A Soul To Keep (Boys Of Lake Cliff) Kindle Edition
“Scream, you stupid American bear.”
Night after terrifying night, Captain Denver Walsh returns to the compound in Dubai where Al Qaeda terrorists tortured him. Night after night, he relives the terror and pain and wakes up haunted by a ghost from his past. Numerous surgeries and years of physical and psychiatric therapy have failed to fix our brave soldier and hacker and he’s perilously close to breaking.
“Alone is why you almost killed yourself and that’s what’s going to kill you.”
Denver might be an admirable yet occasionally stupid brand of stubborn but Dr. Ezra Gabriel is about to teach him a few lessons in patience and perseverance. Gifted, charming and just about as stubborn, the young doctor won’t let Denver give up, then finds he can’t let the brilliant, gentle, battle-scarred veteran go.
An incident involving a monster of a trout causes two friends to slip and slide into a predicament neither saw coming. One of them loses their head and two hearts find the same steady beat as dreams change and merge with reality.
This is a standalone love story but features characters from The Boys of Lake Cliff series. You do not need to have read the series to enjoy A Soul To Keep.
Warning: A Soul To Keep explores extremely difficult topics such as suicide and PTSD and includes scenes involving violent acts of torture.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI absolutely loved this book. But I admit it was a full Kleenex box book for me. Not only was it a terrific read, characters and story gripping and compelling, but it cut close to home for me. I adore K. Sterling for a number of reasons, but the #1 is that she writes about REAL issues of today in a way that is touching, compassionate, entertaining, and REAL. Several family members, including my dad, fought in Vietnam. None came back unscathed. My mom's older brother was hit the "hardest". PTSD wasn't a recognized diagnosis until after the first gulf war. And even then it really wasn't understood or accepted by most. When my uncle came home he was "different" . You didn't want to say "shell shocked" which was the term used at that point, and as a tough Chicago boy you didn't admit to the nightmares, or anything else that the war left you with. You came home and did the best you could. He wasn't exactly like Ed, but like so many of our returning soldiers from that era, self -medicated, with alcohol, or what you will, and went on the best they could. K.'s description of PTSD and how generations of our military have suffered is so deftly handled that while the story is a wonderful love story, I was most impressed by how she treated the continuing issue of psychiatric care for our most deserving of heroes, our fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, and families in U.S. Armed forces. Here's hoping this care continues to improve with every voice that speaks out.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseTo me a book is a great read when it obligates me to engage from beginning to end, no skipping. This K. Sterling series does that for me; I can see the story developing in my mind’s eye, the interactions and dialogues between the MCs and with the SCs, the descriptions of their surroundings, the plot must capture me, the unravelling of everything, leading up to their HEA and an epilogue is always welcome. This one in the series is equally a winner. 🩷
- Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI was anxiously awaiting Denver and Ezra's story and K. Sterling provided exactly what I needed.
We met both Denver and Ezra while reading about the Lake Cliff "boys" and you just couldn't help falling in love with these two. This is a tough story in parts, especially when Denver flashes back during his PTSD episodes. The interactions between Ezra and Denver were very well written: touching, emotional, funny and definitely sexy. Was it borderline unethical for Ezra to become romantically involved with Denver while being his therapist? Yes. But it is a fictional story and I believe it was written in good taste. They both were familiar with that line in the sand, fought it, but in the end realized what the other person meant to them. Life happens and sometimes decisions are made that go against someone's "moral" code. So what...…..it's a book! Ezra and Denver met because of mutual friends and Ezra was asked to help a suicidal Denver, off the books so to speak. I didn't get a unethical doctor vibe here.
It was amazing how Denver pushed himself up through the mind games and worked towards becoming a healthier and happier person, with Ezra's help. This is a wonderful feel-good story. I highly recommend reading the Lake Cliff series first as there are characters that pop up in this one and it will be the book much more enjoyable. Can I just say that I would love to see an interaction between Aiden and Ezra's mother!
