Tides (Time of Myths: Shapeshifter Sagas Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 29 ratings

The legends are wrong—mythological creatures are real, but they’re not what you've always been told. Get lost in history with these strong female leads and their sexy alpha shifters to discover the truth behind the myths.

It’s Leif’s eighth summer going viking with his father on their ship the Kraken—and he’s had enough. For as long as Leif can remember, his father has claimed to be a descendant of Ægir, god of the sea, and has exploited their shape changing ability—all this to amass enough gold to gain entrance into the ocean god’s halls. Leif hopes that time’s drawing near so he can free himself from Ragna’s domineering shadow.

On the green hills of Éire, Eilish is content learning traditional folk cures from her father until a Finn-Gall raid disturbs the peace. Desperate to protect Eilish from harm, her father cuts her hair and disguises her in his old clothing before she’s ripped from the only home she’s ever known. Sold as a thrall in Duiblinn, she must hide out as a young man on a ship full of barbarians.

Now Eilish, who fears she’ll become Ægir’s next sacrifice, and Leif, who isn’t prepared to stand up against his father’s powerful wrath, must face the tides of change—no matter how ominous they may seem.

After reading and absolutely loving book 1 in this Time of Myths series - Scars I could not wait to get my hands on this one. Tides sees up delve into the world of Leif, who is working on his eight season aboard his fathers ship the Kraken - now with a title like Tides and a boat named Kraken I could only imagine what kind so shape shifting creature we would be met with in this story, and I wasn't all wrong, however I didn't expect the story to play as it did - and I mean that in a good way.

Leif is the shifter and though we see him change in to large sea bird for most of the story, the true reason behind him being on the Kraken with his father emerges, and it is a dark and sinister motive on his father Ragnar part to keep his son doing his bidding. You have probably hears the stories of the Kraken on the sea, and in terms of the lore I absolutely loved this take on the tale - I really don;t want to give to much away, but I am sure you can guess - or not like I did.

Whilst Leif and his father are in Duiblinn he comes across a thrall - or slave - whom he buys much to the chagrin of his father who has no hopes of the thrall lasting on the sea, little does Leif know that he has purchased a young woman named Eilish, who was captured during a Finn-Gall raid, and was forced by her father to dress as boy and go by the name of Aiden in order to survive as he did not want the fate of slave women to fall on to her. Soon both their secrets are discovered by each other and Leif has fallen for Eilish and does everything in his power to help protect her from his father.

This was yet another fantastic read from Ms Brown and what I love most apart from the story is Natasha's ability to transport you back in time, with her attention to detail, mythology, lore and fantastic research! I can only imagine what she has in store for us next and I for one can't wait!

I chose to read this book after receiving a free e-copy. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

I don't read a lot of romances but Tides has a lot more than romance in it. It is historical fiction with a touch of fantasy and a touch of romance.

The Finn-Gall for the most part seem to be a horrible people but it could be just the view I had of them from this book. Leif's father, uncle, and cousins are all violent men with nothing but wealth and women on their minds (depending on the person). The Finn-Gall are also responsible for raiding Eilish's village and taking Eilish and her father to sell as slaves.

Leif seems to be an exception to the typical Finn-Gall. He actually cares what happens to others, even those not in his family. He only stays with his father out of fear that he will kill Leif's only true friend if Leif tries to leave. His father only wants to keep him around because of the power he has to transform into other beings. Leif's power helps his father raid other ships. I like Leif's character for the most part. It's hard to believe that such a good man will do his father's bidding for so many years without finding a way to get himself and his friend, Agnos, safely away.

Eilish has been taught healing by her father which helps her along the way. She is pretending to be a man at her father's request so that these barbarians won't take advantage of her. Her only desire is to find a way to escape and find her father. Eilish is a likable character as she is brave and stubborn enough to continue living.

I like Natasha S. Brown's writing style. It does get a little too descriptive of surroundings at times and I skipped a paragraph here and there but that's just my personal preference.

I definitely recommend Tides especially if you like historical romance with a touch of fantasy.

Another spellbinding read from the Shapeshifter Sagas, having loved the first book, Scars, so much I couldn't wait to start this new story. The descriptions and research that has obviously been undertaken by the author brought this Viking story to life, at times I felt that I was actually seeing the story being played out in front of me rather than reading from the pages. The characters, good and bad, really stood out bringing out emotion as you followed them.

The authors writing, yet again, captured my imagination from the start as Eilish and her father were awoken by screams heard nearby and were forcibly taken and captured as slaves, or thralls as they were called, to be sold to the highest bidder at the slave market. Her fathers quick thinking knowing of the Viking reputation and desperate to keep his daughter as safe as she could possibly be, cut off her long hair into a shaggy boys cut and told her that her life depended on her being taken as a boy. Now harrowingly separated from her father Eilish caught the eye of Leif, the Viking son of Ragna, who felt sorry for the weak looking slave and was bought to be used as a deckhand on their ship, the Kraken, unbeknownst to him that she was actually a girl.

Leif lived almost as a prisoner himself under his fathers hatred who's only concern was to amass enough treasure to be accepted by AEgir, the god of the sea. His only worth to his father was his shapeshifting abilities while they were constantly at sea raiding. The question is will Eilish be able to keep her secret and stay alive under such gruelling conditions and vicious Viking captors and will Leif ever be free of his fathers invisible chains? How will fate play out for both of these loveable characters?

This is definitely an addictive series to read, each story so far has been completely different and I loved them both, highly anticipating the next book release!
