Scars (Time of Myths: Shapeshifter Sagas Book 2) Kindle Edition
Along the unforgiving coast of Snæland, Ásta’s ancestral farm is plagued with bad luck. The kinless maiden’s turf walls continue to be found damaged with claw marks, reviving old memories of the wolf attack that left her scarred, and she begins to fear the whispers are true—that Fenrir, son of Loki and king of the wolves, has come to claim her.
Torin often leaves his uncle’s farm in the southern hills to track and ensnare valuable gyrfalcons. His secret ability to turn into raptors means his falconry skills are unparalleled, earning him precious silver. If the memory of his sister's death didn’t haunt him daily, pushing him to numb his senses with drink, Torin might have married by now—as his uncle often reminds him. But the time has finally come to find a wife and settle down.
With bad luck biting at their heels, the scars from their past may seal their fate and put them in an early grave.

This was a really good book (not a novella like another book- Widow, in the series). This held my interest, to the point of staying up to late on a work night to finish. It's part of the Time of Myths series, but it is a stand-alone book, you do not need to read them in order or even together, as they are not connected in plot or anything, the only connection is the shifter part & the taking place very, very far back historically with the mythological basis to the plot.
This started a bit slow, but the flow picked up part of the way in. This was not a predictable book either, it left me guessing at what would happen next. The characters, Ásta & Torin, are likable. They have your sympathy right away for the tragic things that have happened in their lives. The trials & tribulations that they had to endure to finally get a HEA was part of what pulled them together. You could see the relationship develop & evolve, which is part of the charm to the story. The sex scenes were super tame, almost non-descriptive, so it's definitely not an erotic book, if the few sex scenes were not there, it would have been a Y/A book. I'm not complaining, since I prefer to see a relationship develop/evolve than to have crazy descriptive sex scenes, because there's more to a relationship than sex alone. There were a few places, that I had no idea of the words used, I'm assuming Icelandic or something, that had me confused for a bit.
***SPOILER***
-For some reason early on, I thought Torin could shift into other animals or at least other types of birds, not just the one type of bird. It took a little bit into the book to figure out it's just the one type of bird.
-I also was slightly puzzled about the people's reactions when the people found out the bad guy was a wolf shifter. I guess I was expecting more freaking out by them, about him being a wolf shifter, but they reacted like they had all seen shifters before, & were only concerned with the bad things he had done to Ásta & Torin & their property.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2017A good story about jealousy and scorn...Asta is struggling to keep her family's land, working hard with her few workers. She needs help, a husband and luck, or any combination of 2 that includes luck.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2019I really love this book and it was a terrific romance. Best of all it seemed to an authentic depiction of 10th century Nordic life. Plenty of drama, a great read left me wanting more. Yay Ms. Brown.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2017The story follows our heroine Ásta, who believes herself to be claimed by the god Fenrir. After the death of her brother and father, Ásta struggle to keep her farm from falling into disrepair and losing it for the debt she owes.
Torin has no more desire than to live his life solitarily catching and training falcons. However, as an orphan adopted by his uncle, he can't ignore his uncles urgings to find himself a wife.
When their paths cross, it is decided by Torino uncle and Ásta's cousin that a wedding match would be to both their benefit. However, there is a dark presence attempting to keep them apart and terrorizing the farm and sheep. A presence closer to them than they could ever guess.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 2017I love the way the Ms Brown weaves the myths with the appropriate culture and time period and adds a very readable story. I recommend her books!

- Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2017Scars captured me immediately, it wrapped itself around me and I literally felt as if I was there, standing as a spectator watching the daily life and events go by and I loved every minute.
I loved the historical 10th century the story was set in, the way they lived, farmed, interacted with each other along with the traditions and myths. I loved all the characters and following their life so much so that I could have happily continued reading about them, I didn't want the story to end. The author wrote in such a way that I felt the heart of the story flowed off the pages and into the readers mind with the details and descriptions being so clear.
Asta had become the head of the household and farm as her father and brother had died falling off the edge of a cliff the previous year. She is living hand to mouth and in serious debt but is determined to stay strong and not lose the farm her family had worked so hard to keep, even though something or someone else is determined to destroy the farm and her livelihood. Not only that her face was deeply scarred from a wolf attack years ago and claw marks have been found in the farms destruction, has the wolf now returned to claim her for good?
Torin also found himself without his parents and lives with his uncle, he carries heavy guilt around with him on a daily basis. One escape Torin does have is that he can shapeshift into a bird form which gives him so much power and the ability to train Gryfalcons so well.
Asta and Torin have both found themselves alone without their immediate families to look after them, events unfold and their marriage is arranged. They now find that they have each other, although both clueless to what a marriage entails, and a farm in need of saving. Will their joint forces be enough for the hidden darkness that lies beyond?
I loved Astra's strength and determination to do her best no matter what. I loved Torin's loving, caring, deep, protective character. I realize that I've used the word 'loved' so much but that's how I feel about this book. This is a fantastic mixture of historical fiction, traditions/myths, shapeshifting fantasy, humor and romance from an author who I haven't read before but certainly will be from now on.
Scars took me back to how I felt when I first became passionate about reading and I can't wait for more!

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting.
Slow to get started, with so many characters introduced that I became confused as to who was related to who and how. The mystery wasn't that great a surprise. The story is told competently enough. There is a HEA and some nudity (from bathing and shape shifting) and a couple of sex scenes but it does not have a pornographic feel to it.
