The Scar that won't Heal: Trauma and Unresolved Emotion in Chronic Disease (Mindbody Connection) Paperback – October 4, 2015
Purchase options and add-ons
Do you want to reverse your fatigue symptoms and reclaim your energy and vitality for life?
According to the CDC up to 2.5 million Americans are suffering from a chronic fatigue condition (that’s around 1 in 131 people!) and it’s increasing year upon year. We live in a world where the numbers of people suffering anxiety, fatigue, digestive issues, auto-immune conditions and various unexplained chronic diseases (including long covid) are beginning to bankrupt our health systems.
What on earth is going on?
This ground-breaking book, written by an award-winning practitioner, demystifies the many and varied symptoms of stress, trauma and unresolved emotion in the mind and body, filling the knowledge gap. Based on 25 years of research and practice, it describes the latest research on the stress response and how it interacts with a sensitized brain.
In this book you will discover:
- What is the biggest but largely unknown determinant of health and longevity – by far
- Why modern medicine ignores this and concentrates on symptom alleviation
- How you got here – the past is always present in your back brain
- Why the stress response gets wired for threat so that it gets stuck
- What tiny cellular component causes the sabotage of your energy producing machinery
- What simple steps you can follow to reverse that program
What I found out during that time was to become my life’s work. As a university scientific researcher, I had the training and access to resources most people don’t. And what I discovered, I have distilled down into the information presented here.
Emotional trauma from early life experience activates an ancient system to be hyper-aroused to the world around it. Anything that then triggers the same emotion in later life activates this survival system giving us anxiety, fatigue and/ or chronic pain.
Trauma is Common
My contention, born out of study of the scientific literature and my own experience, is that emotions are not just psychological experiences; they are physiological regulators. And any experience in a state of helplessness is perceived by the body as a trauma - so very few people escape a childhood without some.
But it is the interaction with particular highly sensitive personalities that determines whether traumatic memory formation becomes encoded and whether it becomes triggered into chronic symptoms in later life via epigenetics – environment plus genes.
I lift the lid on how the mind creates the symptoms largely through the downregulation of the energy producing mitochondria in your cells. I show the fascinating truth behind this amazingly ancient process, meant to protect us when our stresses were very different to the ones we have today.
Many books have been written on this subject from either a scientific or clinical point of view, but this book unifies theory and practice towards a new understanding of chronic illness. I also show you, with practical examples, how to overcome these issues using a variety of new body-based (somatic) therapies to change these subconscious programmes. I firmly believe everyone can heal and I show you how you can too!
Now updated for 2022 with new research and a fully cross-referenced index.

About the author

Hi I'm Patricia Worby, PhD, a somatic psychotherapist interested in all aspects of psychology, natural medicine and science. I bring my past experience as a former scientist, clinical researcher**, and now specialist practitioner in chronic illness to bear on every subject I write about.
A child of the 1970's from a 'normally dysfunctional' family, I found solace in education, being the first in my family to go to university where I studied biochemistry, the science of life. But life seemed strangely absent from the information I received and, after a series of health challenges in my 30's and 40's (including depression and chronic fatigue) brought about, I now know, by the unresolved grief from the death of my father when still i my teens, I was compelled to find my own answers.
I studied hypnotherapy, psychology, and natural medicine to advanced levels and finally became a practitioner in somatic trauma release helping people to overcome Anxiety and Chronic Fatigue Syndromes such as ME and Fibromyalgia.
After being introduced to the healing power of such 'alternative' approaches (which I initially was very sceptical of), I began my writer's journey in 2016. My first book The Scar that won't Heal (effect of common occurrences of 'everyday trauma' and stress on the body) was a labour of love that took 18 months to write (around the same time as preparing the evidence for my PhD*) and I have now published seven books:
1. The Scar that Won't Heal (stress, trauma and emotion in the body)
2. The World Within (the microbiome)
3. Losing our Minds (healthy aging)
4. Life Illuminated (light and energy in the body)
(All in these are in the MindBody series - science for the lay person interested in the mind and body connection).
5. The Dementia Diaries (a memoir of my mum) and its follow up
6. Life Lessons - (messages from my family from beyond death)
7. The Mystery of Number (the mathematics of the natural world)
And in press The Highly Sensitive Handbook (released July 2023) - how to manage life as a highly sensitive person
I now devote my time to my busy practice (Alchemy therapies), writing and speaking. See my website https://alchemytherapies.co.uk for my work and www.patriciaworby.com for details of the full range of my interests.
*in clinical hypnotherapy to investigate the links between past life events and emotional repression in creating chronic pain and fatigue
** I worked for the UK National Health Service (NHS) and then the University of Southampton in medical education, clinical research and administration for 25 years, but I felt that something was missing in my work life and, finally, I left 10 years ago to pursue my passion which is teaching and applying a combination of science and natural medicine.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2019As a fully recovered ex sufferer of severe Chronic Fatigue and a practising psychotherapist specialising in trauma. I find Dr Worby's book to be an invaluable resource. She offers an excellent comprehensive explanation of the emotional, psychological and physiological impact of trauma.
In part one Dr Worby selflessly, weaves her own experiences throughout the narrative. The following chapters introduce some quite complex scientific concepts which are made accessible through the use of explanatory footnotes which she links to the development of chronic illness. From there she discusses symptoms and solutions. It is far from a dry scientific tomb, it is real and relatable.
She also highlights the dilemma we have regarding our current medical model which is bases on an archaic system that polarises physical and mental illness. I share Dr Worby's hope that;
"One day medicine will be unified. We are mind and body, one affects the other in profound ways"
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. it it is available in audio format so is accessible to anyone that is struggling to read (as I was).
- Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2016This book is amazing! For anyone interested in the ways the mind and body impact each other, chronic diseases, CFS, Fibro, trauma, physical illness, mental illness, nutrition (and much more). The author tells the whole story of the human body and mind and brain. She is backed by science and explains things in ways that anyone can understand.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2021Pat Worby writes what she knows to be true. As a therapist and scientist she has seen, hands on and real time the effects of trauma. She has used many of the therapies detailed with life changing results for herself as well as her patients. I have gleaned much, and am much better attuned to my body and how certain illnesses can be the direct result of emotional trauma. Thank you Dr. Worby for helping me to understand why what happens to us and how we internalize it matters, but most importantly that it’s affects can be reversed or eliminated. This should be a must read for all people.

