2nd book in the series which picks up right where it left off 👀 Hayes finally telling Cam about him & Laiken 🤍

This book was great also i love the chemistry between Laiken & Hayes they are so just made for eachother!

Hayes come into some money, him & Cam decide they want to open a bar together which has its bumps along the way.

There is so much more that happens in the book that i don't want to give away! This book turns a little darker than the 1st 👀

Also this book ends on a cliffhanger ❤️‍🩹

This series is so worth the read i loved everything about it ❤️‍🔥

    Still good overall book
But I just can't with lakes
Willfully ignorant selfish and excruciatingly redundant.
You hold out hope she's actually smart and uses her critical thinking then again she's still a girl playing grown ups
She can't be this belligerent with the character builds around her and the others in the book but she is
Everyone but her is clued on, I'm just glad if I skip most of her parts minus the bits that help the story and plot that the book is pretty good.
