Love & Other Disasters (Nashville Love Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 963 ratings

The first openly nonbinary contestant on America’s favorite cooking show falls for their clumsy competitor in this delicious romantic comedy debut that USA Today hailed as “an essential read.”

Recently divorced and on the verge of bankruptcy, Dahlia Woodson is ready to reinvent herself on the popular reality competition show Chef’s Special. Too bad the first memorable move she makes is falling flat on her face, sending fish tacos flying—not quite the fresh start she was hoping for. Still, she's focused on winning, until she meets someone she might want a future with more than she needs the prize money.

After announcing their pronouns on national television, London Parker has enough on their mind without worrying about the klutzy competitor stationed in front of them. They’re there to prove the trolls—including a fellow contestant and their dad—wrong, and falling in love was never part of the plan.

As London and Dahlia get closer, reality starts to fall away. Goodbye, guilt about divorce, anxiety about uncertain futures, and stress from transphobia. Hello, hilarious shenanigans on set, wedding crashing, and spontaneous dips into the Pacific. But as the finale draws near, Dahlia and London’s steamy relationship starts to feel the heat both in and outside the kitchen—and they must figure out if they have the right ingredients for a happily ever after.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Sweet and sexy and wholly delicious. I'm head over heels for these two delightful disasters—three if you count Dahlia's magnificent hair as a separate character. Anita Kelly writes with tremendous warmth and care, and these pages shine with joy."
Rachel Lynn Solomon, author of The Ex Talk

"Kelly writes wildly charming, exquisitely vibrant, and achingly tender prose and has a unique gift for making readers feel safe, loved, and understood within her pages. This story is both fantastically fun and crack your heart wide open vulnerable. I can’t wait to buy it for everyone I’ve ever met."
Rosie Danan, author of The Roommate

"Sweet, spicy, with characters you won’t forget! I loved Dahlia and London’s growing chemistry and witty banter in this amazing foodie romance that had me wanting to eat all the food! But the perfect ingredient in this delicious story was watching how they each carved out space in their lives for each other."
Farah Heron, author of Accidentally Engaged

"A delightful celebration of love, food, and the power to changes our lives. Anita Kelly does a lovely job creating characters both unique and relatable and tells a story that leaves the reader glowing with hope."
Karelia Stetz-Waters, author of Satisfaction Guaranteed

"With only one book, Anita Kelly has landed among my all-time favorite authors."
Meryl Wilsner, author of Something to Talk About

"This book is sweet, steamy, and absolutely delectable! With relatable main characters, vivid (and delicious) descriptions, and beautiful queer representation, this is a book you both want to savor and consume in a single bite."
Alison Cochrun, author of The Charm Offensive

Anita Kelly has the perfect recipe for romance in her debut, Love and Other Disasters. Kelly masterfully balances the vulnerability and the scorching intimacy of new love for a supremely sexy, tender, and decadent romance. I didn't want it to end and I'm so hungry for more."
Ruby Barrett, author of Hot Copy

"Kelly will whet your appetite from the first page, capping off the wonderful feast with the absolute sweetest of happy-ever-afters."
Kirkus, starred review

"A sweet debut… a nonbinary protagonist in a mainstream romance is cause for excitement and the characters spark with chemistry. The heartwarming result will leave readers eager for more from Kelly."

Loved it!
First of all, MORE QUEER ROMANCES WITH NON-BINARY MAIN CHARACTERS! The rep in this book (queer, trans, lesbian, pansexual, non-binary) was fantastic and made my heart so happy. This was such a sweet, enjoyable read and listen. The cooking show setting was a fun, unique setting for the plot and I found myself so invested in the challenges, recipes, and other contestants. Dahlia and London were also both really likable characters and I loved watching them grow together. They inspired the best in one another and it was a joy to read. Minus a toe sucking moment (heads up anyone triggered by feet 😂) I especially loved the intimate scenes. They were realistic and beautiful. The care London took with Dahlia was really sweet. I also really enjoyed the ending. So much so that I wish there was more! I'd love to read more about their lives together. Thank you to Anita for bringing us Dahlia and London. I'll absolutely read more from this author. ❤️

I am flying high after finishing this book. I don't remember exactly what put it on my radar, but when my library hold came up I reread the blurb. A hot queer woman and a hot nonbinary person get together on a cooking show?!?! Sign me the F up!

