Kick, Push (Kick, Push Book 1 / The Road Book 2) Kindle Edition
It lasts only a second.
Two if you're good.
Three if you’re really good.
It’s the moment you’re in the air, your board somewhere beneath you, and nothing but wind surrounds you.
It’s the feeling of being airborne.
The sixteen-year-old version of me would’ve said it was the greatest feeling in the world.
Then at seventeen, I had my son.
And every single second became a defining moment.
Even the ones that consisted of heartbreak when his mother left us.
Seventeen. Single. Dad.
That’s what my life became.
Yet, every day, I managed to find that feeling of being airborne.
Or at least I convinced myself I did.
But I lied—to myself and to everyone around me.
Until she showed up; Tanned skin, raven dark hair, and eyes the color of emeralds.
You know what sucks about being in the air?
Coming down from the high.
Sometimes you land on the board and nail the trick.
Then kick, push, and coast away.
Other times you fall.
You fall hard.
And those are the times when it’s not as easy to get back up, dust off your pads and try again.
Especially when the girl with the emerald eyes becomes your drug...
And you become her poison.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2017Welp. This is gonna be another long review... so grab yourself some wine, popcorn, chocolate, whatever, because I'm about to fangirl all over this book.
This is one of the best books I've ever read and it's, hands down, my absolute favorite Jay McLean novel! I'm a mess right now, honestly I don't even know what the heck my emotions are doing. Jay's stories are never easy to read. They're filled with heartbreak, defeat, anger, grief... just so much, I don't think that I've ever read an author who can bring out emotions the way this writer can. One line from this book sums up my experience with her novels perfectly:
"There's an ache in my chest, not from the beating of my heart, but from the breaking. Still, for some reason, I want more of whatever is causing the pain."
I liken the feeling to the Hulk (Jay McLean's words) smashing Loki (my heart) in the Avengers movie. And yet I'll always come back for more. Because with all of that comes an overwhelming amount of love. This isn't an easy, light read. I don't know why I waited so long, or what I was expecting, but it wasn't this. It had everything I love in a romance: an awkward, slightly shy boy, an extremely messed up girl, an adorable kid, sweet romance, and problems that don't magically disappear with a kiss. This was perfect in every way possible.
The prologue begins with Josh, an expecting father who gets abandoned by his parents once they learn Natalie (his sorta girlfriend?) is pregnant, yet he holds his head up high as he leaves his parents house after telling them the news and them kicking him out. But even with the chaos of his new life, having a child, being without parents himself, and giving up his dream of skating, all at sixteen years old, he never regrets Tommy. Even when Natalie and her parents abandon him as well. He feels utterly alone, defeated, and still, not once does he resent his son. He's an amazing father, willing to do whatever it takes and make any sacrifices he has to.
"There are some sacrifices greater than love. And some loves greater than any sacrifice. Tommy's greater than both."
He treats everything in a very simple matter, everything he does is in an effort to give his son the best life he can.
But no matter how much he loves Tommy, he wants a partner, even if he hadn't always realized it. Not until Becca. He's immediately intrigued, you could almost call it insta-love, but it's not. Some relationships start quickly and burn brightly, and that's exactly what their relationship is. I loved his pursuit of her: using his son to spend time with him, paying Tommy money to find out what she said about him, teaching her how to skate... all of it. But it's not just about how she makes him feel, it's also about making her happy, too.
"I kind of want to share something with you, you know? And maybe next weekend we can do something with your photography?"
I don't know why, but this was so significant for me, the fact that he wanted to immerse her in his world and vice versa. It wasn't just a one-way street. He didn't want one passion to overshadow the other, he wanted to combine their lives equally.
And none of his compliments are "lines," they're all so uniquely Josh. He isn't saying what he says because he wants to be with her, he's saying it just like it's the truth.
"No one's ever said I was beautiful before." - Becca
"Clearly, you're surrounding yourself with either the blind, the stupid, or the pathetic." - Josh
He tells her she's beautiful and special like they're facts.
And Becca, who has had a difficult life, eats up his affection and love.
"Do you have a safe place, Becca?"
"Yes," I whisper. And I hesitate, just for a moment, from telling him the truth. "You."
And for a short while things are perfect, but things that start fast and bright rarely last, as Josh and Becca quickly learn. Because Becca was never meant to stay with him, her plans had always included moving on. And while Josh has been so busy keeping his head up, moving forward, and trying to ignore the sting of all those who've abandoned him: his parents, Tommy's mother, her parents, and even his friend, Hunter, as he began living his own life, he's never dealt with the pain of it all. Of losing his family, his love of skating, his support. And now he must face losing her.
