The Reprobation Series Book 4.
When a body is found crucified on a Liverpool beach, Calvinist nun and eschatology lecturer Dr. Helen Hope forms an unlikely alliance with suspect Mikko Kristensen, lead guitarist in death metal band Total Depravity.
I really enjoyed this book. I loved the cover. I will be looking at the first 3 books next. I still enjoyed it though. Read in one sitting. 5*.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb - thrilling, eye-opening and thought provoking!
This story starts a few months after the end of book 3. Darren and Swiss footballer Thomas Kuper are now a couple after the death of Justine, although they are still keeping the relationship under wraps from the public. After all the gruelling events that have surrounded him recently, Darren has taken a sabbatical from the police and is studying for a theology degree. Dr Helen Hope remains a lecturer at the same university and Mikko Kristensen is still front man of death metal band Total Depravity, who incidentally have been invited to play at a Christian music festival. That will be interesting! First the Wild Woman of Blundellsands is discovered hiding out in a WW2 bunker and then in a dried-up eel pond in Sniggery Woods a mass of skeletons is found, an apparent chain of bodies dating from the seventeenth century. Could there be a link between these two events and more sinisterly, is an age-old practice still being performed today? And who has recently moved the bones and why? Darren can’t help being curious, the detective in him still wanting answers, and is joined in the search by Helen and Mikko, with help on the side from the lovely DS Colette Quinn. A secret society perhaps, they wonder? After all, Liverpool used to be teeming with them. Then things take a more deadly turn. And still lurking in the background is Andrew Shepherd, watching over baby Elizabeth, the child that he fathered in the most awful and bizarre manner.
The author’s ability to introduce the reader to a new (for me) and completely fascinating topic is superb. This time it’s the existence over the centuries of anchoresses and anchorites, volunteers for a living death to become martyrs and saints. When reading this series I always seem to learn a lot along the way whilst enjoying a really original story that is altogether thrilling, eye-opening and thought provoking without it ever feeling too academic, and once again it’s clear this author has really done her research. I will say, I don’t like seeing these books being described as “supernatural thrillers” which to me makes them sound a little lightweight and full of ghosties, and they really are so much more. They may have some other worldly views and beliefs which colour their often chilling behaviour but believe me, most of the characters are most definitely flesh and blood. I would certainly recommend reading these stories in order to get the most of the continuing intertwined histories, and I do hope there will be more!!

4.0 out of 5 stars interesting read
It was not my usual type of book, but I did enjoy the story. I felt for Darren alot, all he wanted was to be loved and to feel apart of the world. I wished Thomas was kinder to him. I liked Helen, she was quite the stalker and go-getter of the story (especially with the monks and Owen). She and Mikka (was it mikka) are a good couple, they bounce of each other well. I liked the banter between all of the characters, too. I also felt sorry for Diane, all that time, and then poof.(If you've read it, you'll know) Overall, it was a good read. I might have to read books 1-3 to fully understand the characters better. My only downfall was that it had a lot to do with religion and god, whilst I understand why the plot needed it.. it was just a bit overwhelming for me as an atheist.

Review
Wow, what a way to wrap up the series! Despite taking a sabattical D.I Darren Swift can’t seem to give up the ghost. When a ‘mad’ woman is discovered living wild in the Blundellsands Dunes and a burial of skeletons dating back centuries he can’t help but be drawn to the case. Reuniting with Dr Helen Hope and her heavy metal musician Mikko Kristensen the trio delve deeper and find themselves in a world of secret societies, private clubs and religious orders.
This one really kept me hooked so much so I finished it in one sitting. I loved how all the aspects of the previous novels made more sense and we got to see the bigger picture of all that has happened. On top of this I loved seeing how the characters continued to progress. I hate spoilers as you know but it was interesting to see the completion of their journey’s in some aspects and the start of new ones as well.
Once again the writing is top teir. Fearns manages to blend science, myths, history, geography and religion and create something that is not only gripping but believable! Add to this a cast of memorable and interesting characters and you have an amazing novel that is hard to put down. I am not one for religion but fully enjoyed seeing how the religious texts and quotes helped tell the story. The other thing I adore is due to Fearns excellence at character-driven stories you get to feel like you have gone on the journey with the characters, at least I did. At one point I was wanting to shake Helen for some thoughts she was having, although it did make sense! So it’s safe to say I was very invested.
Despite Sound potentially being my favourite I loved how Lamb of God tied everything together and set the characters on new paths and adventures. I really do hope we see Helen, Darren and Mikko again in the future but if we don’t I feel that Fearns did them more than enjoy justice in this novel and the previous three.

5.0 out of 5 stars So, so good!
My Thoughts: I have absolutely adored this series and book 4 was no different, like the other 3 this one was a one sitting read for me, it was lovely to be back with my bunch of misfits that seem to work when you put them together even though everything in you tells you they shouldn’t, where else could you get a DI, a sister and a heavy metal musician solving crimes together?!
This one was a little different to the rest as they’re not all together, but a woman found living in the wild and a pile of mismatched bones some dating back centuries brings them all back in and doing what they do best!
As always things aren’t straight forward and they find themselves delving deeper into a part of society that we know exists but isn’t necessarily shouted about.
Full of wit, banter and sarcasm all tied together with the occasional reference to religion, it was creepy yet fun and exciting to read!
Already looking forward (and hoping) to the next instalment!

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling fourth book
Another brilliant addition to the Reprobation series! Catherine Fearns returns to the intertwined lives of Darren and Helen as they delve into the underworld of Liverpool’s secret societies to solve what appears to be a disturbing kidnapping case. Fans of the first three books will love the fourth instalment of the series.
