About the author

Carolyn Ruffles is the author of both contemporary and historical fiction laced with mystery, romance and suspense. She loves reading books which tell a compelling story: books with drama and emotional depth; books which keep her reading late into the night and then have a satisfying ending. That is what she strives to write. She is also fascinated by human interest stories – ordinary people embroiled in extraordinary situations and learning about themselves in the process.
Having retired from teaching, she wrote her first book, The Girl in the Scrapbook, which was published in November, 2018. Who To Trust, followed in March 2020 and The Vanishing Encore is her third novel. If you wish to find out more about her and her books, she has a website https://carolynrufflesauthor.com. By signing up to her readers’ list, you will receive the link to a free short story, Memories Forgotten, about a subject very close to her heart.
Carolyn lives in Norfolk with her husband Mark. When she is not reading or writing, she loves dog walking, playing badminton, gardening (in moderation – no weeding and a little light pruning is her preference) and looking after her two beautiful grandsons. She also loves spending time with family and friends, especially if there’s a glass of wine involved!

- Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2024The Lightbody Bequest (The Lightbody Mystery series Book 2), by Carolyn Ruffles, continued the story of the successful woman accused of witchcraft because of a curse from the 1600s after another dead body was discovered in the lake.
I began reading this book immediately after Book 1 because the author is a fantastic storyteller and I couldn't put the book(s) down. An excellent read!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 2024In The Lightbody Bequest, Carolyn Ruffles continues her two-fold stories: one historical, the other contemporary, yet they blend well. In the mid-1600s, Martha continues her search for safety from the Holley family, while in the 21st Century, the Holley descendants continue their assumed legacy, that of destroying the witch's current identity, and, thereby, ending the curse. Ms. Ruffles ties up the various threads, giving readers a complete picture of the curse that lasted four hundred years. The Lightbody Bequest completes the series; however, readers can look forward to more books by Ms. Ruffles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
This was the finale of the Lightbody mystery duology, a follow up to the Lightbody Legacy and it certainly lived up to the high expectations that I already had!
It was gripping from the word go, with all the answers to the questions I still had from book one. All the same wonderful characters bring this book to a brilliant dramatic conclusion.
I read this book in record time as I was just so excited to find out the next instalment. All of Carolyn’s 5 books to date have been beautifully written and fantastic to read, I would highly recommend all of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a triumph!
‘The Lightbody Bequest’ - what a triumph! Thank you, Carolyn, for giving us such an enthralling sequel to ‘The Lightbody Legacy’. As soon as I began to read this book, I knew it was going to be very hard to put down but I didn’t realise just how hard! I read long into the night and only stopped when I just couldn’t keep my eyes open any longer. Once again, Carolyn has written so cleverly and has created a brilliant page-turner. The attention to detail and the meticulous research have both continued from the first book in the series, all adding to the layers of the intriguing plot. The realistic characters came alive in the first novel but have been developed so much more in this story that you feel as if you might just bump into them! The interweaving of the modern story with ‘The Life and Times of Martha Lightbody’ – such an interesting and heart-wrenching story in its own right – takes the reader on a real emotional journey from shock and horror to humour and wit. This book is at one and the same time completely intriguing, heart-warming and fun and wonderfully written. It’s a definite ‘must read’! Very well done, Carolyn!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fastly becoming one of my favourite authors
The Lightbody Legacy left questions unanswered and I for one was waiting and wondering who did or will survive the Wickthorpe curse.
The author knows how to describe a setting and craft characters. They spring off the page as if they are in front of you. It's not the norm for the MC to be my favourite in a book but this one is.
I felt protective of Deborah Ryecroft and Martha Lightbody (not an easy thing to achieve). The twists and turns continue as each timeline shows possibilities.
I have aphantasia - I can't conjure images in my head so writers have to work harder to get me to be in the book and keep me there. As with the first I kept trying to work out what might happen - the characters would arrive in my mind unbidden.
I doff my hat to the author - obviously I will be reading more by her.

4.0 out of 5 stars A tense, pacy read
A year on from the tragic events in Wickthorpe, not a lot has changed. Old hatreds and suspicions still run deep, with the nasty piece of work Enid Green manipulating those she can into wreaking vengeance on Deborah Ryecroft. Enid is certain Deborah is the latest incarnation of the Wickthorpe Witch and carries the curse spoken by Martha Lightbody 400 years ago as she prepared to be drowned as a witch.
When a book written by a descendant of Martha’s 200 years after her death surfaces, Deborah is fascinated to find out what purportedly happened. Did Martha survive the attempted drowning? And where did she escape to? Did she ever find peace, a life free from persecution?
But Deborah isn’t the only one with a copy of the book, and not all of them are sympathetic to Martha – or to Deborah.
Another body found in Deep Water Lake is more than enough motivation to get Enid’s nasty little plots bubbling furiously. As she reels in her allies – some reluctant, others with their own motives -tensions mount. My heart was in my mouth wondering how – or even if – the author was going to get her heroine out of this one!
Following Martha’s story as written by her descendant also gave me a great deal of anxiety. Her enemies were resourceful and determined, and the author leaves us wondering until quite late in the day what did happen to her and her family. No spoilers!
In The Lightbody Bequest we have the same highly defined characters as in the first book, with my favourite, Honoraria, making a strong and entertaining appearance. Honoraria is also one of several characters who provide us with excellent subplots, which serve to give the reader some light relief between the harrowing episodes of the main story.
Detailed plotting, a brilliant sense of pacing, and the ability to cause the reader to hold their breath waiting … all make The Lightbody Bequest a thoroughly enjoyable read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant novel.
Once I started this novel I struggled to put it down. I read it in four sessions, reading long past my bedtime. The way it is written as a book within a book
is very clever, ensuring the reader is drawn in and wants to read more to discover how it will end. I couldnt put it down but now I've read it I cant wait gor Carolyn's next book. Make it soon please!
