Magical New Beginnings: Paranormal Women's Fiction (Midlife Witchery Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 3,505 ratings

When life goes sideways, embracing the adventure is the fastest way to set things right.

One day I was just a widow facing the prospect of an empty nest, living a life that was anything but enchanted. The next, I had discovered my magical roots, and my rightful place as the Guardian of the portal between the Faery and Earth. There was shock. And there was fear. After all, no one plans to start over at forty-five.

I intended to grow old with my husband. I thought we’d live an ordinary life. So I’ll be damned if I’m going to waste this opportunity to live in a world I always thought was imaginary. I’m half-witch, half-faery, and facing dangers as real as the ache in my bad knee. Ibuprofen and caffeine keep me going, and I could do this for the rest of my life.

Whoever thinks my family home is an easy mark better take notice: the new Guardian in town isn’t going down without a fight. After all, she’s already learned to let go of her simple existence and believe in the extraordinary power inside of her. What could possibly stop her now?

When Fiona moves to England after her grandmother dies and leaves her house to her, Fiona discovers she is a witch and the Guardian of the portal between her town and the Fae world.
This book is interesting in that a woman in her midlife must learn a new life. She still has the aches and pains, the feelings of a woman of middle age, but now has to learn to live a very new and different life. The author gives the reader good info on midlife, along with witchy things. The book includes new friends, a budding relationship, and some fun happenings.
A good read which will leave you wanting the next book.

Firstly, the story is great, hence the 5 stars. But this is the warning I wish I had had - the last 60 pages are excerpts from other stories. So in my hand is a paperback that looks like I have at least a quarter more to read and poof! It says download book 2. Yes, the lack of instant gratification is what I trade away when i order a physical book. And i am not unfamiliar with a teaser chapter for the next installment, but I have never encountered 5 teaser chapters, each for a different series. Amazon says this book is 272 pages, the last page number is 262, but this story ends on page 201.
I quite enjoyed the story and book 2 has already been ordered, but be aware if you cozying up to read through the morning, you may only have 4 pages left before you have to get up and find another book.

Ok, the storyline and premise are excellent, but the grammatical and tense errors show this was not edited very well! There are also a few places where jumps in time with nothing to indicate them mean thing become a bit nonsensical. Without these, the number of stars would be higher!
Still, I will be looking for the next book because of my first statement!

    **Cliffhanger Warning**
Ok this one is a pretty big cliffhanger... it ends right in the middle of a scene, so get the next book lined up!

Fiona is a widowed empty nester. When she inherits a cottage in England, she decides to move there, not realizing that with it, comes responsibility for a Fae portal...

This was an enjoyable women’s paranormal fiction book. A mature heroine, multiple interesting support characters, and all kinds of mystical creatures.
The world behind the characters is interesting and the plotline engaging. There are many mysteries yet to solve and some situations which are coming to a head...
It’s a good beginning to the series, and fans of urban fantasy (especially with mature heroines) will enjoy it.

I enjoyed reading this book. The storyline was interesting, and the characters were people who would be fun to know. There was a lot of action, which I enjoyed tremendously. The pace was appropriate given t was first in series and world and character building took some time. The last third of the book the pace was pretty fast as the heroine and her friends and allies were attacked in a fairly frequent basis. Only one issue I had was too frequent grammar errors. After reading about 40% of the book I started highlighting the grammar errors because I was annoyed. They were not that bad, but it was obvious the author needs a better editor or a knowledgeable proof reader.

I received a copy of this book from the author.

Wow what a fantastic start not only to a new series but to a new life for the main character.

After loosing her Grandmother when she was forty-five, then discovering that she is a witch and magic is really real, Fiona’s confusion is completely relatable. I cannot imagine how that would feel.

The setting sounds like an idyllic country retreat in the north of England, however things are not as peaceful as they at first seem.

I would highly recommend this story and am looking forward to reading more of this series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Please don't use the word old, AGAIN!... Otherwise great book!
Reviewed in Canada on August 29, 2021
I enjoyed this book but I am honestly worried about this women's health if she has this many issues in her forties...and using the word old every other page is getting on my nerves. As a forty something women I do not share these experiences but do love the book otherwise. Great characters that you can get into, sexy, and a good paranormal story line too. Just reads like someone who has not experienced their forties explaining incorrectly how bad one feels over forty.
