City of Goblins (In the System Book #1): LitRPG Series Kindle Edition
Ivan Susanin, a typical guy and unemployed techie, is initiated by the System and transported, together with a thousand other players, to an unknown location beyond Earth. Ivan has an interface, a spear, and basic weapon skills. All he has to do to return to Earth is complete a simple quest and reach the second level.
But experience points are only awarded for kills in this game, and the clock is ticking. Whoever doesn’t score within 24 hours will remain in the location forever.
The game takes places in the ruins of a massive city, where the undead lurk in the central districts and the outskirts are raided by the descendants of past owners. The undead are strong, while the goblins rarely move around alone and aren’t worth much XP. The most valuable prey under these conditions are formal allies, i.e. the other players. If a player is capable of killing a fellow human, of course. Even if they aren’t planning to go against their own nature by murdering innocents, who said that they will have a choice? It’s kill or be killed!
Those who complete the quest will be returned to Earth, where they can rest and prepare for the next attempt. Beyond the local objective is also a global one. In the center of the city stands a temple to a fallen god, and until one of the players captures the Altar, the mission will be repeated again and again. But when all you’re holding is a spear, your allies can’t be trusted, and resurrection is nearly impossible, this isn’t much more than a delayed death sentence…
For the first seven players, who become the Earth Gods, this mission is a chance to rapidly gain power and take charge of a united Pantheon. A chance to escape death and protect our world from invasion. Although there is only one altar and the Gods make others do their work.
Ivan must make a choice and decide whose pawn he will become. Or should he take a risk, refuse their patronage and keep his options open?

★★★★☆ LitRPGPodcast - The game mechanics are an intricate part of the story and their exploration is a good bit of the early section of the novel. But there's nothing too new with any many familiar elements like levels, stats, abilities that increase with practice, XP from killing. There is a loot system that is a little different with cards dropping from killed opponents that contain system equipment or more rarely skills. Overall, this is an action focused story that has a good apocalypse survival vibe when the characters are on the goblin world. Aside from the abrupt ending, its pacing is pretty good, though I liked the solo journey section more than the later one. Score: 7.6 out of 10.
★★★★☆ Johnny Clark - Plot: Play a game and complete the mission. Fail and you stay in the game or die. Really enjoyed this story. If I had to pick something I disliked, it would be that I thought the story was to short. This one just pulled me in and didn't let go.Characters: I enjoyed the MC. His thought process is a lot like mine and I felt an immediate connection. I really look forward to book two. 8.5/10.
★★★★☆ BR - Good LitRPG story. Really enjoy reading it. Definitely will read continuation of a story.
★★★★☆ Amazon Customer - I enjoyed this book from start to finish. I did notice some errors here and there, though nothing egregious. I haven't read the original, untranslated version so I can't be sure but the translation seems fine to me. I've certainly read worse translations, I can say that much without doubt. Overall, I'm glad I read the book and look forward to the next book in the series.
From the Author
"I'm going," I said, shifting into Invisibility and reluctantly breaking into a run. I had strong doubts about whether my skill would work on the undead, but I had to test it. To my surprise, I ran towards the battle, and not away, as my voice of reason instructed.
We can't win... It's too strong... I must run... I'm going to die...
I stumbled, belatedly realizing that it wasn't my cowardice, but the Aura of Terror. It was difficult to get close to the creature, but once I recognized this, running became easier. The overwhelming feeling receded, although I'm sure I'd have run faster in the opposite direction.
These dark thoughts didn't stop me from striking when the creature paused for a moment as it tried to dislodge a player impaled on its tail. I sensed that the moment was close to ideal.

"Fine," I gripped the spear, and the chill eased, as if agreeing that my chances were much better with it. The horn blared again, calling to attack, but I could see that the players were ready to run.
"No!" shouted a familiar voice.
The chimera lifted another player into the air, piercing his body. With a flick of its paw, it flung him aside. Marcus? That would be three out of the eight leaders. Five leaders now... Damn!
My next blow was a success. The spear grazed several bones, but kept going until it finally felt resistance. A rush of energy swept through me, almost making me scream with exertion. Come on!
My Invisibility faded. I dropped to one knee. Only half of the spear remained in my hand, for it had snapped. The tip and a piece of the shaft were somewhere inside the pile of bones.
"Is it dead?" someone asked.
It was as if the sound had been turned back on. I heard moans, cries, and calls for help. This battle had cost us dearly, leaving about four dozen dead and seriously wounded on the ground.
I got back to my feet and looked around.
"It's dead! We won!" someone took up the cry, and the shouts soon merged into a united roar which grew in strength.
I looked around and found the Swordsman standing next to the monster's head.
"I suppose I should be congratulating you," the Swordsman said grimly.
This was a moment of my greatest vulnerability. I hadn't become stronger just yet, but the price on my head had increased dramatically.
"It's OUR victory, " I stubbornly said.