I was confused as to where Josh's rage came from when he fell apart, because he was never an angry person. But I quickly realized that he'd just buried it and became numb to it. And I loved the way Jay wrote it. In the prologue and after thinking Becca was going to leave him, she writes everything methodically, there's no emotion. There's the want for emotion, but none of it is actually there. It's all stated in facts.
My heart broke as he finally snapped, throwing hurtful words at everyone he loves. You'll be angry at Josh, because he does say truly horrible things. But I understood. And I think everyone can see how dangerous it was for him to continue to bottle everything up, because all that's left is pent up frustration. I think he thought that if he ever let himself feel the anger, sadness, loneliness, it would somehow mean he regretted/resented Tommy. But that's just life. All those emotions are a part of it and feeling them doesn't have anything to do with his son. And one of my absolute favorite quotes from this book explains why:
"Our raw imperfections make us real and make us human but they don't make us."
GAH! How does she write so freaking perfectly?! I'm green with envy.
Even though this had both perspectives, it felt like Josh's book. We don't learn much about Becca's past until near the end, and I'm thinking her healing will come out more in the next book, Coast. I know I've said a lot, but I haven't even touched on all the things that happen in this book, and just when I thought I'd read the worst of it, with each new piece of information, my heart cracked more.
It was a difficult read at times, but it was real and raw and so good. It seemed as though they were two people who just met at the wrong time, but I don't believe that. I think they needed to met, to hurt, and to break, in order to finally get better. Josh needed to learn that hurt doesn't take away love, and Becca needed to learn that love doesn't take away hurt. Those feelings are both always there, always possibilities. It's not one or the other.
And even though Josh said hurtful things (echoing pains from her past that he was unaware of) and it resulted in a downward spiral for Becca, I never doubted his love. He always talks about Becca like she is the only one for him and he doesn't want anyone else.
Between the two of them, there is quite a bit going on. The drama is intense and may feel OTT to some, but I loved it. It all weaved together perfectly for me, and despite the feeling of "how can all this happen to one person?" it never felt forced or too much. You just have to be prepared to read something real and heartbreaking and intense.
I don't know how everyone else waited almost a year for the sequel... honestly, I'm dying just from having to stop and write this review. But I don't have to wait! AHAHA! I'm diving in right the heck now ;))

Six Fire Trucks of Awesomeness! Kick Push by Jay McLean is a book you don't want to miss. This book touched my heart in so many ways. This book was wonderful and heartbreaking at the same time. It showcased the very best of life and allowed the very worst. It was very realistic and will hit home with every reader.
Readers briefly met Joshua Warden in Where The Road Takes Me. He was Blake Hunter's best friend. His unusual circumstances, being a single father, added to his wisdom when he became friends with Chloe, Hunter's love interest. Now the readers are going to get Josh Warden's story. Get ready to kick and push.
When Joshua was sixteen he got his girlfriend Natalie pregnant. Rather than taking the easy way out ; both Josh and Natalie chose to have their baby. Joshua's parents were livid and kicked him out of the house. Natalie's parents were indifferent. As long as the baby didn't affect their lives they were okay with it. Neither Josh or Natalie had a clue what having a baby would do to their lives. They had no comprehension of the sleepless nights, the responsibilities of taking care of an infant, or the financial burdens that come along with a baby. Natalie couldn't make the cut, she left one month after their son Tommy was born. She left Joshua to care for their infant son alone. Since Natalie had fled, her parents kicked Josh and baby Tommy to the curb. Joshua is broke and homeless. When his final resources and reserves have finally run out he is at his breaking point. He has lost all hope and fears he will never be able to care for his son the way he should. Then a ray of sunshine beamed in his darkest moments. An old lady named Chazarae showed Joshua and baby Tommy more compassion than anyone had since baby Tommy was born. She gave him a home and she gave him hope. Destiny also set other people in his path to help him with his future. Joshua is finally going to be able to take care of his son and be the father he was meant to be.
Three years later Joshua and Tommy have their lives in order. Josh has a good job, a support network, and a healthy happy son. He may have gave up his dreams of competitive skateboarding. He may not have any social life. What he does have makes all the sacrifices worth it. He has Tommy.
When Chazarae's troubled granddaughter, Becca, comes to live with her; both Josh and Tommy are going to find something they never knew they were missing. Josh will find a friend, a lover, and a soulmate. Tommy will find a special friend and someone that loves him fiercely. These three people will come together and form a beautiful relationship that could lead to becoming a real family. Life is looking like rainbows and sunshine. But before you can have those, you have to weather the storm first. Both Joshua and Becca have not completely weathered their storms. They both have demons. They both have to come to terms with their past. They both have to heal from former relationships and a lifetime of hurts.
Joshua's ex will come back with a vengeance. She will destroy Josh and Becca's relationship. Josh will also have to face the past hurts from his family and friends that turned their backs on him. He will have to get over his trust issues. He will also have to learn to accept that his needs are just as important as his son's.