I was not prepared for how validating this book would be to read. I am a queer woman. My partner is a nonbinary person. It was my favorite thing this year to read a book about that particular type of relationship. It helped a lot that the book was smoking hot and really good on top of all of that. But I super appreciate the representation!!!

Dahlia, this queer woman, is a WRECK. Like this baby is having a time. But she quits her job and jets off to LA to be on this cooking show. There she meets London. This audio engineer from Nashville who wants to start a LGBTQ+ nonprofit. There are so many antics.

I was hungry the entire time I read this book. Every single food item discussed sounded incredible and I wanted to try it immediately. There is also food sex, which was hot in the book and absolutely sounds terrible if you would try to translate that to real life. Luckily they were in a hotel. Can you imagine trying to clean that up in your own bedroom?!?! Not for me.

There are some heavy themes in this book. They talk about divorce and transphobia. They touch on dealing with strained parental relationships. They also talk about what happens when you realize that you don't want children, and I would definitely call it a content warning for anyone who is dealing or has dealt with any infertility struggles. Or even if you dealt with blowback regarding your own choice of whether or not to have children.

Even with some of the heavy themes, this book is hilarious. A fun, quick read. It gave me all of the comfort that I get from watching cooking shows. So if that's your jam, you'll like this too.

ETA: This was just as good upon the relisten. London really is swoony as all heck. Dahlia is just as much of a wreck, but also just as hot. Considering the themes dealt with, it's a shockingly cozy read. And I look forward to the rest of the series! I didn't know we were going to get more of these lovelies!

I dare anyone to come away from this without a crush on Dahlia or London (or both).

Dahlia (she/her) and London (they/them) are fantastic characters. It was amazing to watch each of them grow and come into their own in ways unique to them. And it was so sweet to see them fall for each other. Another reviewer described this as "gently-paced" and that's a perfect description. It moves at exactly the right pace for the story.

The story is also really well balanced. Sometimes with plots like this, one aspect will feature more heavily than the other (often to the story's detriment). That's not at all the case here, though! The cooking competition part of it balances out London and Dahlia's time outside of it. And the other contestants were very realistic. We've all seen or met the Jeffreys and Lizzies out there -- and they're terrible.

I don't want to give away spoilers but some aspects of London's family life hit very close to home. It was heartbreaking to see and definitely had me in my feels for a bit. But that couldn't eclipse the joy of seeing someone like me in fiction, in a lead role.

Please go read this! It deserves all the love!

This book hit my eyeballs just when I needed it most. I did not think a cooking competition romance would be appealing to me considering how little I enjoy the American versions of them – so many bossy men and dumb posturing – but Anita Kelly did me right.

The instant conflict, two amateur cooks in competition, lends the right amount of tension from the start. This is not life or death, so it won’t stress me out, but it’s important enough to amplify the two main character’s motivations. In other words, I’m already hooked.

But then, Kelly hits me with my FAVORITE trope. Grumpy/ sunshine. I love that trope so hard and voila, she presents us with London, grumpy, but not over the top or mean, who is blindsided by the most delicious sunshine in the form of their love interest, Dahlia. Kelly leans so hard into the trope I sighed a contented sigh as Dahlia exploded all over London until they melted like ice cream in the sun. So satisfying.

Both London and Dahlia have realistic motivations for winning the contest and when one of them inevitably leaves the show, the fallout is believable and surprisingly emotional, making their resolution very gratifying.

Kelly’s writing is smart and clean and her characterization is well-crafted without being obvious. The romance between the two is beautifully paced and there is a nice bite of spice in the sex scenes – this book is an all-around treat.

This was a gorgeous, hopeful, and incredibly heartwarming book, that left me more than a little in love with both Dahlia and London. I finished the book as I started: happy and smiling, but even more in love with the resilience and spirit that both characters shared.

Anita Kelly is absolutely an autobuy author for me and I cannot wait to see what they do next!

I enjoyed this book but also thought something was either missing or just off. Not sure what it was but it fell slightly short of what I expected.
The characters are nicely written, once you get past the first couple of chapters and get to know them. And the whole reality show thing was fun. Quite a few laughs as well as a few moments of sadness. It all comes together in the end though into a nice HEA.
