Butterflies: the many lives of Lucia Porter Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 15 ratings

A Haunting Tale of Love, Loss, and the Mystical Unknown.

Lucia Porter and Harry Cavanagh seem the unlikeliest of couples. She’s a sheltered innocent from a modest background, he’s the worldly heir to a fortune and a title. Their whirlwind romance at university leads to a fairy-tale marriage—or so Lucia expects.

But beneath Harry’s charm lies a man far different from the one she thought she knew.

When tragedy strikes with the sudden death of their newborn son, Lucia’s world shatters. On the verge of a breakdown, she runs away to a remote retreat on a windswept Scottish island—a place steeped in ancient, otherworldly mystique.

At the retreat, Lucia meets four women who have also faced profound loss. Under the enigmatic guidance of Dr Crowley, a figure as compelling as he is mysterious, Lucia embarks on a journey unlike any other. As she delves deeper into the island’s mystical power, reality begins to shift, and she is drawn into realms she never imagined—where forces beyond comprehension take hold of her life.

Butterflies is a masterful blend of suspense, metaphysical intrigue, and emotional depth. Described by The Wishing Shelf as “truly excellent,” this gripping drama carries an unforgettable ghostly and paranormal edge. Perfect for fans of David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas and Andrew Michael Hurley’s Starve Acre, it explores the uncharted territories of the human soul.

What readers are saying:
“Terrific characters, sharp dialogue, a tight plot, and a n amazing ending.”
“Brilliantly planned and compelling.”
“One of the most fascinating heroines I’ve met in a long time—simultaneously infuriating and enchanting.”
“An innocent girl lost in a world she’s unprepared for. ”

Step into the haunting world of Butterflies—where love, loss, and destiny intertwine, and nothing is as it seems.

REVIEW
So, let's cut to the chase - is this novel any good or not? Well, yes, it is - good that is. The story was remarkably well-written, the characters (particularly Lucia) were interesting, and there's a lot (A LOT) of mystery and suspense It's the story of Lucia, a woman who lost her baby and is, not surprisingly, having problems coping - not helped by the fact her husband's nasty and very controlling. So she attempts to get help by travelling to a 'retreat' on a small island called Namba in the Shetlands. There she meets other women facing similar problems. There is 'therapy' on offer but trust me when I tell you, it's not the sort they offer on the NHS. Cultish rituals pop to mind!
This novel truly is excellent. I loved the characters - Lucia, her sister, Lily (who's a cop and is very important to the story) and Dr Crowley who's a bit, well, odd - to put it mildly. I also liked the island setting. You can't just run away living on a tiny island, so it adds a claustrophobic feel to the proceedings. Finally, I liked the pacing; the story galloping along with plenty happening (and plenty of mystery) to keep readers turning the page.
I'd happily recommend this novel to anybody who enjoys a well-paced, suspense-filled novel with a strong cast of characters. Also, anybody with an interest in the afterlife I think will find it an absorbing read. All in all, a wonderful way to pass the time and, having enjoyed a number of Phill Featherstone's novels, I'm happy to report this is one of his best.

About the Author

Phill Featherstone is an English author who lives in Sheffield. He began writing novels about ten years ago, and has published one a year since. There are two series - REBOOT, 3 books which tell the story of a global pandemic (incidentally written before COVID!), and Leopard's Bane, a fantasy family saga trilogy about a hero's attempts to change the corrupt society in which he grew up. Phill's 4 other novels, 'The God Jar', 'I Know What You're Thinking', 'What Dreams We Had', and 'Butterflies' are adult contemporary fiction. He has also written a book of short stories, which is available free but only to those who sign up on his email list.
When not writing, Phill enjoys walking, travel, music, movies, art galleries and museums, and the theatre. He reads a lot, enjoys gardening and DIY, and plays the saxaphone (badly!).

Phill alternates between writing, drinking coffee, and playing the saxaphone (badly) - not always in that order. He lives in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England with Sally, his wife and partner of more years than they can count.

Phill is the award winning author of a number of novels and short stories.

'Paradise Girl', Book 1 of Phill's REBOOT trilogy, is set in the northern hills where, amidst the majestic beauty of the rolling moors, a world pandemic consigns a lone young woman to a bleak future. In Book 2, 'Aftershocks', her twin brother sets out to discover the truth behind the infection. REBOOT concludes with 'Jericho Rose'. By now the pandemic is over and it's time to rebuild. However, there are a selfish few who seek to exploit the situation for their own ends and this risks losing the little that's left.

Phill's fourth novel, 'The God Jar', is a tale of magic and mystery which straddles 16th century Europe and 20th century England. John Dee, Elizabethan sorcerer and mystic, finds a jar which he discovers has supernatural powers. 400 years later it resurfaces when a pair of honeymooners come across it on a diving trip. But have they found the jar or has it found them?