Becca will have to learn how to become a whole person. She will have to learn about life one baby step at a time. Her future may not be with Joshua and Tommy. Becca will have to learn to love herself before she can love others completely.
Kick Push was beautifully written. It touched upon many emotions. I absolutely adored Joshua. He is a one in a million man. He is a dedicated and loving father that always puts his son's needs first. He sacrificed a lot and gave it his all.
This book ended on an emotional cliffhanger. I am hoping that Josh and Becca will find their true happiness in the next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars So gut!
"Choose to be happy fire truck the rest!"
I've waited 4 month until reading the new book by Jay McLean. I often don't have the courage to start a book right after the release, scared to be disappointed by the authors I love the most.
But Jay never ever disappoints me. It was the first time in months I started reading and couldn't stop until I was at the end at for 4 am.
This story is totally different and like always so full of truth and wisdom and touches every part of my soul (tissues included).
It's so much more than a love story with lovable characters.
It's about Josh- teenage single dad- and his son, about the people around them, about the good sides and the difficulties to be a parent. About the responsibility, the damage you can cause, but even as a caring parent that you can and do mistakes from which you can learn from. It's about the constant love of children to their parents and about forgiveness.
Besides all the happy and sad truths one is certain: with love and friendship together you can go through a lot, because life is good!
"Choose to be happy, fire truck the rest."

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!!!
Wow!!! This book will put your emotions through the ringer. You will fall in love with Josh, Tommy and Becca!!
Josh a teenager himself is just trying to raise his son to the best of his ability and for 3 years he does this all on his own. He chooses to give up his chances of a pro skating career in order to raise Tommy on his own. Tommy is quite simply the sweetest most adorable boy ever!!!! He has help from some great friends and you can see when Becca comes into their lives that they have an amazing connection. Of course things never run that smoothly and when Tommy's mother comes back into the picture .... it all goes badly.
Jay has written such a beautiful and yet heartbreaking story that is beyond memorable. This book will take you on a journey that will ultimately make you FEEL!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING!!!
Jay McLean is the only author who can make me laugh, cry and feel all within the same sentence. She doesn't just write a book to keep people happy, she writes a book because it's her! It is in her heart and soul, and you feel exactly this with every book, page, chapter and sentence she writes.
Kick, Push isn't just any ordinary romance novel. It is an experience, a journey and such a complex story that will stay with you forever.
We were introduced to Josh Warden in Where The Road Takes Me and I immediately felt drawn to his character and his story. So when Jay gave the word of his book, I just knew it was going to be something outstanding.
But what I actually read was something so real and so sensitive, that slams its way into your heart, making it one of those forever reads. One of those books that you know you will always think about and a story you will hold onto weeks after reading.
From the very beginning of this story, you feel the struggle that Josh goes through. A single teen Dad who wants nothing but the best for his son, forgetting himself and his own happiness just to ensure that he can give the world to his boy, Tommy. It's an act so selfless that many people will be able to connect and relate to. And just when Josh thinks that he has reached the lowest point, he is offered solace, a new beginning and a chance to better himself and Tommy. When he finds himself coasting on the straight and narrow, he meets Becca.
Becca is without a doubt the most complex heroine I have had the pleasure of reading. She is such an outstanding beauty on the inside as well as the out and her story really is something so devastating, it captures you and you just want to do everything to heal this girl with the emerald eyes.
In true McLean fashion, she always manages to bring the humour. Tommy was that emotion for me. He was refreshing and brought the light into this story.
I won't spoil the story, I won't tell you what happens. This story needs to be read, felt and experienced by each reader on a personal level, because the array of emotions, the story and its depth will just own you.
Jay McLean has written something quite simply......SPECTACULAR. This is without a doubt her best writing to date.

5.0 out of 5 stars in LOVE with Kick, Push.
I finished „Kick, Push.“ a few days ago and I'm still at a loss for words besides
I LOVE IT. LOVE IT. LOVE IT.
It is one of those books I wish I could go back in time only to read it for the first time all over again.
This my FAVORITE Jay McLean book <3
(#1 shared with „More than this“ which will always have a special place in my heart)
Since I knew Josh was getting his own book, I was totally looking forward for his story
but I DID NOT expect to LOVE it so firetrucking much.
I'd rate it 10 stars if I could.
Josh, Tommy and Becca just pushed all the right buttons for me
their story made me feel so much
I LOVE this emotional journey more than enough to overlook the cliffhanger, which I am (like many others) normally not a fan of, but a rushed ending would have been so much worse.
Now I'm glad and very happy that we'll get to read MORE about Josh, Tommy and Becca and their journey to HEA *fingers crossed*
