The Least Among Them: 29 Players, Their Brief Moments in the Big Leagues, and a Unique History of the New York Yankees Kindle Edition
"This charming and meticulously researched book will remind you of baseball's power to change and enrich lives far beyond the diamond." – Jonathan Eig
The Least Among Them is a most special baseball book that looks at the New York Yankees history in an original, unique, and never before written manner. Throughout their history, the New York Yankees have been defined by the legends and the successes of their most famous players. But, as part of their long history, the Yankees have also fielded players that have become lost to history. This book is those players' story, telling the unique histories of the men whose entire major league baseball career lasted but a single game with that game being played as a New York Yankee. While these players may be forgotten, their stories are compelling. Filled with a unique Yankee history, single game stats, and a love of baseball, The Least Among Them tells the story of baseball's most successful franchise in an entirely new way.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 16, 2022My first thought in beginning this book was to recall a line from the movie Major League: "Who are these guys?" But as I read further, I realized that the real essence of the book was a celebration of failure in the same way that baseball itself celebrates failure -- and of those who are able, if only momentarily, to overcome it. Most fans appreciate those players who manage to hit the ball safely a mere three times out of ten or happen to be standing in the spot where they cannot avoid catching a game-ending screamer. Semendinger appreciates the simple act of making it to the highest level, The Show, even for the briefest of moments. Not every man who plays the game professionally will make it to the Majors, but for the author an everyman can. And in that fleeting moment, each of his subjects experiences both success and failure -- in a single act.
For Yankees fans, this collection of vignettes will stir some memories and start some intergenerational conversations. For the rest of us, it is a reminder of the subtle dynamics of the game, of the unending clash between hope and despair. Perhaps the most telling lesson of the book is the fact, recounted in case after case, that every one of these men reached the pinnacle of his dreams, lost his grip on the peak, but stayed in the game, hoping against hope to climb that mountain one more time. Still, each could say, in the words of Crash Davis in the movie Bull Durham, "Yeah, I was in The Show."
- Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2021A great line from the movie Rambo II is when Charles Napier is talking to Richard Crenna and asks if anyone cares about a bunch of forgotten ghosts. Crenna replies, "Men, [gosh darnit]".
That dialogue captures this book perfectly. The players in the book may be people you have never heard of before. It's not Mantle, or Jeter, or anyone else. It's players that played a game, an at bat, etc, but had a role in establishing the franchise as one of the best.
The writing is superb and each little story is succinct and enjoyable to read.
Pick up the book and learn about these "ghosts".
- Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2021this book has a unique concept, a number of players for the Yankees who played one major league game ( l wish someone had written similar books for other teams) This book had me googling what happened to these players afterwards The book also has lots of Yankee historical lore. Well worth it
- Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2024Without this book, many of these players would remain anonymous. This book shows the reader how hard it is to become a major league, baseball player, and how interesting the stories of those who only played one game are.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2022For someone who’s a baseball nut like myself, you’ll enjoy the story of each player. I’d love a book of noting but obscure players.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2022If you are deep into the history of the Yankees, you'll want to read this book. It's well-researched and has biographical content you won't find anywhere else.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2021Not the stars, but Yankees whose big league careers lasted exactly one game. An interesting look at these "one game wonders". Well researched and written.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2021Even die-hard Yankee fans aren't familiar with Charles Fallon, Honey Barnes, Homer Thompson, Elvio Jiminez, Christian Parker and Sam Marsonek. After all, they are 6 of 29 players whose entire major league career consisted of one game with the New York Yankees.
Author Paul Semendinger cleverly unravels New York Yankees history by pulling on the string of these 29 unique players. While telling their unknown stories, he finds connections with other Yankees and events.
Besides presenting a profile of each of the 29 players, Semendinger includes an Extra Innings feature with each player. Here, he often makes a connection with past Yankees and history. For example, pitcher Christian Parker appeared in one game for the 2001 Yankees. Since he was a graduate of Notre Dame, Semendinger connects him with Carl Yastrzemski, who once almost became a Yankee. Since Rugger Ardizoia, who appeared in one game with the 1947 club, was born in Italy, Semendinger's Extra Innings feature focuses on other Yankees born in Europe.
The Least Among Them is a delightful journey into the past of baseball's most hallowed franchise.
