Judgment of Blood (Gearteeth Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 8 ratings

In 1890, a disease that turned sane men into ravenous werewolves swept through the United States like wildfire. On the brink of humanity’s extinction, Nikola Tesla and a mysterious order of scientists known as the Tellurians revealed a bold plan: the uninfected would abandon the Earth’s surface by rising up in floating salvation cities, iron and steel metropolises that carried tens of thousands of refugees above the savage apocalypse. The remnants of mankind huddled fearfully in the clouds, waiting for the werewolves to devour each other.

Twenty years later, beasts still rule the world below and now only the salvation city of Wardenclyffe remains aloft. But a telluric deadzone has caught Wardenclyffe in its riptide, forcing it toward airspace where its miraculous machinery will no longer function.

Elijah Kelly, an infected Thunder Train crewman exiled to the ground, ranges ahead of his beloved home, determined to keep it safe no matter the cost. Desperate to neutralize the deadzone before the flying city crashes, Eli discovers a brutal truth: humanity still exists on the ground, paying a terrible vampiric price for their survival.

Faced with an impossible choice between sacrificing thousands of innocent lives or betraying the rebels fighting for their freedom against an oppressive regime, Eli is forced to rely on an unlikely ally lurking deep within his own blood, his only hope if he wishes to defy the inevitable.

Born a modern-day nomad in the Deep South, Timothy Black wandered through most of the southern United States in an attempt to find his life, love, and home. After studying Geology, Astronomy, and the Occult, he found himself with a degree in Philosophy and a habit of writing odd things. A serial killer of coffee and whiskey sours, he has since found his den in the Pacific Northwest with two raucous bird ladies that peck him when he gets too far out of line. That's a whole lot of beaking.

Timothy Black’s books are so intricately plotted and engrossing. Set in a richly imagined alternate reality in which salvation cities have had to leave the surface to escape werewolves. What makes this a remarkable novel is how Timothy Black has lovingly crafted a detailed world where despite its horror/ fantasy/steam-punk elements, the characters are extraordinary and have a powerful impact. Everyone is sure to derive their own favorites. I adore Sister Blister personally. I highly recommend for that reason starting with the first book in the series; Gearteeth, to submerge yourself in this compelling world. Can’t wait for the final installment!

In a world where a werewolf apocalypse has occurred, one would think that the primary evil in the world to avoid would be the werewolves. Not so, in the Gearteeth world. Like all great sci-fi and fantasy, Timothy Black uses a fantastical world of flying cities and werewolves to explore the darker side of human nature, where the true monsters of the story show up in unexpected places.

Cliffhanger endings always frustrate me a bit, but I'll definitely be there when the story concludes in the next volume.

A direct criticism of the e-book (speaking only of implementation, not content) is that the digital formatting is very limited and perhaps rushed, missing even a functional table of contents. I would hope that Blysster Press devotes more time and effort into future digital volumes as the presentation actually detracted from my enjoyment of the book. A more navigable digital product with cleaner presentation would have increased my enjoyment of this volume greatly.

Timothy tells an amazing story that propels you into a world of wonder. The character development makes you care about the people you read about as if they were family going through an amazing journey; constantly gobbling up the tale, yearning to help. Get it in gear buddy and get me that third book...!

I received an advance reader copy of Judgment of Blood for free, and am leaving this review voluntarily.

Sequels occupy an interesting space. Sometimes, they can be exercises in futility, artificially extending a story, while others reinvent the first book, telling a completely different tale. Then there are those that take what worked in the first book and double down on it, telling the story with more confidence than that first effort. That first book was the thoroughly enjoyable Gearteeth. With Judgment of Blood, the author has outdone himself.

Once again, it tells a story with the unique blend of steampunk and werewolves. Further complicating matters is the addition of vampires. As much of a cliche as vampires can be, their inclusion presents a new challenge for protagonist Elijah, while also adding depth.

Set shortly after the events of Gearteeth, the book takes place in an alternate early 20th century where most of humanity has been overrun by werewolves, and the survivors have taken to the sky in floating cities. Where that first book largely took place in one such city, this takes place on ground zero, Earth. In changing the setting, the steampunk elements are lighter. While this may disappoint some, where the elements do appear, they're written with wonderful attention to detail as the book paints them with a unique sci-fi edge.

This is a shorter book than its predecessor and a comparatively quicker read. Just as much happens, but the writing isn't as densely packed. The prose that flows well as it tells an engrossing plot, paced incredibly well.

Judgment of Blood rests on Elijah’s shoulders. He’s once again presented as an alpha male, which some readers will dislike, though it makes perfect sense in relation to his struggles. The book doubles down on him and explores new facets to his personality. As much as I enjoyed the character in the first book, my appreciation for him only grew in the sequel.

The other characters are presented without the same level of depth, but rather than being underdeveloped, it’s symptomatic of the book’s focus being on its protagonist. The characters don't feel underdeveloped, and they are all believable in context of its world. The book includes an eclectic mix of characters, all of them enjoyable.

The book features a higher proportion of dialogue than its predecessor, and it constantly delights. While steampunk books usually sound as though they come from the UK, the book’s dialogue feels distinctly American, and of its era. The characters all have distinct voices, and the dialogue always sounds as though it’s coming from living, breathing people.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, as the second book in a trilogy, Judgment of Blood doesn’t stand alone. While readers can certainly follow the book without issue, iy book ends on quite the cliffhanger.

Judgment of Blood combines sci-fi, fantasy and horror, and presents a steampunk landscape in vivid detail. With an engrossing plot and wonderful characters, it’s a recipe for success.

I've got to admit, I'm normally either a Science Fiction, or Fantasy reader, but when I had a friend push me towards book one of this series - I found myself really enjoying what I hope I am identifying correctly as a steampunk world; I got through the first book very quickly, and then found myself like many others anxiously awaiting the second book. (If you have not read either, I do think reading them back to back will help the story keep flowing for you! Part of me wishes I had re-read the first, because I read a lot of books in between, and though I was able to keep up, this world really is different than the worlds in the stories I normally read, and it took a moment to get my brain into gear).

Still, a great read, and I'm looking forward to the third installment; I will do myself a favor and re-read the first two before reading that one!

    Werewolves are cool.

A werewolf who must save the last remnants of humanity who live in a floating city: Even cooler.

Two of the character names are Bloodrath and Sister Blister, and that is SO METAL. As in, when they appear I heard Dokken and Molly Hatchet.

Judgment of Blood has an intricately realized world and characters living in it. The story is a pulp adventure, with thrilling escapes, demonic bad guys, monsters, and funny dialogue that keeps the whole thing moving. That alone would be good for me, but this one has werewolves, too.

The writer has already announced the release date of his next book, and I’m going to need that to hurry up and get here.

Was given a copy to read and was kept on the edge of my seat for a breathless romp through danger and deadly surroundings. The writing was crisp, fast paced and the action non-ending. Black is a sure thing when it comes to gripping, gory, and gut wrenching reading adventure. - - Marilyn A. Hudson, Author