In 'What Dreams We Had!' a group of young people are offered a fantastic holiday in Italy, but once there they are forced to confront uncomfortable truths about who they are and what's important to them, and to wonder whether anything they thought was real actually is.

In 'I Know What You're Thinking' a pair of teenagers share the ability to see into each other's mind. When one of them is kidnapped the other must use this gift to find them, but nothing is easy in this taut thriller.

The Leopard's Bane series consists of 3 titles which tell the story of a family feud and a struggle between two brothers, one bent on selfish advancement and the other seeking to correct a corrupt society.

'Butterflies' is the tale of a girl from a sheltered background and her trials in attempting to come to terms with the world.

Phill has also written a book of short stories, 'Undiscovered Countries' which is free to subscribers to his his email newsletter. Details are on his website.

Phill is a member of The Society of Authors, The Alliance of Independent Authors, Promoting Yorkshire Authors, Sheffield Authors, and The British Library.

A suspenseful tale of one woman raised in the confines of a Catholic school, where her life was strictly controlled by the nuns. When she marries, she finds that she has traded one life of confinement for another. But, as she continues to question the value and purpose of her life, tragedy strikes with the death of her baby son.
Seeking to ease her pain she unknowingly becomes involved with practitioners of the paranormal convincing her that they can ease her pain. Believing that they were legitimate counselors, she agrees to visit their retreat.
In portraying the evolution of this woman from a dutiful follower to emancipation, the author had me wishing I could help her regain her strength and follow her own dreams. The ending, therefore was a complete surprise. Don’t cheat and read that first.

This was such a unique blend of paranormal suspense and fiction! The story follows Lucia Porter, who transitions from a strictly sheltered and harshly controlled upbringing to a whirlwind romance with an extremely wealthy man who sweeps her off her feet. She even drops out of college to be with him. Unfortunately, once they’re married, Harry’s charming facade fades, and he becomes just as controlling as the environment she escaped. Their lives take a tragic turn when they lose their baby boy.

In her grief, Lucia begins seeing a therapist who uses unconventional methods to help mothers coping with loss. She attends a retreat where nothing is as it seems, setting the stage for an emotional and suspenseful journey. The story carries undertones of deep sadness yet is laced with moments of humor. I absolutely adored Lucia and her older sister—their bond added so much depth to the story.

While the ending brought comfort and closure for Lucia, it left me with mixed feelings, knowing what was sacrificed for her happy ending. Without giving too much away, this book is an emotional rollercoaster that grabs your heart from the very first page. You can’t help but root for Lucia and hope for the best in her life. Bonus points for the absolutely stunning cover, which is as captivating as the story itself!

    Review :

I loved this book. I loved reading about Lucia. My heart felt for her. She has been through some very hard times. There were twists that I did not see coming. I love each part of this story. It was captivating until the very end. This was a very well written book. The cover was powerful. I love that Lucia and her sister had the bond that they did. I can’t imagine going through everything that Lucia did. She married into wealth and then dealt with an unimaginable tragedy. Harry irritated me in the beginning of the story. The ending was not what was expected. It’s a story that will stick with you.

The cover of this book drew me in. This follows the story of Lucia, and her ultimate “love” story. She comes from a religious fanatic family and grows up in convent school. Lucia must grow into her own and faces many challenges throughout her life. This is a book of suspense with a paranormal undertone. This book has so many twists and turns that kept me intrigued till the very end. I needed to know what was going to happen next. Highly recommend!

This book was not what I was expecting at all !! This book was written so good. I loved the mix of how we had romance, paranormal mystery we started out learning about the disappearance of Lucia's and then we jump into the past to learn more about her life. This book had so much depth to it. I felt for Lucia I mean she just went through so much my heart broke into a million pieces. I wasn't expecting the ending at all holy cow but I mean I get it fit with this book !! I really loved this read and I can't wait for more books by this author

This is the story of Lucia. We follow her from a young girl to a married woman. Lucia does not have an easy life starting with her parents sending her away to school and her mother not telling her that her father died. She marries into a very rich family but is still very naive. As I read this book I found it hard to put it in a genre. It has a little supernatural, domestic plot lines, and a contemporary fiction feel. The cover absolutely drew me in. It has special meaning in the book and the book is broken into sections of Lucia’s life. An enjoyable read.

A paranormal suspense thriller that took me by surprise. It was a twist and turn of emotions and events that had me guessing. Very emotional with all the things Lucia goes through, and in some ways, she’s relatable. The character development and pacing worked very nicely and I enjoyed it. This is my first time reading anything by this author and I was not disappointed in the least.

I found Butterflies a wonderful read and beautifully written. It deals with romance, deep grief and the paranormal. It captivated me from the beginning. The ending was unexpected, yet perfect for this drama. I have read many of Phill’s books, all I have enjoyed. Butterflies, for me, was his best. I do hope there will be more.
