Love, Julie: A Poignant and Humorous Romance (Saskatchewan Romance Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 35 ratings

A Poignant and Humorous Journey of Self-discovery, Resilience, and Redemption

Once, Julie dreamed of a life filled with love and laughter. Now, in her mid-forties, she faces a starkly different reality. She's single, lonely, and reeling from breaking her hard-earned sobriety in front of her family and friends.

Opting for self-recovery over romance, Julie dives into planning her best friend Kate’s wedding. However, sharing this task with the irritatingly cheerful best man, single dad Luke, proves to be an unexpected challenge.

As Luke’s persistent kindness chips away at her icy exterior, a friendship forms, stirring a longing she’d sworn to suppress. But with self-forgiveness as her biggest hurdle, and her past ready to sabotage her future, can Julie confront the shame and trauma that have darkened so much of her life and find the courage to love again? Or will her demons shatter both her and Luke’s hearts in the process?

Jamie Anderson, author of the hilarious and heartwarming Someone to Kiss, is back with another witty, acerbic, and relatable story. Love, Julie is a richly emotional tale of recovery, forgiveness, and romance that readers have praised for “nailing the humor and snarky nature of our generation.”

Love, Julie is the second book in the Saskatchewan Romance series. While part of a series, each book can be enjoyed as a standalone story

Review

An utterly charming novel that puts romance and modern life hand in hand in an authentic and highly enjoyable plot. As Julie navigates her inner demons and confronts her shame, readers are taken on a journey of healing, hope, and the power of love to overcome even the darkest of times. Love, Julie is a heartwarming story that is sure to resonate with readers who have been through tough times and hope for better. Romance fans everywhere will find this a brilliant read filled with warmth and charm - K.C. Finn, Readers Favorite 5* Review

Anderson builds a solid amount of empathy for Julie throughout the story...The engaging and playful dynamic between them during their working dates feels balanced. Julie's self-reflection feels authentic, and the relationship buildup that allows her to open up about rougher incidents in her history feels natural
- Publishers Weekly

I loved the many layers to the main character and really felt for her. There were some really thought provoking conversations and situations which made me enjoy the story more... a lovely, thought provoking book
- Emily Pankhurst, Good Housekeeping Book Room

An inspiring novel of self-healing and the power of friendship. People who route for the fun, plaid-wearing single dads - without washboard abs - will love this story
- Sue Slade, The Miramichi Reader

I completely adore this emotional and unique romantic comedy. I love a slow burn romance and this is just perfect, with elements of grumpy/sunshine and forced proximity I knew it was my kind of read. If I could give it 6 stars I would, perfect for those looking for a romantic comedy with a more mature aspect, brilliant!

Julie is back after her slip back into alcohol dependency. She is the character who represents so many people who experience addiction but still function. The story explores the problems & difficulties that addiction causes & does so in a sensitive way. The author achieves this while weaving in a sweet romance that has to deal with the impact of the turmoil caused by alcoholism. It's entertaining & easy to read even with the serious topic of addiction being addressed.

Julie's life hasn't exactly turned out like she thought it would. She has had many obstacles to overcome.

Wow... this is well written, got me invested in realistic characters, and inspired me. It was a romance, yes, but so much more. Beyond the believable addiction story, it inspired me. Julie needed self-acceptance, to let the past go, and to drop the walls around her heart. Luke was there for her. I'll be remembering this one.

I did win this book as part of a book sweepstakes, and I'm glad I did. The opinions are definitely my own!

Before I even knew what this book was about, I was drawn to the cover. This is such an eye-catching cover. After focusing on the cover, I'm so glad I decided to explore the book further and read the contents. The book is real, transparent and can be a very relatable subject. Intertwined with humor, jokes and good times is a serious matter, addiction. The addiction focused on here is alcoholism.
Julie is in her mid-forties and still doesn't have it all together yet. This isn't at all how she envisioned her life when she was in her twenties. The way the author portrays the stops and starts, fails and wins sounds realistic in Julie's journey to sobriety. From self-help classes, to winning it and then falling off. The elations and falling low. My son is a police officer and has told me of some very sad cases where people were not able to get the help they needed with such sad results. Admitting you need the help and taking that first step is so important to your road to recovery. There is no smooth sailing, there will be good days and bad. I really loved Luke's character, he and Julie are working on wedding planning her best friend's wedding together. Luke is Julie's biggest supporter in her recovery journey, so incredibly supportive. When she doesn't believe in herself, he's there to pick her up. She's not looking for romance her recovery journey is her main focus. Luke has a daughter he's raising so he has to be completely sure of who he hooks up with and how she will perceive them. Will his sense of humor, understanding and kindness break down her fences as she continues her healing journey? I loved this impressive and moving story. One to remember.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book.

This is a tale of sobriety and redemption. Julie is in recovery and working hard at staying on the path. She is not looking for a relationship but is thrown into a situation with a really great guy…that she thinks she can’t stand. It’s a slow burn but throughout you get to watch her grow as a human and strive to get her life on track for all the right reasons finally.

An emotional slow-burn, 'Love, Julie' tells the story of Julie, a prickly 40something woman trying to desperately to remain sober after a relapse causes her to embarass herself at her brother and best friend's engagement party. Determined to make it up for them, Julie finds herself organising their wedding along with the best man, the very warm and extroverted Luke, who slowly knocks down Julie's walls to hear heart.

A short novella, at times I found the pace of this book just a bit too slow, chapters are interpersed with unanswered emails to Luke in the present day. Luke is a sweetheart but at times I found him just a little bit too perfect, and I am also not a huge fan of children in books so I found those scenes with his daughter a bit too sickly, so I found myself skipping some of those chapters a bit more to move towards the present day. But overall this is a deeply moving character drama that had me invested in Julie's story, and how she has to find herself as a sober person, making new friends, opening her heart to love. Watching Julie realising she deserves all the good things in life despite her childhood trauma that has her believe otherwise was the highlight for me.

Thanks to Booksgosocial and NetGalley for the ARC.

Unexpectedly funny and everyone is likable!
I recently read another novel with this similar trope and did not like it very much at all. I couldn't relate to the characters at all and was annoyed. It isn't worth mentioning that book, my opinion was not the average.
This one is very good. The topic of alcoholism is handled authentically and sensitively enough to make a point but not be a downer for the book. It is a sweet, charming, Rom-Com underneath the heavy topic.
I recommend this to anyone who enjoys romance with a meaty story behind it.
    Thank you Hidden Gems Books.

I read this book in a day. I love a writer who captures my attention from the first page and keeps me reading until the end. I admire Julie's courage; she learned from her mistakes, owned them, and allowed herself to trust new people in her life. I cried alot reading this book, sad and happy tears. (You'll just have to read it for yourself to find out why) and laughing as well.

I'm not giving anything away. This is a must read kind of story that will touch everyone in a different way, and realizations how not unlike Julie we all are in one way or another.

    I love it !!

I enjoyed following the journey of 40-something Julie, who struggles with sobriety, loneliness, and regret, and who can’t recognize her own self-worth. This book is well-written, relatable, and full of wit and humor. I loved the supporting characters, especially quirky Quinn and kind-hearted Luke. There are many important themes that are explored but for me what stuck out are the incredibly supportive friendships, and the fact that everyone deserves to be loved for who they are as a person and not what they look like. Highly recommend.

I cannot say enough good things about this book!! I loved it!! Even though I have not had the same experiences as Julie felt what she was feeling. I cried reading this book, but I am kinda of a sap :). I found it hard to put this book down. This is probably the fastest I’ve ever read a book. I had to know how it ended. I highly recommend this book.
