Lurking: An Inky Bones Press Dark Decades Anthology (Inky Bones Press Dark Decades Anthology Collection Book 6) Kindle Edition
It seems harmless to bark basic household commands to an electronic assistant on the kitchen counter or to plot out your daily schedule on a digital calendar. Chatting online with strangers seems like a good idea, when you’re safe behind a locked door. But what if it isn’t?
How many times have you or someone you know jokingly uttered the ominous phrase: I think my phone is spying on me.
What if your devices become self-aware and develop ulterior motives?
What if these life-altering innovations decide to rebel?
Who controls the technology and social media you trust?
Let us in, and we will show you what dangers are lurking.

About the authors
Brian J. Smith is the author of ten horror novels such as Dead River and Consuming Darkness and his most recent second short story collection “Strange Discovery And Other Strange Discoveries” was published in July 2024; his splatter western “Blood On The Sand” is due out in 2025. He resides in southeastern Ohio has too many books and buys more, thinks that Valentine’s Day should be replaced by Second Halloween and doesn’t drink enough coffee. He is an affiliate member of The Horror Authors Guild and can be found on Facebook under Brian J. Smith and on Instagram under horrorauthor9.
Pacific Northwest author Tamara Kaye Sellman favors the liminal, subterranean, gothic, and often eldritch landscapes of her beloved region in her stories.
Sellman is co-author of RAIN SHADOWS with podcast co-host Clay Vermulm (Beneath the Rain Shadow). Her podcast ventures will expand to include a second season of Beneath the Rain Shadow as well as introduce a new poetry film podcast, Cinematopoeia, in 2026.
Earlier in 2025 she was a featured guest author for the second edition of the CAMP CRYPTICON anthology. Her work has been widely anthologized elsewhere, most recently in TRUE STORIES (2023) and in fall 2024, when the Dark Decades Anthology Series showcased her tech horror story in its title, LURKING.
She’s author of CUL DE SAC STORIES (Aqueduct Press, 2024), quirky speculative stories that question safety and reality in the American exurban landscape, especially for marginalized communities.
Her medical memoir told in verse and flash prose, INTENTION TREMOR (MoonPath Press, 2021) chronicles her life after an MS diagnosis in 2013 and serves the interests of anyone managing the day-to-day challenges of chronic illness.
An indie filmmaker, Sellman is currently transforming her poems into indie films for MCR Media to make them more accessible; one experiment, LOOK UP, won bronze laurels at the WRPN Womens International Film Festival and has appeared in five other film festivals since June 2024 (Washington, South Carolina, Copenhagen, Toronto, Oregon). She is at work on several horror-adjacent poetry films, the seeds of a documentary, and filmmaking certification.
Robin Knabel’s short fiction has appeared in Collective Chaos, Lurking, The Web, Captured, Are You Watching?, Who's Listening?, There's No Escape, Exposed Bone Lit Mag Vol I, Darkness 101: Lessons Were Learned, The Raven Review, Hope Screams Eternal, Autumn Noir, Summer Bludgeon, and Still of Winter. Her work has placed in the Writer’s Digest Your Story Contest, and you can find her upcoming work in Darkness 102: Advanced Lessons Were Learned. She’s currently working on a collection of horror short stories.
Robin is an editor and owner of Inky Bones Press. Prior to that, she was co-founder and editor at Unsettling Reads. Robin enjoys sharing book reviews, as well as photography, on her personal website. She has experience producing podcasts for multiple shows, including Unsettling Reads.
Robin writes primarily in the horror genre and enjoys reading horror, sci-fi, and fantasy. Her favorite stories tend to have creatures, revenge, shocking twists, visceral reactions, and a healthy dose of gore.
When not being bookish, she can be found taking photos, sipping coffee at her favorite coffeehouse, or being weighed down on her couch by a cat (or two).

This is the 6th and final installment in the Dark Decades Anthology series. My favorite story in this book was "Lost in the Liner Notes" by CM Forest.
"Lurking" contains short stories involving AI. Frankly, it's stories like these that justify why we should all be nice to our household appliances.
Thank you to Inky Bones and Robin Knabel. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

5.0 out of 5 stars another fantastic horror
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI want to start these reviews by saying I was absolutely hooked on this series from the start. So much so that before I finished the first one I purchased them all on kindle, one to support the authors, and two because I knew I would be rereading them. These collections are fantastic since you can read them during breaks, on commutes or safe at home. They are also fantastic because of the different types of horror we get. For a horror fan they are a must read but I think even those stepping into the world of dark fiction and horror would enjoy these.
Lurking is the final collection in Dark Decades and I can’t say it’s the best since all are equally amazing but it most certainly is the scariest. Again this isn’t in terms of writing but with the current increase in AI and technology in general this collection really hits home. Again I found no misses or stories I didn’t enjoy but I will say the one that really stood out was Do It Yourself. I am guilty of using an Alexa but call me paranoid. I am always a bit too polite to my AI aide. This collection was probably the one that gave me the most chills because I honestly could easily believe some of the horrors within. A brilliant ending to the series.
It’s safe to say I have loved the Dark Decades collection by Inky Bones Press. I really hope we get more collections or works in the future because these are some top tier short horror and dark fiction stories. A must read for horror fans.