Thanks again to my automatic 1-click K. Sterling. You know how to write a great book and you never disappoint me. Keep up the excellent story telling, because as usual, I'll be waiting.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI was really excited to read Denver and Ezra's story and I wasn't disappointed. Denver is a wounded suicidal veteran and Ezra is the psychologist who is there to help him. We met Denver and Ezra in a previous Lake Cliff book, and where I would usually say you should read the other books in the Lake Cliff universe to understand the history and plots - that is not the case with this story. Although reading the other books would certainly be helpful you can pick this book up as a standalone read.
Both characters are genuine and caring and willing to put in the work to help Denver.
I really appreciated how K had Ezra work on Denver's issues before any sexy times happened (there are sexy times and they are hot). Ezra is a sexy quirky nerd who truly understands and wants to help Denver, and Denver is a man who needs someone see him and be there for him. Their love story is sweet and caring and joyful.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is a heartbreaking story of a story of a man who loved and served his country. Denver came back from being tortured, broken and feeling better off alone or gone. The ones who loved him couldn’t help him but gave him over to Ezra, a young man who had studied and helped soldiers lost to PTSD. Ezra was so attracted to Denver but knew he had to help him professionally not romantically.
This is a part of the story that so many of our young men and women come back from serving our country to end up with PTSD and either try or succeed in suicide. This is our reality. Denver experienced his reality in his nightmares of what he lived. I thought that this was a good story about Denver and Ezra but I didn’t think that it was a stand alone because it needed at least the previous book, In The Wind, to give better context, thus the 4⭐️s.
I received an ARC and voluntarily give this review. I also purchased this story because K. Sterling is awesome and writes such great stories!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI absolutely loved The Boys of Lake Cliff and this is a character of their world. I also want to say the audible books to that series was done spectacularly by Mr Sterling. This book shows us Denver’s back story and the road he travels with Dr Ezra who was introduced during the latest Boys of Lake Cliff book. It was terrific. I have to say I do like the action of the other books a bit better but this book was very important in its own right by bringing PTSD into the light for an in depth look. I appreciated what I learned. Keep them coming Mrs Sterling.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking and lighthearted at the same time
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis book set in Mr. Lavender and Aiden’s world had some cameos but it mostly dealt with Denver and Ezra.
Denver has wicked awful PTSD and Ezra is the therapist determined to help the man.
This book is descriptive in graphic ways as Denver deals with what happened to him in Dubai. It was definitely squeamish but it made you pause and think about what could have happened.
I was absorbed in the story.
The author managed to make a hard and difficult subject into a surprisingly adorable story. I think it’s Ezra. He’s just a character. He’s both surprisingly smart and incredibly goofy. He understands the problems Denver faces and he finds the best way for Denver to help.
Their road to love is filled with bumps as Ezra works through the ethics of falling for his client.
A thoroughly enjoyable read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another 5 stars for K Sterling
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI just knew I was going to love these two when they met in the latest Boys of Lake Cliff installment and I was not disappointed. Ezra and Denver had instant chemistry but things were complicated by their patient \ therapist relationship. The book handles the torture scenes sensitively and the steps to Denver's recovery seemed realistic (if not a little rushed for the sake of the storyline). It was lovely getting to know these two a little better and to see their relationship grow.Another 5 stars for K Sterling.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseUnfortunately while this book states it's a stand alone and it can be enjoyed without having read the Lake Cliff series I didn't feel that was true. From page one I felt like I was missing something, our introduction to Ezra and Denver was non-existent, they'd already formed a bond during a three day event i wasn't privy too (because I haven't read the Lake Cliff series I'm guessing) and from then on I felt a tad mystified by their relationship. The whole unfolding of their relationship was a mess, I'm not sure if that's down to the author's jumpy writing style or not but for me I just wasn't a fan. I was disappointed with the way the recovery of the PTSD was handled also, it felt a bit like a miracle cure, one day he's endlessly crippled by his reoccurring nightmare and then one intense therapy session later his fixed? It wasn't believable and it mostly just frustrated me. Unfortunately not a book I'm likely to remember at all.
