In Italy for Love: A gorgeous romantic read from Leonie Mack Kindle Edition
Live your very own Italian dream and let bestseller Leonie Mack whisk you away.
Julia Volpe’s Italian dream has turned into a nightmare.
Still living with her ex, Luca, a year after they’ve broken up, desperate to sell the dilapidated B&B that was meant to be their future, Jules knows she needs to leave. There are just two problems. Her passport has expired and she’s broke.
Not quite ready to ask her parents for help – at the ripe old age of twenty-seven – Jules decides to head as far away from Luca as she can to work on an olive farm until she has enough money to pay for her passport and a ticket back home.
Jules has sworn off love, but she hadn’t bargained on the beauty of Cividale del Friuli, the ancient Italian town on the banks of the gloriously blue Natisone river. As the community of farmers, neighbours and locals generously welcome her into their lives, Jules can feel her defences crumbling. But it’s when she meets Alex, broodingly handsome yet charmingly gallant, that Jules truly knows she’s in trouble. Because Alex has sworn off love too, and his reasons run deep enough for him to keep his word just as Jules is starting to reconsider her resistance to romance.
Romantic, spell-binding, truly touching and perfect for all fans of Jill Mansell, Mandy Baggot and Sarah Morgan.

Thank you for stopping by!
I write love stories set in incredible places, infused with the humour of real life. I am a lifelong traveller myself and I love exploring new architecture and breath-taking landscapes, but it’s the people that really stick with me.
I love bringing places to life with characters who learn about themselves and the world, often through amusing mishaps or unexpected adventures. I am fascinated by the human drive for creativity, so my books explore music and art, and the social and emotional experience of food and drink.
Most importantly, all of my stories follow complex characters as they fall in love, growing and changing until they are ready for their greatest adventure: their happily ever after.
I love to make readers laugh and smile and to take them on a memorable journey, full of new experiences. Bringing the world to the page (and the reader to the world) is the best job I could imagine.
Thank you for reading and bon voyage!
Leonie