About the author

Although an avid reader from an early age, Petr had never tried to write a book himself until he began his IT studies. His first book received a warm welcome from his online readership and Petr even got a letter from a traditional publisher showing interest in his book. But when Petr accepted their proposal, he didn’t receive a reply. He never heard from them again.
A few years later, already an IT professional, Petr wrote another book and sent the manuscript out to publishers. This time, it was rejected. In those days, writers were only considered “proper authors” if they worked with traditional publishers; all others were branded as amateurs.
For the next five years, Petr didn’t write much but did a lot of reading instead. That’s why the arrival of the new genre of LitRPG, followed by RealRPG, immediately piqued his interest. A few more years down the road, and Petr realized it was probably the right moment to get back into writing. If it didn’t work now, then he’d call it a day.
By then, the world had seen the arrival of online writing portals which allowed authors to sell their books directly to their readers, bypassing traditional publishing houses. Petr quit his day job and started a new book. This time it was RealRPG. Readers immediately noticed his City of Goblins, leaving thousands of comments and positive rankings. The following installments consolidated his success, securing the new series’ place among the leaders of the new genre.
They say that three is a charm – it certainly was for Petr, who can now pursue his passion for writing full time. And now you too have a unique opportunity to read his books in many languages.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2024This was a good book that had a very interesting main character. They had a good progression throughout the story and there was a lot of action and adventure as well. It will be interesting to see how the characters choices so far impact the adventures in future books and if the goblin he helped returns to help him or cause problems. I enjoyed this book and recommend it and hope for more books following these characters and set in this universe.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2024This was a ok start to the series. It had a unique take on litrpg that I liked but the book had trouble with pacing. The middle was dry and detracted from a good start. Hopefully the author fixes this in the next one.

The premise is interesting and the MC is not overly OP striking a good balance.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2024I will admit to loving these type of books of being transported to another world to be the hero. Most have the hero so silly powerful by the middle of the novel it becomes comical, not this hero, he works so hard just to get a level you are wondering when and what's going to kill him.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2020The media could not be loaded.
The scope of the story goes from the survival of the MC and him learning about this new system he’s gotten to large groups of humans trying to survive on this new world against an army of goblins. It doesn’t have a proper ending, instead it feels like a ‘part 1’ or a place a serial story was just paused to become a novel.
The game mechanics are an intricate part of the story and their exploration is a good bit of the early section of the novel. But there’s nothing too new with any many familiar elements like levels, stats, abilities that increase with practice, XP from killing. - Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2020The story is a bit slow especially the second time the main character is coming to fight. Also that was kind of lame that took me two weeks to recover when he came back from the first battle. Character growth is really slow this one they'll be a two attribute points a level and they have to pay for skill gains with that same experience
- Reviewed in the United States on January 1, 2022The MC has a rough time of it when he is tossed into the Goblin City pretty much unprepared for what is to come! He has 24 hours and several goals to meet to be able to survive and return to earth! Since he only has luck at 2, 9t isn't luck, but hard work and smarts that carries him through! a month later he is tossed back in again, but with a better understanding of what to expect, thing go a little better, but it is still quite a challenge just to survive! Get it, read it, you won't be sorry!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2021I liked the world and skill card system, and the writing style and characterization is excellent. Good range of heros and villans on the human players in the various waves being sent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good story
This is a nicely written and polished tale and is obviously the beginning of a series. The MC came across well and the mechanics of the system makes sense. I'll be reading Book Two when it's released.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intresting
The set up of the book promises a situation that demands compromises from our MC and rather than instantly losing all traces of conscience and morality or staying idealistic and succeeding despite ignoring his circumstances he instead does his best and while his actions are certainly morally questionable he finds a middle ground that works for him. The combat is also solid but it was largely the main character which set the book apart from me. The set up also promises an intriguing greater plot

Great storyline here, creditable characters nothing over powered, no harem gimmick, to make it credible, a well put together piece of work.
Well worth your reading dollar
