The Paradise Killer (DI Barney Mains Book 4) Kindle Edition
The body is bizarrely posed in the middle of an exclusive shopping street.
The killer seems to be making a statement. But who is he? And what is he trying to say?
The police need answers fast. Because, as the French Riviera broils in a never-ending heatwave, it looks like someone is targeting influencers against global warming.
Thousands of climate activists, in Nice for their biggest rally of the year, go berserk. And all hell breaks loose across the city.
When the dust settles, the multi-billionaire head of Big Oil is found brutally slain on his super-yacht. And a world-famous environmentalist is the prime suspect.
But is it a revenge killing? Or a crime of passion?
Or could there really be a hired assassin on the loose, a near-mythical figure so elusive that he's known only as The Ghost?
DI Barney Mains is not short of suspects. But he's running out of time.
Because his niece has been taken and if he's going to get her back alive, he has no choice but to confront his demons...

From the Author
The starting point for The DI Barney Mains series is the simple belief that everyone deserves a second chance.
For staid Scots Detective Inspector Barney Mains, that opportunity comes during a simple flag-flying exercise in the South of France, in Book One The Detective Wakes.
But his personal journey is in a time and place where the stretching gap between rich and poor is ever more obvious. As the saying goes, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer - and that's been even more true in these pandemic years.
So, we embark on a voyage of self-discovery alongside Barney, in the company of a high-flying young female sidekick and a wise French police Captain in a twisty, entertaining read, spiced up with the odd murder and deliciously corrupt politicians.
The action switches between the UK and France with some abrupt twists as Barney gets drawn into a shocking plot and suddenly finds himself questioning the very system he's defended all his life.
Far from his old desk in a corner of Edinburgh Police HQ, he finds himself at the centre of reforms that could change the Western way of life for good.
In The Major Minor Murders, Barney has resigned from the force in protest over political interference and he's living the dream as an artist on the French Riviera. Until, that is, he learns that his estranged criminal brother is on the run from a murder charge back in Edinburgh.
Again, Barney and friends must lock horns with a crooked member of the privileged elite, not to mention two particularly ruthless killers, in this fast-paced race against time.
Despite the drama however, there's time to re-evaluate relationships in his troubled family and hopefully find a way to bury the past.
Then, in the previous book, A Killer Legacy, the courtroom slaying of a hitman leads to Barney being landed with the victim's mysterious last wish. In a South of France being torn apart by wildfires and anti-British protests, he inherits information too hot to handle.
All he has to do is stay alive long enough to share it with the world...

About the Author
Formerly based in East Lothian, near Edinburgh, Scotland, he now resides in Nice in the South of France, the main setting for his DI Barney Mains series.
After a full-on career as a campaigning newspaper reporter, he and wife Jean launched their own recruitment company in central Edinburgh and for twelve fun-packed years worked closely together alongside their brilliant team - without spilling a single drop of blood.
The Alpes-Maritimes and Var departments, on the other hand, have provided a host of dramatic locations just perfect as inspiration for the odd spot of fictional gore.
Locals, blessed with scenery ranging from unspoilt mountain villages to the classic palms-and-marinas coast, claim that they can be swimming one moment and ski-ing a little over an hour later. It's a claim not yet put to the test!
Besides, when not writing or travelling, Jim's more likely to be off on a hike in the hills with his ever-ready buddy, Jack the Irish Terrier.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2023Format: KindleAnother entertaining story with Barney Mains and Jean-Luc. Environmental activists and online influencers are part of the story, and both are topical. This mystery will keep you guessing.
Barney’s niece Abbey is featured and it’s nice to see her character develop. Barney’s father and brother also are part of the story.
The sentence structure could have been better, and there were a few typos.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2023Format: KindleThere’s something about DI Barney Mains that makes me so eager to read about him. He’s such a rock.
This is the fourth book in the series and I must admit that I found him very likeable from the start. When we first met him he was in a place in life where he wasn’t sure about how his future would look, but he got on with things. I really liked how he treated his much younger and female collegue, Ffiona, respectful but in a friendly and professional way. Ffiona has no part in this book, but Barney has that kind of manner to most characters he meet, even if we who are privy to his thoughts know what he really feels about some of them. That makes him all the more likeable to me.
Now Barney has evolved in his new role as a kind of liason for the expat brits in the Nice policeforce, he’s finding space in his life for his estranged family and he’s growing as a character.
In this book we get to know the family in a bit more relaxed manner than the last (where his brother was a main suspect) as they visit him in Nice. Not that it’s all that relaxing, they all get involved, or in the way of, the investigation in different ways, but they interact with Barney in a more relaxed way.
Shona, who’s another favourite character of mine, is not at home at the time and only get occasional phone calls. But their relationship is still a steady foundation even if it’s not mentioned a lot.
JL, local police Jean-Luc Verdeen, is very present and involved in the case even if he would rather spend time with his bees.
The working relationship between Barney and JL is easy as so far as the two individuals are concerned, but sometimes complicated due to their different nationalities and bosses.
Now, the Paradise Killer, DI Maines really hate that name, is very elusive even if there’s no shortage of suspects.
In the middle of everything there is a call to action against climate change through the group Global War, headed by the eccentric and charismatic Andy Neville.
Without givning a lecture McGhee, through his characters, puts a light on some very big challenges in our world, like inequality and climate changes. The subjects are somber and the furure bleak, but there's still a positive vibe throughout the series as people with means (like Shona for example) take action.
I like that the books are taking place in our present, the pandemic and its backlashes as well as the aforementioned challenges of our time are a background to the crimes Barney Mains must solve.
I really recommend this book and all it’s prequels, they are a joy to read. I’m eagerly awaiting the next!

- Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2024Format: KindleThis is the fourth installment in the DI Barney Mains mystery series. This is a series best read in order, although not absolutely necessary.
Barney continues in his role as liaison to the French police in Nice. This book gives him 4 murders to solve against a background of highly visible social media influencers and protestations against global environmental destruction. In short, it’s complicated and the background on the first two murders providing the relationship to the third seemed contrived. Also the rather rapid weak conclusion didn’t seem to fit the complexity.
On a personal note, this story included members of Barney’s family. His niece Abbey, a fledgling journalist, turned out to be quite useful to the plot, however the inclusion of his brother and father was superfluous.
Overall I felt the author tried to throw too many elements into the pot which ended up distracting from the story’s potential and made me
loose interest.
Stylistically, I enjoy Mr. McGhee’s writing and his characterizations. This one just didn’t have the impact its predecessors did.
Thank you to the author, the publisher Jackamos, and BookSirens for the opportunity to read and review this work.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2023Format: KindleThe Paradise Killer is the fourth novel in the DI Barney Mains Series This was my first novel by Jim McGhee and I read it as a stand alone. I am so glad I did. The author provided enough background that made me comfortable with the read. In addition, while I read this as a stand alone, I plan to go back and read the previous novels so that I get the little nuances. I encourage you to read this series as it is a real breath of fresh air. I received this novel from StoryOrigin.
