Keeping What's Mine: A Second-Chance, Small-Town, Short Steamy Romance Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 66 ratings

FLORA:
I return to my hometown for the funeral of my great-aunt Zee, who brought me up.
I’ve missed Dogwood Falls during the six years that I’ve been living in Silicon Valley, working for a big tech company.
I’ve missed my husband, too.
But since he refused to move with me for my career, I left him behind.
Now I’m back, and he’s as gorgeous—and as infuriating—as ever.
When the will is read, there’s a twist: I can’t inherit Aunt Zee’s estate unless I meet her conditions.
One, the renovations to the Victorian house must be completed.
Two, I have to live in the house until it’s fully restored.
Three, the contractor renovating the house must also live in the house until it’s restored.
…and I’ll give you three guesses as to who Aunt Zee hired as her contractor.

EVERETT:
When my client, and temporary landlady, dies in the middle of a house renovation, I figure that’s the end of the job.
Her will says otherwise.
The will says if I don’t continue to live in the house, I won’t get paid.
And my client’s only living relative…is my wife.
Flora’s the love of my life.
I still can’t believe that I was stupid enough to try to insist that she stay here in this small town, instead of following her and letting her have her own dreams.
I’ve regretted it ever since.
Flora won’t listen to my apologies.
Maybe now I’ve got the chance to start over with her…

A quick, but awesome story about two people who still have feelings for each other despite having been sexually for 6 years!!! They reunite - with a little help from Aunt Zinnia! It was great and loved reading it.

That’s way to long to be away!!!

I wonder if the circumstances where different would Flora had come back? Would Everett had gone looking for Flora?

Thank goodness for the meddling of Flora’s great-grand aunt!! 🤣

    I’m #teamEverett in this story y’all!!

When Flora was ten, her parents died in an accident and she ended up living with an aunt in the mountains of North Carolina. After graduating from high school, getting married to Everett Hayes led to a good life together while he worked and she attended college. But when she gets a job offer with a software company in California, their marriage is not strong enough for him to follow her, and they have lived apart for six years. Now Flora is back home to settle up her aunt’s estate, and there are three stipulations that must be met or she will not inherit anything. Also, the requirements all are connected to Everett in some way.

In this delightful romance, there are plenty of lighthearted moments which are depicted with humorous reactions and entertaining comments. I really enjoyed how Flora responded to the times when Everett was around her while working on renovations, as these scenes had me smiling at her believable behavior. There are also some emotional circumstances that take place, where the inner feelings of this couple come to the surface and are conveyed with much convincingness. The way in which Carly Keene had Flora and Everett interacting with one another repeatedly featured numerous sentiments being displayed, and I was pulled into these episodes because of the realism. KEEPING WHAT’S MINE is an emotionally compelling addition to the After I Do series.

Keeping What's Mine. This was a sweet second chance romance story. The story is about two people who loved each other but broke apart because of careers. Everett chose to stay in the small town and worked while Flora decided to go to California to pursue her career in computer tech. It tore them apart even though they were still in love. It took Flora's aunt's death to bring them back together and to realize they still love each other. Good read!

Everett and Flora got married too young. When she chooses her career over him, a divorce never crossed either of their minds. After all, they are still in love. One of them will back down. Right? Now she's back in town and has to live with him to claim her inheritance. How's she supposed to focus with a shirtless tall drink of water in tight jeans creating the best distractions?