5.0 out of 5 stars Little 't' traumas can be more dangerous than big 'T'.
I was diagnosed with complex post traumatic stress disorder a good 10 years before I found this book. Having been "treated" within the NHS during that time, my CPTSD just got worse. I was told to move on, get over it, and a host of other totally useless "therapies" such a CBT for PTSD resulted in battling suicidality for many years.
This book gave me permission to feel what I was feeling, unlike the conventional approach of symptom reduction - and I was finally able to make the progress towards moving on from my traumas, both big and small.
I had read Carolyn Springs works on trauma, which left me feeling worse as they denied my experience of trauma was even a thing because it wasn't all sexual abuse.
I went on to work with Dr Worby as my therapist as a consequence of this book, and am happy to report that within 6 months, with her unparalleled kindness, wisdom and expertise, I moved from a constant state of pure terror and suicidality, to enjoying a large party held for my brother, I was secure enough to allow my children to see me again, and now a few years later, I am back working and my recovery from chronic fatigue and Fybromyalgia is also close to complete!
Thank you Dr Worby, Patricia, for giving me permission to metabolise the stuck traumas in me, both the small t traumas of being a bit bullied as a kid and the big T traumas of sexual abuse, and finally move on to rebuild my life.
Forever in your debt. X

4.0 out of 5 stars Really valuable information & tools
This is a valuable, well thought out book. I am due to meet Patricia Worby soon. I look forward to the positives that will come from her wealth of knowledge and advanced skills.
My only complaint is the size and print style of the diagrams & graphs- the grey scale and format made it near impossible to read. That said, I really do recommend this book, It does highlight what trauma is, NOT the considered BIG struggles, motor vehicle accidents, family death, abuse, BUT In fact trauma is any experience where you feel vulnerable & afraid and you have no "Power" to change that situation. This can start from a difficult birth.... Read the book, it explains it better.

5.0 out of 5 stars ..
I struggle to understand why I am stuck. Stuck with an ache in my heart. Diagnosed with fibromyalgia as well as many auto immune diseases. I couldn't understand why I felt abandoned. The scar that wont heal was recommend to me.
I loved biology at school and throughly enjoying the science in the book.
The light bulb moment for me was when I realised that the trauma I experienced as an extremely ill baby with asthma was still keeping me in freeze mode and feeling abandoned. All due to the limbic system of the brain.
Thats why the counselling helped a bit however has never resolved these feelings for me, I knew it was something else. The scar that won't heal has helped me identified what is keeping me back from resolving these feelings.
Thank you Patricia I am now seeking help with trauma release as I think this is whats keeping me stuck.

5.0 out of 5 stars A positive step in looking within, at your emotional wellbeing, a facet of who you are. If you dare, curiosity will be rewarded.
A very interesting book which may well get you questioning things you have been told previously. This book has plenty of scientific references which the general public have a good chance of understanding (and this from someone who wasn't offered much science at school).
An innovative approach to emotional wellbeing and Dr Patricia Worby PhD does't just write about it, she practises it and is a therapist to help others too.
A great stepping stone for anyone who has been medically challenged and yet conventional medicine has not provided sufficient answers, leading to a continued quest. Go for it.
