My feelings toward LITTLE FAVORS in a single word: obsessed

A must-read if you love dark stories with messy queer characters dealing with generational trauma and toxic societal pressures. And for hardcore fans of the romance genre who might be wondering if this book actually qualifies as a romance, I can confirm that this DOES have a HEA/HFN ending. Lots of tough subjects to digest so I highly recommend checking the included content warnings list beforehand if you have any concerns!

Back to my thoughts: I've read this book 3 times now and I am still reeling from it. The prose is beautiful, and the journey the characters go through is deliciously heart-wrenching. I had to stop reading several times because my chest HURT but in such an amazing way. There's a chapter that gives me chills every time I read it. For fans of the hurt/comfort trope, this story will scratch that itch to the point that once it's over, you can't help but want to start back at the beginning again.

I received an ARC of the book in exchange for my honest review. I was also a beta reader for an earlier draft.

I think this was a bit too plot-forward (though the climax was a bit, well, anti-climactic) for my tastes to like it more than I did, but I am very glad I read it!

A significant part of what I enjoyed so much about it is that it's such an unusual, refreshing, and interesting contribution to the mafia romance subgenre. Besides the fact that it features an all-Asian cast (the 3 MCs are Chinese) and written by an AAPI author - both of which are uncommon enough in the subgenre - Graves includes a fair amount of footnotes and translations re: foods, nicknames, terms of endearments, and the like that build an immersive experience. And as a former organizational scholar, I loved the family business setting and the peek into succession politics and (a corrupted version of) guanxi. Tonally, it gives me similar vibes as Fonda Lee's Green Bone Saga, if it were a contemporary romance. Which makes sense cause the GBS gives major Godfather vibes.

I will definitely be interested in reading Graves' future books!

It's almost difficult to believe this is someone's debut novel. It's extremely well-written, nuanced, tragic, sexy, terrifying, and filled with moments of warmth.
Adik Graves redefines the hurt/comfort trope with his work, and it is breathtaking.
If you're looking for your next read, this should definitely be it.

Adik Graves weaves a wonderful story filled with drama, sex, and interesting characters. The term "literary genius" is thrown around too often, but in this instance I think it fits.

I’m going to start off by saying that Liu Xiaokai is a precious baby who has never done anything wrong ever and deserves the world. Instead, he’s stuck in a horrible, twisted story that is equal parts intriguing and heartbreaking. I can't even begin to describe the absolute rollercoaster of emotions this book took me on. All I could do was keep reading and hang on for dear life. Book 2 when??

I’ll start off by saying I don’t usually read. It takes a lot for me to actually be interested in reading a book let alone finishing it. This book was an exception. It was interesting and well written and just pulls you in where you feel like you’re in the story itself. Something was always happening, there was not a single page that didn’t catch me off guard or surprise me. I loved every minute of it!

I love this book. It's gritty and messy and at the same time beautifully written. I love the depth of the characters and their place in the story. It definitely has some tough themes, though. I also really like that book is not formulaic. I feel this is a book you can re-read and find things you missed the previous time(s). I definitely recommend this book!
I was given an advanced copy. This review is freely and honestly given.

A page turner of complex flawed characters, intrigue, abuse, family secrets, and revenge. And surprisingly, love. I couldn’t put it down! the unexpected twists in the relationships of the three main characters and the end was beautifully satisfying.
