About the Once Upon A Time In China… series
China has a very long history that includes many fascinating stories, but often they are too complex for young children to read. For this series, Jillian Lin has rewritten the most well-known tales in a simple, engaging manner, for children from age five to enjoy. While some stories sound almost like fairytales, they are all based on true historical facts, brought to life with beautiful illustrations. Each book contains the life story of a famous figure in Chinese history, a list of interesting facts, a quiz, and a map.

Hi! I’m Jillian, the author of children’s books about the history and culture of China, even though I live all the way Down Under.

I’m also a mother of two, and my children are the main reason I started writing books. When they were still little, I had to delve into my Chinese roots for a family reunion. That’s when I stumbled on the most amazing stories about the emperors, warriors, artists, and inventors that make up the long and colorful culture and history of China.

Inspired, I decided to bring these stories to life, so that my kids could learn more about their Chinese heritage. No dates, no dry details—just interesting stories that they could enjoy and hopefully, learn a fact or two in the process. Luckily, they liked them so much that they encouraged me to share my stories with the world.

Visit my website www.jillianlin.com to get a free e-book and find out more about my book series ‘Heroes of China’ (3-6 years), ‘Once Upon A Time In China’ (6-12 years) and 'Fun Festivals' (3-6 years). I hope you’ll enjoy reading them!

I liked the fact that this was a short and easy to read story about Confucius. It has beautiful illustrations and I learned many things about him that I didn't know. This is a voluntary review of a book that I received for free.

"The King Without A Throne" was a lovely little book that gives a brief overview of the great philosopher. An adult, I've heard of him my whole life and was intrigued with the opportunity to read about his life.

I thought the book was well written with just the right amount of highlights from his life; I especially liked the list of facts at the end, and the quiz that came after that. I would like to have had one more page, though, with a list of some of his most well-known sayings.

The pictures were also very attractively done, and I imagine that they'll keep a child's interest.

~ I am leaving this honest review in exchange for a free digital copy, provided by ARC ~

I was given this children's book for free to read and review. I read books to my grandson at night when he goes to bed and we really enjoyed this one. The illustrations were beautiful and the narrative was easy enough for my two year old grandson to follow and be entertained without being dumbed down. I did not know the story of Confusious. The book is written so that children find this historical figure interesting and relatable. I also found the informative points after the story quite interesting. Those of course are meant for older children which I like as well as the quiz. I hope to read more of these books and learn more about the Asian culture. I highly recommend this book.

I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy. After reading it I think it was ok. I'm not sure what age group it was focused on. There really wasn't a clear segue from the story to historical facts. I liked the comprehension check at the end and the drawings followed the topics. Overall I thought the book was ok.

I received this book as part of an ARC review. I liked the combination of history and folk beliefs represented in this story. There is nice illustrations to go with the story that is both informative and easy to read. I liked the point form given at the end along with the questions to help one remember what they read.

Well presented for the early school years, it gives interesting facts without overloading the information that can have many children losing focus. Easy to read for the older readers and many beautiful, vivid illustrations for the younger readers.

A handy teaching resource with many facts, a quiz and an easy to follow map of China showing the areas of travel that Confucius took.
I voluntarily received and read an ARC of this book via Hidden Gems and have reflected my honest opinion.

The King Without a Throne is a clear, concise book for an introductory learning experience for children. It is a great way to spark a child's curiosity about Chinese history and Confucius. It tells the story of Confucius in fairytale format, provides interesting points after the story and multiple choice questions to challenge children to retain what they learned. The illustrations are colorful and eye-catching. I received a free copy of this book to read and review.

I was given a free ARC of The King Without a Throne by Jillian Lin. This is part of the Once Upon a Time in China children series. It is an easy to read illustrated historical children book about Confucius. I actually enjoyed this little book that has a fun facts section after the story as well as a quiz. This would be a great enjoyable way for children to learn history!
