4.5 out of 5 stars 2 ratings

Following the assassination of Lord Mountbatten and the massacre of 18 soldiers at Warrenpoint, Margaret Thatcher received her first Royal Decree. Five simple words - I want them all dead.

There is anger and bitterness amongst the ranks of the British forces in Northern Ireland.
Embedded in a regular regiment in order to gain familiarity with the people and the streets of Belfast, Mathew Price is confronted with the horrific demise of his best friend.
A week later, he is responsible for the death of the pregnant wife of Sean McGee.
Expecting shame and dishonour, Mathew finds himself lured into a game of lethal deception as he is coerced into extracting revenge on behalf of the British government; a game that culminates in a savage attempt on his own life and his subsequent self-imposed obscurity.
Having served time in the Maze prison, Sean McGee is ordered to find and kill Mathew Price.
Sean is the perfect weapon. Forged by bitterness and anger. Consumed by hatred and his need for revenge, he embarks upon a journey that will take him to parts of the world that he has only ever dreamed of.
As he follows in Mathew’s enigmatic footsteps, he will learn much about himself and the man he has been ordered to kill.
Two men, entangled by bitterness and anger. Their lives defined by the darkest aspects of human nature.
And yet, despite their destinies compelling them to make horrific choices and confront overwhelming loss, they eventually come to terms with that most fundamental of human values.

What it means to truly love.

It's taken the best part of 10yrs to complete the Born To Be King series.

People have asked me about the series title. I chose it for a number of reasons. It's derived from an old Scottish rhyme - Speed bonnie boat like a bird on the wing over the sea to Skye. Carry the lad, born to be king....

I like the concept of continuation and heritage that the rhyme evokes, and it's this idea of how our actions influence not only our own futures but can have far-reaching outcomes for others, sometimes for generations to come, that inspired the series.

At the end of the day, I write for entertainment. Above all, at least to my mind, a book - no matter how dark it might be - should always be entertaining and for me, that recipe must be based on action, murder and mystery, political intrigue, and bags of romance!

There is another trilogy to follow. It's mostly written. However, it's taken from some of my first work and, whilst I like the concept, I'm forced to admit that the writing requires some serious editing. Watch this space!

My wife and I live on a tiny island situated off Atlantic Canada and our sailboat - that I found sinking in the Dominican Republic - in which we cruise the East coast, down to the Bahamas.

Once upon a lifetime, I was a great adventurer. As I grew older, I turned to the ocean because - rather ignorantly - I thought it would be an easier, safer alternative to my love of mountaineering, and part of that story is told in Saving Tropical Delight.

I write in the winter months when the wind howls and the rains clatter and the whole commotion of it all ignites my imagination.

I'm a trained sommelier and an experienced chef, and my wife is French Canadian, so food and wine are important to us. I also know my way around the strings of a guitar, but I'm a lousy singer!

Food, wine, and the weather are all important to my writing, regardless of genre, because such things are in our DNA (particularly in my blood stream!) and to me, no character worth their salt, is of interest without such details.

I have a motto tattoo on my arm - Dum Vivimus Vivamus - while we live, let us live.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fastinating stuff!
Reviewed in Canada on November 16, 2022
As a fan of JVK's writing, I was slightly concerned that his new title has a military theme. However, the army stuff is short lived and necessary to set the scene for a much broader, international thriller in which the action is both intriguing and riveting. In a story that entwined the lives of a hero who can be terrifyingly inhuman and a villain who can be surprisingly vulnerable, JVK explores the concepts of right and wrong set in a period where such issues were woefully blurred. This book is fast paced, poignant, continuously entertaining, and entirely credible. A must for those who enjoy intelligent writing with a large dollop of adventure blended with a satisfying amount of romance.
