Widow (Time of Myths: Shapeshifter Sagas Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 69 ratings

The legends are wrong—mythological creatures are real, but they’re not what you've always been told. Get lost in history with these strong female leads and their sexy alpha shifters to discover the truth behind the myths.

Lady Rayne’s life at the convent awaits… if the ominous Black Shuck lets her pass. WIDOW, a novella, begins this series of full-length stories at a time when legend of this ghostly hound haunts the English countryside.

Lady Rayne has few options as a young widow. Either her father will marry her off to a wealthy nobleman—no matter how old and disagreeable he may be, or she will become a nun like her aunt at Grimsford Abbey. The choice is easy: her interest in writing is not supported in the dark halls of her father’s home. Rayne eagerly anticipates becoming a scribe and learning the art of illumination and book making. But first she must travel along the treacherous roads of East Anglia.

Far from the confines of Norwich, Rayne hears fables of an enormous ghostly hound called the Black Shuck. She tries to ignore them until she finds herself staring into its expressive brown eyes. With every heartbeat, her chances of reaching Grimsford Abbey disappear. If only she could live to tell the tale.

The legends are wrong—mythological creatures are real, but they’re not what you've always been told. Get lost in history with these strong female leads and their sexy alpha shifters to discover the truth behind the myths.

    4 & 1/2 stars.
Entertaining Novella. Surprisingly, for a Novella, there was enough world building to not be too confused. I liked the story even if, as other reviewers have mentioned, it was a tad predictable. The flow was steady. There were just a few places that needed more to it, to make the flow better. I liked Rayne, and I liked the hound. I didn't really get enough of a feel with Willelm the bits he was in the story interacting with Rayne to decide if I liked him real well. Because of this, I would have liked to see a little more interaction between Rayne & Willelm -in between the hound interaction with Rayne. I also would have liked an epilogue or something even if it's just the wedding or even just 6 months later.

I received this book for free. This is a good story, but I found the writing a little awkward, at times. It doesn't flow easily from description to dialogue to description.

I enjoyed this novella, but I do wish it was longer, I was just falling in love with the characters and then it was over. (Perhaps she will write a pt2) I loved the details of the illuminated manuscripts and the sense of history that were incorporated into into this story. The main character was intriguing and really well developed, I could easily see her having her joyful life and finding fulfillment in her writing.

Thoroughly enjoying Natasha Brown's series. Love how she is weaving Viking myths into the appropriate time period and people.

What I liked most about this book was how short it was. What I disliked the most was how little interaction the MC's had with one another throughout the entire book. Instead of emotion provoking dialogue, it was slam packed with mundane dribble, which seems to be the theme with Brown's books.

Widow was a surprise to me. I love shifter books and was thrilled that this one was a wolfhound not a wolf. Sorry, I'm a dog person. It was predictable in most ways...most books are if you read as much as I do... but there was enough of a twist to make it interesting. I knew I really liked it when my first thought when finishing the story, after wishing it was longer, was I have to write a review and I have to find out what else she wrote. If her next book is this good I will be following her.

5.0 out of 5 stars This was a really nice little novella and an easy and enjoyable read

This was a really nice little novella and an easy and enjoyable read. The writing was very good and the characters and the 13th century were brought to life very realistically (I especially enjoyed the research notes at the end of the story telling me more about the history). There are only two things that I didn't like so much about this book (but don't let that put you off): the story was a bit predictable but on the other hand I felt like it ended too abruptly and I didn't want it to finish!

Es ist ein eher langatmiger Roman, schade, das man so früh weiss, wie das Ende aussieht. Deshalb nur 3 Sterne.