About the author

After leaving Australia ‘for a year’ in 2006, Leonie never went home and now travels across Europe jotting down love stories wherever she goes. She has a degree in languages and is an expert at taking public transport and travelling under her own steam on foot or by bike. ‘Home’ is now in central Germany, in the vineyards along the Main river, where she spends her time writing happy endings in English and speaking German with bad grammar.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2025I loved discovering a new regional and cultural part of Italy. The fictional characters and their modern romance with all their complex issues was just a bonus. This author has researched and brought to vivid life an area of Italy begging to be explored off the beaten path of more widely visited tourist spots. Having once lived and traveled in Italy, I now choose authors who incorporate the scenery, history and culture into their storytelling. I will definitely seek out more works by this author.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2024While Paris may be known as the "city of love", Italy as a whole, captured my heart years ago when I visited with my parents.
Could it be all the men yelling "bella"?
Could it be the abundance of handsome men?
Could it be some of the best food on Earth, imo?
Could it be the beautiful charm in the small towns throughout the country?
All I know is I could easily find myself wrapped up in it all and changing the course of my life for a man, all in the name of love.
The heroine of the story, Julia Volpe, does just that. Only it doesn't work out so well.
Packing up with low funds and no place to stay, she ventures off to another town - trading labor for a place to stay, while she gets her passport paperwork in order. And on her first day there, she meets Alessandro "Alex" Mattelig. Sharing one night of passion should help get over her broken heart, right?
Fate has other plans in mind, as the two who thought they'd never see each other again, are forced to live together. It was obvious where things would eventually lead, but Alex's past relationship does slow down the whole process.
What I loved most about this story was the life Julia led, immersing herself in this new world, working on an olive farm, and embracing everything around her. I loved how she made the best of the circumstances, even when things seemed to completely go wrong. And I think her attitude about life made Alex rethink his own approach to it.
While parts of this story were predictable, there was still a charm that I relished, and I adored the grand jesture at the end. Overall a fun romance that made me want to rebook a flight to Italy.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2024In Italy for Love is a great romance told from a dual point of view. The setting in rural italy is gorgeous and perfect for the story. The obstacles that the characters must overcome before their happy ending are believable and the storyline is realistic.
Jules is a well written and thoroughly likable character with a dog. I didn’t love Alex. You can be traumatized and behave decently at the same time and I don’t think he did really. I would also have liked to see a little more development during the story in both characters and some more interaction with the side characters. (And I wouldn’t have minded a bit less internal dialogue). But these are minor complaints compared to the novel’s overall wonderfullness. It inwokes a lovely seasonal feel for the autumn with a recurring theme of ghosts and chestnuts and it’s highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2024Leonie Mack's book, In Italy for Love, is an excellent read. You won't want to put it down once you start reading it.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2024If you're a sucker for travel and romance, In Italy for Love by Leonie Mack is the perfect pick. That being said, I'll be honest—it starts off a bit slow. The first few chapters left me waiting for something to happen, and it took some time for the story to pick up speed. But trust me, once it does, it's like a slow burn that turns into a cozy blaze. As the main character's relationship deepens, so does the connection you feel with the characters. They both have their own emotional baggage to deal with, and it’s satisfying to watch them grow and find happiness together. Quick, easy read that's totally worth it. It's a charming, feel-good romance that delivers all the beautiful scenery and heartfelt moments you could ask for. If you’ve ever dreamed of falling in love in Italy, this book will transport you right there.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2025A story of independence, hard work and the feelings of love. Can two people release their emotions to start a life together.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2024Her stories are so good. Dont miss any part of any of them. This one is no exception. Let her rip
- Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2024In Italy for Love by Leonie Mack was an amazing read!! If you like forced proximity, one night stand, roommates to lovers, damaged MCs, book that take place in Italy then you will love this book!!
Jules moved to Italy for her now ex-boyfriend and is trying to back to Australia. Due to issues with her passport and low funds, she’s stuck in Italy for a few more weeks. She gets a job on a farm in Cividale, in exchange for room and board. She meets Alex and they have a one night stand never expecting to see each other again. Only to run into each other on the farm where she now works.
Mack did such an amazing job with this story. I literally wanted to read this book because it takes place in Italy, my dream vacation. She did such a great job with the storyline and plot. The descriptions of the places in Italy the villages, the farms, and the countryside were amazing. I thought the characters of Alex and Jules were so well written along with her meddling family. I cannot recommend this book enough. I loved it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Falling in love with Italy
This book made it so easy to fall in love with the characters and Italy. The author transports you to Italy by wonderfully drawing you in with the food, landscape and people of Cividale del Friuli.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely storytelling
I really enjoyed this book. Leonie Mack has written another great story, with some strong main characters, Jules & Alex, who were both dealing with grief & loss in their lives. You could really feel the tension & attraction between them, yet also the fear of what might happen. I loved the village community the author created, it was so supportive & protective of Jules & Alex - but also interfering, with some lol moments. If only it was all real - I’d love to go there! It was a really good read, would be a great holiday read or on a wet weekend!

From the beginning to the end, the story kept me enthralled with the culture, relationships and descriptions of a different type of Italy and also the love story evolving throughout.

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect armchair travel
The best thing about Leonie Mack’s romance stories are the way she takes you to little known corners of foreign lands and immerses you fully in the sights and sounds of the place, and In Italy For Love is no exception, in fact, it might be my favourite one yet, although I am sure I say that every time I review one of her books!
It is really obvious when you read her writing that so much research goes in to her work, to the point where she has fallen in love with whatever destination she is writing about and this enthusiasm leaps of the page and pulls in the reader completely. I defy you to read this book and not be googling this area of north-east Italy, wondering how soon you can get there for a trip of your own. Once you have read about the beautiful medieval city, the stunning scenery, the quaint customs and the friendly people, you will be dying to experience it all for yourself. And, if you can’t, reading this book is the next best thing.
If you are looking for more than armchair travel in your novel, maybe a touch of romance, well, this book has that in spades too. This is a gorgeous, emotional, complex love story with two troubled people finding each other and learning to trust and love again. The main characters are both wonderfully written, tender and insightful and so moving. Despite this looking like a light romance – and it does have lightness – the story really touched me deeply and I found myself with a tear in my eye at more than one point in the story. This author’s writing gets better and better and she really manages to plumb the emotional depths with real empathy and compassion, without being preachy or maudlin. The book manages to tread the find line between a light romantic story and a truthful relationship perfectly.
Everything you could possibly want in this type of book, it is absolutely wonderful – I loved it.
