Separating truth from lies is impossible in the game of spies… especially the lies you tell yourself.
A prison break.
Adrenaline junkie and explosives specialist Kinsley “Switch” Morales had a chip on her shoulder long beforebeing caught in what she suspects is some sort of intergalactic human-trafficking ring. Aliens not only exist, their reptilian bodies are stronger, their honed reflexes faster, and their shiny scales nearly impenetrable. But nothing will curb Kinsley’s resolve to commandeer their spaceship and return home to Earth—even if that means crawling behind enemy lines and cozying up to their uncompromising captain.
An undercover mission.
When Raveno Hoviir catches Kinsley outside her cell, wreaking havoc in his control room, he sees more than just her strength, resolve, and courage. He sees a golden opportunity to finally root out the traitor under his command and prove his brother’s loyalty before the coming revolution. After so many years undercover, Raveno is finally one mission away from saving his planet from its tyrannical ruler. He’s sacrificed everything to protect his people—his love life, his anonymity, his left leg—but in his efforts to right his father’s wrongs, has he inadvertently become the very monster he plans to overthrow?
An unlikely alliance.
As Kinsley and Raveno each attempt to exploit the other, they find more than just leverage for their separate missions. Inexplicably, they find common ground in their mutual devotion to family and service. Kinsley knows all too well the grief and guilt of making the wrong decision in the field, but will Raveno keep his word to send her home if she flips loyalties? Is Raveno’s softening heart compromising his judgment, or is Kinsley’s intelligence accurate? Separating truth from lies is impossible in the game of spies. Seeing beyond their surface differences and trusting in love again may be the only way to save both their people—and each other.

About the author

Melody Johnson is the award-winning author of the “out of this world” Love Beyond series and the gritty, paranormal romance Night Blood series published by Kensington Publishing/ Lyrical Press. The New York Times and USA TODAY Bestselling Author, Lynsay Sands, "laughed out loud" reading Beyond the Next Star (Love Beyond, book 1), and Kirkus Reviews praised is as, "an engaging and unusual otherworldly tale." Ruby Dixon, author of the viral sci-fi romance novels: Ice Planet Barbarians series, "stayed up far too late reading this."
Melody graduated magna cum laude from Lycoming College with her B.A. in creative writing and psychology. Throughout college, she wrote contemporary love stories, but having read and adored the action and dark mystery of vampires her whole life, decided to add her fingerprint to paranormal romance.
Melody's unique perspective on vampires lends fresh bite to a classic genre. In addition to a reimagined transformation—the requirement of night blood—vampires have gargoyle-looking, vicious day forms, an orgasmic bite, and as the series progresses to Sweet Last Drop (book 2), a mindless, rampaging, zombie-like breed is introduced. Melody is constantly upping the stakes, and Day Reaper (book 4) is no exception.
Earning the 2021 Maggie Award of Excellence, Beyond the Next Star is an exciting branch from Melody's paranormal romance roots, keeping the dark grit from her Night Blood Series and taking it to new worlds. Told from the dual perspectives of both human pet and alien owner, Melody's story weaves a slow-burn romance that explores the bonds of love in all its forms, navigating the main characters’ relationship in delicate stages from oblivious ownership to woke, romantic love.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2023Omg she did it again. Sight beyond the sun is another knockout by Melody Johnson. I wasn't sure which way the story would go and each time new data was revealed it still wasn't enough to solve the puzzle. This is the same universe as Beyond the Next Star with casual references to the beings of that book. I am hoping for many more in this series. An alien romance for those who don't know what to expect and want to test the waters, this series is the way to go.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2023It was a little bit too long, some parts definitely could’ve been shortened for a better reading experience, but all in all I loved it. I am disappointed though that the ending is quite open and not every loose end is tied up. I’d love to see Reece and Kinsley reunite and talk everything out.
That said, I really enjoyed this book because the world and characters were very developed.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2023This is the second sci-fi book I’ve read by Melody Johnson and she does not disappoint. This book had lots of action, comedy, drama and romance. Can’t wait for the next in this series, which I am assuming is about Reece.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2024This is the 2nd book in the series and while I enjoyed the story a bit better than the first, this one was very elongated. Cute slow burn story, but very disappointing culmination of their romance.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2023It couldn't keep my attention. I kept skipping parts. It's a slow burn scifi adventure with a HEA. It had good parts but I couldn't take the suspension.

Can’t wait for the next in the series!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2023I was so disappointed that this book ended! I feel like it was a HFN vs. HEA. This book needs a sequel! And then it needs a spin off for Reece.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2024This took me longer than it should have to read 🤣. It was a great love story. But the pacing didn't hold my attention for long, and I bounced around a bit.
I'm not sure how this one fits into the series. But I'm guessing as more books are added, it will become clear. bc as it stands, this can be read as a standalone 🤷♀️. Nothing from book 1 is in this book.
The spice isn't heavy. I think you get like 6 kisses and 1 smexy scene that's pretty short.
I look forward to reading the next book when it releases.

5.0 out of 5 stars what a book!
This was a fantastic book. Great characters with depth, great secondary characters too. I enjoyed the world building (even though most of it was in space to begin with) and Melody kept you guessing right up until the end. My only criticism is that I didn’t want it to end. What happens to them?

5.0 out of 5 stars Really fantastic!
Wonderful, wonderful characters, with believable, hilarious dialogue!
Melody Johnson has created a believable, beautiful and terrifying alien world.
Throughly enjoyed this - so yourself a favour and read it!

2.0 out of 5 stars 🤔
I really enjoyed the first book by this author 'Beyond the Star'
But the 2nd book not so much. The female character Kinsley was too much, she's more like a action woman. She didn't suit with the male character Raveno. It felt like they didn't have that romantic connection between them, it was one sided from Raveno.
Halfway through the book I lost interest in it and story kind of dragged on and made no sense most of the time.
I love some action and romance in a story but, this book didn't have that romantic vibe I was expecting like the first book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Read the first and skip this one
It is such a shame that book one was so excellent and this one was... not really. This was primarily not a love story which is fine but I think it was meant to be. The hero and heroine didn't fit together nor make much sense, she was too badass to need him and didn't even seem to like him that much, and he really liked her but had a weird ex wife back story that didn't make sense. Either cresha was the villain or she wasn't, the book tried to make the ex wife both good and bad, and it just didn't make sense. Perhaps the romance should have been left out entirely and the dystopian overthrowing of a dictator should have been focused on instead and fleshed out more. I feel like we should have met josairo. Raveno had a drastic character change for no apparent reason at about a third in. Tironan never explained to his brother he was faking. For such a long book this was lacking, I won't be rereading. My suggestion: read the first one and ignore this one. It was a good concept not quite executed properly.
